CL Preview: Lyon – Barça, Tuesday 2:45pmEST ESPNDeportes

By: Isaiah | February 23rd, 2009

Here we go, folks. It’s the Champions League and it’s back with a big honking dose of Olympique Lyonnais. I’m sure Inara or John will have a solid preview of this match posted soon (if not before this preview goes up), but don’t worry, I’m here to set the record straight, Barça style, or at least Isaiah style.

Let’s talk Lyon, since probably few of us follow the French league:

Lyon is currently in 1st (what’s new?) with a 6-point advantage over second place PSG. They beat AS Nancy 0-2 this weekend to take their overall record to 15W-7D-3L, 52pts, 35GF 16GA. The numbers, broken down, are 2.08pts per game, 1.4GF per game, 0.64GA per game. They are consolidating their lead at the top of the league, and seem to be playing very well at the moment. They haven’t lost since a December 6 trip to Nantes when they lost 2-1. Since, they’ve gone 5W-3D-0L, 13GF 4GA.

They’ve had their share of luck, it would seem, since Youssouf Hadji missed a penalty (saved) in the 50th minute that would have tied the game at 1-1. Instead, on came Karim Benzema and sealed the deal in the 90th. Speaking of substitutions, Juninho (58), Benzema (66), and Ederson (80) all came on as second half subs, meaning they’re a bit more rested than our players. Midfielders Toulalan and Kallstrom played all 90 minutes, while Fabio Grosso stayed on the bench the whole time, in case you were keeping track of them.

Soccernet’s preview of the match points out that Lyon have a shortage of right backs, which makes Henry’s job that much more important. If Messi is going to be quintuple teamed on our right, then our left has to take advantage of that and break the defense to pieces. It didn’t do that in the Espanyol match and that was one of the reasons we lost. If we can capitalize on a weaker back line, then we’ll draw them out of any protective shell they decide to go with (if, indeed, they decide to go with the bus-parking thing – to do otherwise would be suicide, plain and simple) and that will allow the shifty, wonderful runs that Messi can make against an open defense.

This being Lyon’s first game against Barça, they may not fully understand the speed and skill in store for them on the right side (Alves and Messi, backed by the slick passing of Xavi). I don’t doubt that the same is true in reverse, that Barça may be a bit over-confident when it comes to a French team. I mean, sheesh, they’re in Ligue 1! But they’re a solid team, with a very solid midfield and a fantastic, big striker up front. As always, though, the key to defeating Lyon is Juninho. Shut him down and you shut down their engine, their creativity. And for chrissake, don’t give the man any freekicks!

How do we do that? Well, our midfield will be instrumental in all of this, providing both cover for the back 4 and defense-opening passes to the forward 3. What I’m speaking of, naturally, is The Yaya. He hasn’t had the best games over the last few weeks, but he’s been solid and his offense has been stepped up just a tad, — especially against Espanyol when he was asked to fill the entire center of midfield from box-to-box (that he scores is actually immaterial to this statement because he scored on what was virtually a set piece: a rebound he volleyed home). He’ll need to Man-Mountain Yaya (is that redundant) in order to take Juninho out of the match and also Laser Pass Yaya so as to open up the defense with some of those absurd over-the-top lobs he can make whenever he wants to. Or Guardiola lets him, anyway.

Our zone marking is going to have to be perfect tomorrow because of the 35 goals Lyon have scored, 16 came from set pieces. Ruh-roh. So keeping fouls and corners to a minimum is the only real way to keep them off the scoreboard for an entire game. We did well off of set pieces in the Espanyol game (did you notice?) and hopefully we can continue in that particular vein. Was it just Puyol and Marquez’s return that made the difference in that? Or merely that Pique and Cáceres weren’t together in the middle getting everything a bit jumbled up? Impossible for me to say, but it was certainly a better defensive effort throughout the game than against Betis. Especially considering that we were down to 10 men for quite a while.

