Could it be? Might it be?

By: Kevin | July 11th, 2009

Sport is reporting that the Monday meeting with Villa and Llorente et al, will almost certainly unlock the doors for Villa to make his move to us.

Of course it is Sport, which has only a little bit of lean, right?

El Mundo Deportivo is a little more reserved, saying there will be a meeting, in which Villa will meet with folks and talk about some stuff.

You Spanish speakers should feel free to say “You mis-translated it, knucklehead.”

–Monday is the apparent “do something, dummy” deadline for Filipe, who is trying, without rocking the boat too much, to force a transfer. Apparently the fiscal brains over at Depor are wondering why the hell Lendoiro is turning down 10 million Euros. His answer, apparently, is “Because yo mama,” or some such. The agent is antsy, the player is antsy, the board is antsy, Depor’s coach is antsy. Everybody wants this thing to happen except for one obstinate club president. The price offered varies, depending upon where you look, anywhere from 8 to 10m. Lendoiro is in effect saying that we’re cheapskates.

Does that strike anyone else as kinda goofy?

–Speaking of keeping ‘em down on the farm, expect the official Keirrison announcement this week, at long last. No, it won’t be the last transfer of this summer, but it will almost certainly be the first. In an exclusive interview, Sport talked to the Brazilian sensation question mark, who said “I was always Barca.”

Coaches, agents and club officials are all very clear that it would have been impossible to keep him there. Keirrison’s affection for us is clear from the contract clause that would make anyone else pay 50m Euros for his transfer, and E3.50 for us. (Note: This last price is purely speculative.)

–Still no news on the Eto’o front, with less than two weeks to go before the start of training camp. Now that Citeh has pulled out of the “race,” and AC Milan has said “Too rich for our blood,” an interesting situation is developing with our Cameroonian striker. Could he be the best player that nobody wants? Our price, between 25-30m is right, so what’s the holdup? Good question. Expect many, many questions at Guardiola’s first media availability, right?

–Is anyone aware that we will be playing for SIX trophies this season? Bojan Krkic is. When asked by a clearly misguided young’un at a recent event, how he was going to feel when the Evil Empire won everything, Krkic replied: “They can’t win everything because Barca will battle to win six titles and [The Evildoers] can only win three.”

For those keeping score, that’s Spanish Supercopa, UEFA Supercup, Club Worlds, Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League.

Too bad “La Sexta” is already taken by a television station.

Finally, a picture that needs no introduction:

The Portland Timbers offered me a contract, but I told them that I’ve got interest from Chelsea. Goal.com has confirmed it:

We don’t need “His name is Christian Poulsen” jokes running around here. And that’s your cue to run away with just such jokes, people.

Goal.com follows everyone else weighing in with the obvious: We’re considering non-Villa options, since the price that Valencia are seeking is absurd.

    http://goal.com/en-us/news/88/spain/2009/07/14/1382742/joan-laporta-barcelona-considering-alternatives-to-david

He also says that Eto’o will be reporting to pre-season on Monday, like everyone else, as he is still a player under contract. Man, is that going to be fun.

Hector, Talking football wise and not transfer wise, Its eto’o we are talking about, not Ronaldo. He cant dribble a whole team and score. He need to have chemistry with his teammates if he want to score. He knows it, believe me. If he does not pass to Xavi, Xavi will not pass to him. So as Messi and co. Now how will that sound?;)

If he turned to be so selfish on the field in a way that damage the team, he will be benched. As simple as that. You will see more of Henry as a striker then, with iniesta on the left and Keita beside Xavi. More of Gudi, Bojan, Pedro or Hleb against smaller teams. And I am only mentioning the players we have already. He will not impress anyone this way right? So no worries about this one.

Kevin, I am more the pragmatic type. If registering Guti (Ugh!!) in Barcelona squad wins me a title, I will register him with big smile and buy him a cake (But I want join him to eat it!). I am more confident about Eto’o output next season without contract extention than I will be if he extended.

ON the ecconomic fold. I dont think we will be losing a lot as well. With the current market inflation any player will cost 15 M more than his fair price. Next summer we will not have a similar craziness unless if Man City won a spot for the CL. Even then I doubt they will automaticaly generate the image to sign big names. but its all unlikely.