So, now to Barcelona. How do we approach this match, knowing that many of ours tarters are going to be somewhat tired and quite a few of us are a bit apprehensive about the Atleti match given that Abidal and Iniesta are both out injured, meaning our left side is dangerously weak?

Well, here’s the squad list: Valdés, Pinto, Alves, Sylvinho, Puyol, Víctor Sánchez, Cáceres, Piqué, Márquez, Xavi, Busquets, Gudjohnsen, Keita, The Yaya, Hleb, Messi, Eto’o, Bojan, Henry.

Let’s build from the back, shall we? Valdés it is in goal, despite having 2 weeks in a row where he has made serious blunders in his outlet passing. The first was against Betis when he tried to hospitalize Cáceres with a poor ball through the center of the field when he had Pique out wide. And, of course, there’s the 3-point gift he handed de la Peña in the Espanyol match. But, he’s been fairly solid throughout the year, so we can’t replace him with Pinto, who has had his butterfingers moments too.

Okay, so the rest seems, to me, to be an interesting discussion. Oh no injury crisis, we’re screwed, we only have an absurdly amazing group left to choose from rather than an unbelievably absurdly amazing group. So my back line goes like this: Alves, Puyol, Pique, Caceres. I know I’m dropping Márquez, but he did play 90 against Espanyol and Piqué’s aerial powers are going to be important against a big guy like Benzema. On the wings, I like Caceres’ speed for the same reason that I like Abidal’s speed: stopping the counter. You let the Greyhound do his thing on the wing and it effectively shuts down any opposing right wingers. Supermartin can do the same thing, I believe, like he does for Uruguay. This also allows us to put Sylvinho out on the wing for the Atleti match if we so choose, or to rotate Puyol out there (though I don’t think that’s a good idea).

In the midfield I’d like to see The Yaya, Busi, and Xavi. The reasons for this are fairly simple: The Yaya breaks, Busi cleans up, Xavi distributes. Busi can fill the gaps at the front, as well. The only thing that this does is leaves us a bit empty in the DM department for Atleti. I could see putting Keita in for Busi in that case since he isn’t going to be available for Atleti. I actually like Keita quite a bit and think he adds attacking versatility that Busi doesn’t (perhaps only because of the roles Guardiola has them playing). And Xavi is, of course, Xavi. Keita also tends to drift a bit more to the left than Busi, which could be very useful without Iniesta, unless Busi can be convinced to play more on the left. Hleb would, ideally, be able to fill this role, but I’ve lost so much confidence in him that I can’t bring myself to advocate using him even in the role that he was basically designed to play.

Up front is the trio of wonder: Henry, Eto’o, and Messi. No true explanation is really necessary, I don’t think.

So the full lineup looks like this: Valdés, Alves, Puyol, Piqué, Cáceres, The Yaya, Xavi, Busquets, Messi, Eto’o, Henry.

And now for my official prediction: 1-1. A precious away goal from Messi, who will be back with a vengeance in this match, facing an opponent who doesn’t necessarily know how to chop him down quite so well. Not that Lyon is a bunch of innocent tacklers, but you really do have to play with him to understand the power and speed we’re talking about. At least that’s what I believe. A clean sheet would be magic for us, but I just don’t see it happening in their home.

Visca el Barça!

You aren't crazy, John. He ripped it up, doing most of the things that he gets lambasted for here. That's life. Different team, different needs.

  • New thread is up. post there, please.

  • john

Oh, and I meant left. Didn't Hleb often play on the left?

  • john

You guessed it, ballbeav: I always root for Spanish teams in the first round.

Kevin - am I crazy, or did Hleb frequently play on the right for Arsenal, and do fairly well there? (My girlfriend would say yes, definitely crazy; she's says I'm a bit off for the week preceding CL fixtures, muttering things in my sleep like, "Anti-football...Arg!... don't you come any closer, Lampard!... Jens, Jens, Jens you crazy man!")

  • ballbeav

    here is the lineup

    El Barça jugará con
    Valdés,
    Alves, Piqué, Márquez, Puyol,
    Touré, Busquets, Xavi,
    Henry, Eto'o i Messi.

En el banquillo habrá Pinto, Cáceres, Sylvinho, Gudjohnsen, Keita, Bojan y Hleb.

El Olympique de Lyon jugará con Lloris, Cris, Mensah, Boumsong, Grosso, Makoun, Toulalan, Juninho, Keita, Benzema y Ederson.

  • also, Kevin, Henry on the right? Whaaa?

  • but eklavya, goltv isn't showing the match. it's on ESPN Deportes live and ESPN Classic delayed 2.5 hours.

  • eklavya

    YEEEEEEEEE-HAAAAA!!!!!!!
ITS CHAMPIONS LEAGUE TIME!!! (im saying this without energy drink :D )

a link for watching the match:
    http://livetv.ru/en/allupcomin...

just choose the match u wanna see ;) and its GolTV so it's about a minute later than other strams but its in english!

Lol, everyones opinion change when they go to pep's place...

see you at game time...well i dont know if ill be able to watch it on tv (finally on Tv and not on the comp :D ) and be wired up on the computer so we'll see so just in case im not here my pre-preparations:
    GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! MESSI! :D
    lol

  • Kxevin

    I'd like to see:

    ---------------Valdes------------------
    Sylvinho-----Puyol---------Pique-------Alves
    ------------------Yaya------------------
    --------Hleb-----------------Xavi---------
    -----------------Messi-----------------
    -----Henry------------Eto'o---------------

Why Hleb? As I said, he'll keep possession and not foul at the other end. I think that Guardiola will want to play this one tight, which means at first, don't concede. Hleb isn't going to attack the box like Ineiesta, and will never be a real threat to score goals. But he can retain possession and make the smart pass. In a match that will be played in the midfield, that is critical.

  • ballbeav

i know john is rooting for us today.

  • ballbeav

news from the official site, our initial appeals of Pique and Keita's cards have been denied. We will appeal Keita's once more (as we did with Alves, with success), but we will not appeal Pique's. This means Pique will miss the game on the weekend since it was his fifth yellow. makes me think even more that he will start today.

  • john

Only problem with Yaya-Xavi-Keita is that it puts a LOT of pressure on Xavi to hold possession. I'm not going to say Yaya is bad at a holding role (though I AM going to say that Keita is, or has been this season, anyways) but he's not great, either. And if it weren't for the past couple games, I'd say "who better than Xavi to shoulder that responsibility?" But I'd actually go with Hleb-Xavi-Yaya. Hell, I'd even go with Eidur-Xavi-Yaya, call me crazy. But Pep's come to the same crazy conclusion several times this season, and not to ill effect.

I think Busquets is the perfect second half sub once a lead has been established. Great at breaking up play, knows how to get under the opponent's collective skin, and can link passes to catch a scrambling defense off their guard.

And while I'm spouting off opinions, I also would give Sylvinho the nod for this one. He's got a hell of a cross, and has the smarts to make up for the old parts.

  • Colin

After reading kamikaze kontiki's preview at pep's place, I'm thinking play a midfield of Yaya - Xavi - Keita. Yaya can stop Juninho, and that midfield should still dominate possession.

Keita would move up as another target man in the box. That will put pressure on Lyon's weak left, free up Henry even more, and Lyon can't cheat to the right on Messi and Alves.

Plus, Keita better be motivated as hell right now.

  • Kxevin

Yes, he does, indeed. I automatically think of Central Time as "God's Time," so I don't even account for that other stuff. :D

  • Kevin means ESPN Classic will show it at 4pm Central time and 5pm EST, by the way.

  • Kxevin

Um, make that "match-altering stops," instead of "mat stops." :D

  • Kxevin

Just an FYI, ESPN Classic will be delaying the match at 4 p.m. for you folks who want English commentary with your 2+ hours late match.