So, if we failed to sell eto’o for 25 M (Barcelona are demanding 35 M), we will simple lose him for free next summer and buy a new striker for almost a fair price. All in all will cost 10 M more than getting that new striker now and selling eto’o straight forward. Now evaluating the two options of either buying a new striker next summer for 10 M more or making a panic despirate buy at the moment and offloading eto’o makes the risk of both options too close to consider one of them as brilliance and the other as catostrophic. Really.

I believe the third option of extending eto’o contract so he turn to become the long term option for barcelona till he is over 30, with the type of strikers he is, is the more complicated option in his plus and minus than the first two alternatives.

And here I am not supporting any alternative. I am just pointing out that we are not really in the crise that the debate sound to express. Not for me at least. I am calm about it. I will wait till I see how it will end out. Then deal with the way it goes.

And no word on Filipe. His agent is headed to Depor’s HQ to try to make something happen, but Lendoiro seems to be taking all this stuff personally.

True, Ramzi, all true. It’s just the stubborn mule in me that wouldn’t even risk using (hence registering) Eto’o. He would still be auditioning for a role somewhere. I think the only real danger in waiting is if someone prises Villa loose in the January window, once the shell that is Dalport comes to light and they have to sell players.

But short term: Guiza for 15m?

Guiza would be a great buy for a relatively good price.

I also think we should get a young DM that will not brake the bank, since I do not think Paulsen has enough skill to play the way Barcelona has to (possesion, passing accuracy, & movement). If that is a problem, sign a CB and move Marquez to DM (although it is only needed as a temporary move while the ACN is going on). He is a way better DM that Paulsen, although he has lost a step, which can lead to his tendency to foul around the box.

Should solve plan B.. And I’m sure he wouldn’t mind being benched.. But I think if we wanted him, we would have done so last year.. 15m sounds petty cash right now..

I am also a little upset that Juve is able to sign Felipe Melo for a relatively reasonable price (this transfer season, at least) although not yet official. Why can’t we go after him? He is what we are looking for (young DM, great skill on the ball).

I have to say that the Barca front office has dissapointed me this transfer season. I think that we should of had the Felipe (LB) signing wrapped up right after the season. We knew we needed a replacement for Silvynho yet we are getting closer to the start of preseason and we are still waiting… and waiting… and waiting.

Felipe Melo is good. We wanted him last season. But he demands to be an automatic starter. Juventus, possibly. Barcelona, no.

Beside, the only DM I will run after will be Mascherano. Or else we can stick to Busquets, Marquez, Henrique, Pique… All can handle that position when Both Keita and Yaya are not available. so I would only be excited to upgrade that position, not to create depth. As DM depth drops deep down on the priority table of the squad needs. At least for me.

Goal.com has Michel Bastos on his way to lyon, would’ve been a great candidate for the LW maybe..

I too think that at least for the LB position we should’ve moved immediately after the season. as Carles P said: we knew we were going to need a replacement for sylvinho along time. For the other transfers I can accept that the board needed a little more time (eto’o matter and other renewals) but then the EE stirred everything up..

quotes from Laporta, from the official site, translated from spanish

Asked by the media about interest in striker David Villa, Laporta underlined that the club is clear: “We will not throw the house out the window. We will make the touchups that we need to make but players that we want must be acquired only under reasonable conditions.”

    Distintas opciones

“Villa es un jugador que podría interesarnos en unas condiciones determinadas pero si éstas no se dan, debemos activar otras opciones igualmente válidas y evaluaremos cuál de ellas se adapta a las condiciones que nos interesan a nosotros”

“Villa is a player that could interest us in certain circumstances, but if these conditions dont exist, we must look at other equally valid options and we will evaluate which of them can be adapted to our interests.” (total politico-speak)

The president has recognized that the position that could be reinforced more quickly is that of left winger (lateral). according to laporta, “this could happen in a not-very-long period of time.” (more politico-speak, or maybe thats just how they speak in spanish heh heh)

Between July 20 and 27 the players will beging to arrive at training. Asked if July 27 is the deadline to resolve gaps in the squad, laporta has pointed out that the club will go at its own pace. “It would be desirable to have more resolved by that date, but we wont make a deadline for ourselves that would make us vary our plans or strategy.”

About the incorporation of Etoo in these trainings, laporta has explained that the cameroonian is a player with a contractor ‘in vigor’. “Nothing changes if/when Etoo returns. He has a contract in vigor and the club will attempt to make him happy.”