In many ways, this will be an interesting match. Lyon is in its usual place, at the top of Ligue 1, a league they really are too good for, I think. Nobody is even coming close to displacing them from their perch.

So, like us, they haven't really had much adversity until recently. Us, with our mental collapse against Espanyol and them, with that horrid incident of racist chanting that disrupted their play and right back, so much so that he took two yellows to get off the pitch.

Both sides are facing injuries that gut one side, them on the right and us on the left.

I don't really know how this one is going to wind up, frankly. With a full week's rest, and not such a clunker against Espanyol topping off a recent run of less-than-inspiring play of late, I'd be as confident as everyone else about this one.

Or Guardiola could work some mojo, have the lads flying and this one could be over by halftime.

Somehow I doubt it, since both sides will be drum-tight. I could even see a 0-0 here, or the predicted 1-1.

I'm also expecting to see some Hleb, because of his midfield control and lack of fouling. Then again, when has Guardiola ever done what we've expected, right?

Henry is the key player in this match. Period, the end. If he comes to play, given the right side of Lyon's defense, as Isaiah said, it's going to be go time. We then have a nice, balanced offense that becomes unplayable, and we traipse out of Stade Gerland with a couple of away goals.

--I'm also going to defend Valdes, in the aftermath of the "stupid Valdes" comment. He's had a hell of a season this year. He single-handedly kept us in El Clasico with two stellar saves, one off the VdV blast and then stonewalling Drenthe. If either of those go in, we probably lose. He has a number of other match-saving, and mat stops this season.

I think that in an individual match context, we've all let players have it. But I think that every player on the side, even those who don't always show their worth, has value.

Does anyone know where you can stream these games on the internet? I work 10-6, don't have a TV, and missing these champions games will slowly eat me up inside if I don't see them...Please help!

  • OhYes

Haha great trash-talking, Ramzi. I love it!

I'm so excited that I just made a trip that normally takes me 50minutes in only 25. I don't know how I did it, I think I at some point broke the space-time continuum, but that now means I have more time to waste.

The thing I hate about the CL is that the games are on at the exact same time. I have to wait until much later in the night to see the Inter-ManU rerun and hopefully I wont run into any spoilers.

  • It felt barca guys here need an energy drink :)

And hey! "Maybe we DO have a chance after all!", are you a Lyon Fan? :) thats not a question for a barcelona fan to ask, rephrase! "May be" and "Chance" in one sentence? You may not find these words in a Catalan dictionary!

I am out now for a while before i get my Notebook and Watch the show;)

Have a great game! Or else Lyon fan will come after me afterward :)

  • It's the Champions League. TIME TO GET CRAZY!!!! WOOOOO.

    Okay, must calm down now.

  • Hector

Hehehe! Just joking Ramzi (hence the smiley faces). You know I follow your posts at Pep's Blog and here. :D

But damn! Trash talking and everything! This is awesome.

  • You're right, pean8ts; I have corrected the misspellings of Juninho. I remember typing it and going "that's not right" and then not bothering to look it up.

We'll see what Guardiola thinks this time around after listening to me against Espanyol (I said Puyol or Marquez would start with Pique and I was right, except I guess Puyol and he went with Marquez).

Visca el Barça. Match thread going to go up in a little bit, but for now, discussion is still centered here.

  • Hector there is a fine line between a pessimistic critic and a perfectionist critic, dont get mislead by my previous arguments. And when I say previous I means last two weeks analysis attempts. Read me before that and you will know;)

Being good is something teams like Lyon can get satisfied with, no offense.
I cant accept for barcelona anything else but being perfect.

We can be critical as a Barcelona fans gang. But Lyon fans, you the ones with big hopes, poor creatures don't get mislead, you league one leaders, its not "Nancy" you will play against tonight, The Gods of the game are in the town! Just cover your faces!Do NOT say I did NOT warn you...hope your insurance can afford the mess!

You wanted pre-match warm up? Here you got it! :)

  • ballbeav

great points ramzi. we had abidal and iniesta both missing earlier this season, and we did nothing but win win win. just put in the Yaya.

i think this is the most international of any thread we have had recently. isaiah, i wont dare you to confirm this. im in mexico city and, FWIW, will be giving you a mexico city 'where to watch' later on.

  • Hector

    Halellujah!

Ramzi being optimistic!?!?! Maybe we DO have a chance after all! ....nah, no way. Who are you and what did you do with Ramzi!?

    :D :)

  • They have bad defense, good offense. It will be a gamble for them whatever they plan.

The defense will do fine if we controlled the midfield as we have to. Its there where the game will be played. Barcelona always score ans away goals are harmful in knock outs(dont read this Lyon fans, you may have weak hearts).

We don't have more injury crises than we had in December. We are not worse than what we had been 2 weeks ago. and we weren't bad at all back then, right?;)

Espanyol defeat was a painful smoke bomb, but Lyon fans will not figure out what "smoke bomb" means in French till its too late:P

And Guardiola, don't you dare to prove me wrong!

Prepare your drinks, its party time!

  • Colin

Has anyone watched much Lyon this season? I take it they play a 4-2-3-1, with Benzema up top, Juninho in the hole behind, two wings and two holding mids?

If that's how they play, I like the Yaya - Busi combo to lock down on Juninho. The only other danger will be counters up Barca's right behind Alves, but that's there every match. Two holding mids provides cover for both danger areas, and will help hold the ball.

  • ballbeav

amazing stat i picked up off the barca website -- of the 35 goals Lyon have scored this year, 17 have been from set plays. wow.

  • fidel

remember in all cl games this season Etoo has only played once that is why messi is the top scorer in champions league. and he scored once too. Pep should let him play not Bojan bc we need this game or let pep not take Etoo and Henry out for Busquet the most absurd sub i have ever seen in my entire life. A team down by 2 goals and a coach decide to take his best scorer out for unidentified midfielder.

  • That's Juninho! (not Jouninho) You'll see his name down the screen when he scores a FK... ;-)
Enjoy the game, and Allez l'OL!

  • Hector

Ramzi has a good point. Lyon should attack more than usual with this being their home leg and the Camp Nou being a hard place for anyone to play in. If we score first, we'll have a VERY good chance of winning since they will throw themselves into something close to desperation mode and the spaces and counterattacks will open for us. If THEY score first, we will see a parked bus and things will get mighty hard for our boys.

I also like the Yaya/Busi physical, defensive minded midfield. However, not as much as a Gudy-Hleb-Keita midfield. THATS's what we should do. You hear me Guardiola!?!?!? Put in Gudy, Hleb, and Kieta. Don't listen to Isiah! (*reverse psychology)

One more thing. Remember that Messi can play ANYWHERE on the front line. Expect him to play some attacks on the left as Henry goes to the middle and Eto shifts right (assuming he doesn't get mad at Guardiola) if there is a mismatch on our left to wreck havoc on their defense. That's the beauty of Messi. Defenders are scared shitless because you never know where he will pop up. On a more somber note. If Toulanan man marks Xavi (which wouldn't surprise me), Yaya and Busi will have to be able to either effectively move the ball without much help from Xavi and get it to him near the opponents area where he can hold off Toulalan and look for the pass or be more creative with their passes in the opposing last fourth. IF we score first the Yaya long balls/guided missles will come in handy.

  • eklavya

Wow, your right we haven't seen bojan play like that since i dont know when!wow!

  • eklavya

Your starting line-up is the best but now that you have put it up pep isn't gonna choose it :( what have you done isaiah!?! lol, no seriously I don't think guardiola will risk putting caceres on the left, either puyol or slyvinho I think.

  • daniel

I think that Barcelona game is getting worse and worse!!! The pressure is on Barca players and it's the first time of the season that they have such a pressure. I'm sure they won't be able to handle such a pressure and they will play a confuse and hazardous game just like the three last games they played.
In definitive, LYON will win this game 2-0.
    GO LYON!!!

  • andrew M

good point by ramzi that since this is their home game and i doubt they expect to score much at the camp nou, they are going to come out and play from the beginning giving us the chance to the early goal but if we screw it up like henry did against espanyol it could spell disaster.

my prediction : 4-1 to us. crazy? maybe but someone has to be the optimist and i think we are going to kill them. the team will want to prove themselves after what happened this weekend and i think pep knows another loss will kill our morale.

  • andrew M

here i s a pretty good video from when we played lyon in 2007 in the group stages. nitice how good bojan is, we havent seen him play like this, and ntice that iniesta scores a cracker! but the thing to watch is lyons first goal by juninho, its a freekcik from the halfway line that just bounces around valdes. stupid valdes.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

  • OhYes

I think Henry is going to tear that side up, their defense is going to go nuts trying to contain Messi and Eto'o and everything is going to collapse by the end of the day. They score a goal on a counter attack but Barca takes it 2-1. 2-0 at the Camp Nou.

  • BA

i think if the Cap'n & Rafa Show is on script we shouldn't have any problems dealing with Lyon's attack, centered on Benzema. Lyon lack real width getting forward, and you can't imagine they would have the ball for long stretches at a time as they aren't a possession-oriented team. i think we can play moderately well and still come out with a win; the question is can we rouse ourselves to come out and play moderately well?

although, i'd much rather have Iniesta than Henry running at that inexperienced right-back.

  • Andres

Here to wish you gents good luck against the french I hope all la liga teams make it to the next round ( yes even barcelona ) im tired of this BPL dominance that has been going on for the past couple of years and stuff so hopefully you will beat them like they stole something

    VAMOS ESPANA !!!

  • Alexinho

Well-pointed in your argument for Caceres. I definitely think Puyol should stay in the middle: I just did not like him as left back against Espanyol, and playing against Benzema? We'll need our captain in the middle. I was going to say Sylvinho, for the experience (experience. CL. hand in hand, right?), but I'll trust you, Isaiah.

I'll take Busquets over Keita any day. Just one more game, Xavi, one more...then another...

  • Inara -- yes both teams met up last year, but that doesn't mean Barça knows Lyon or vice versa...we're two different teams from last year, I think. Barça, for one, is wildly different from last year. A lot of the same personnel, sure, but there are several differences between the Rijkaard and Guardiola eras. The first is ball pressure. It is higher and more constant, which changes the nature of the game quite a bit.

This is a different Barcelona than last year's team. Messi is a different beast from last year and wrasslin' him is a different task than it was.

  • Jason

im also very much advocating the Yaya + Busi midfield. our attack might take a hit, but it will deffinitely hurt their attack more. This means Xavi will need to orchestrate perfectly, but if you had to choose anyone in the world to do it, who ELSE would you pick?

Maybe Prof. X has been off because he misses his favorite apprentice (SPF-45)... alot of players play with instinct, and Xavi and Iniesta just seem to know where the other is, and will be 3 seconds in the future, and any given moment... just a thought.

  • Jason

its the champion's league, and to echo Helge's sentiments, i can honestly see a very good, or pretty bad result as definite possibilities.

Again, the keys are deffinietely going to be:
    1. No nonsense in the backline. win it, clear it. Good footing, dont let it become a foot race, because our centerbacks arnt fast.
    2. Starve their midfield. I ussually dont advocate pointless possesion, but it one half of cutting off their supply means intense pressure when they have posession (which is really tiring), then we will have to downshift gears for SOME stretches of the game, and kick the ball around to conserve some energy.
    3. Make out attacks count. Once we do enter their third, we need to be ruthless. Henry needs to make his marker feel inferior, Eto'o needs to unbalance the centerbacks, as to invite our forward runs from xavi, and Alves needs to open up the defense, to give Messi the room to do his thing. And for goshsakes, NO SHOOTING AT THE GOALIE! (yeah Henry, i'm looking at you...)

  • Good Call starting Busquets beside Yaya, and I will hope they will both play behind Xavi instead of having one of them beside him. there is a possibility that we may see Keita and Busquets behind Xavi in the middle instead of Yaya. Isaiah, pep don't listen to me so no worries.

It feels I am nagging often lately, but I think we need to take in consideration that barcelona style is extra exhausting for the players. we need to play more direct style when we feel our batteries are not full. And for some games its even more efficient to play a direct game (I call this match as a sample). Having 2 players as defensive midfielders avoid the need for the players upfront (Xavi-Messi-Henry-eto'o and even Alves)to make deep transitions backward. this "wave like" movements back and forth are a flavor to enjoy in barcelona style, but its not an every match need/possibility.
    Two defensive midfielders:
    1) Make Lyon midfielders squeezed between the Anvel created by Yaya(Keita)+busquets+Alves transition to midfield and the hammers of Xavi-Henry-Messi-eto'o pressing high.

    2) We will be capable to create a battle for Lyon in the midfield when they attempt to counter attack, instead of following them to the edge of our own box. That Brazilian is a free kicks freak so its better to make tactical fouls in the midfield rather than having to do it on the edge of our box. And here I prefer Keita as a DM so he do a tactical foul while facing the opponent (at most he gets a yellow) better than a panic tackle to avoid counters like the one we saw few days ago earning him a red.

    3) this way we can decide how high we need to press Lyon depending on their form. we can win the physical battle, we can dominate the ball and drive them crazy hunting for it, and this way you can even have Sylvinho and Alves on the flanks if you want to go crazy for offense(Though I don't recommend for the start).

In knock out stage, time is on your side when you play the first game away from home. make sure they don't score early and they will start taking more risks going forward in the second half, then you seal the deal. JUST DONT let them score early! one goal for them may sound enough to park a bus and generate counters, and they have the tools.

Benzema will play with lot of motivation (beside the normal high incentives for any player while playing against barcelona). He is heading my list of favorites for barcelona to sign, lets see how he can perform in big games, though he wasnt disappointing against Man UTD.

Again a more direct style do the job and save the energy for whats coming next, I hope to see a surgeons performance, not a serial killers party, Even though its more exciting.

    Good luck.

  • Inara47

Lyon and Barca did meet up in the group stages last year, so I'd say both teams are familiar with each other. As you pointed out, our RB situation is a major weakness, and Puel will either play a 19 year kid who's barely out of the reserves or an oft-injured CB who was sent off two weeks ago because he was traumatized by horrible racial insults.

  • ballbeav

also, this is not the game to start caceres, in my opinion. i think sylvinho will do fine and this will allow puyol to partner whoever in the middle. pique will miss the game against atletico unless his yellow is rescinded (we are appealing both his yellow and keita's red) so i can see him starting for either puyol OR marquez, both whom i believe to be <100%.

I have no idea how this match is goin to end, every possible result with a total of 5 goals or less is in my mind... But it would be awesome if we win, that would make my day - and give confidence for the next tasks.

I think not conceiding any free-kicks in the shooting range of Juninho is absolutely vital as you already said. This guy is still the best, he's better than C. Ronaldo or whoever. I think Pierre van Hooijdonk was equally good, but I don't know if he's still active.

i need henry to be able to break down their 3rd- or 4th-choice right back, for him to have any hope in this barca heart o' mine. this is the time.

Yes I'm the first to comment.

I could not agree anymore with the line up. Although of Guardiola decided to put Hleb in for Busi I would not kind too much. I think he can redeem himself.

But they should not be too tired as they did not play this weekend. It was the Crackovia team that played. So we should be perfectly fit.
