Farewell, R10, it’s been a good run (well, not fully)

By: Kevin | July 15th, 2008

It is official. The end of an era of sorts for FC Barcelona. Reads the beginning of the statement by the club:

AC Milan and Barcelona have reached an agreement in principle over the transfer of Ronaldinho to the Italian club. The Brazilian will take a medical examination on Wednesday in Milan. And let the record show that somebody is pretty excited about it.

What made the deal actually and for-real possible was Ronaldinho’s renouncing his 15% cut of the deal, which is for 21 million Euros, plus another 4 million should Milan qualify for Champions League, something that is pretty much in the “Duh!” category, even if he does a repeat of this season past, which I don’t expect.

As Txiki said, “The player will always decide where he wants to play. We can have 40 different offers but in the end, what counts is the player’s own desire.”

We were grownups about this one, as befits our gratitude to Ronaldinho. We could have dug our heels in and forced Milan to match or come closer to the 32 million offered by Citeh. We’ve all seen it recently with Hernanes, Arshavin and Adebayor. Glad we chose to man up and do the right thing.

Fiscally, the deal makes perfect sense for AC Milan, and for us. They will get his transfer fee back in shirt sales in about 10 seconds. Right now, number 10 is being worn by Clarence Seedorf. Hmmm. Wonder how those negotiations are going? Seedorf, back when this started, was on the record as saying that R10 wouldn’t be at AC Milan, since he was S10. Stay tuned for that one.

Now, this gives AC Milan an attacking force of Kaka, whose life should become easier if Ronaldinho wants to play. Inzaghi will get new life, and Pato is going to go hog wild. If he actually shows up ready and interested, AC Milan will be the favorites for the title, particularly now that they have dumped Ronaldo and his dead weight.

So what the heck happened?

This saga began, really, with introduction of a sterner, more controlled locker room. No partying, no gallivanting, etc. The players weren’t into it, Rijkaard didn’t seem to be into it, saying in effect, with a wink and a nod, that boys will be boys.

Then came the “black sheep” allegations from Edmilson, saying “Within our group of players and coaches, we have formed a family. And many times in a family there are black sheep.”

It was clear to all that Ronaldinho was the sheep in question, and it seemed that from there, things went swiftly downhill. He was injured. No, he wasn’t, he was just benched. He’ll play. No, he won’t. He wants to play, but Rijkaard won’t let me. And on and on. Rijkaard’s loose locker room seemed to bite him in the butt at the wrong time, and Ronaldinho just wasn’t the same.

So an era has ended.

FIFA Player of the Year most recently in 2004 AND 2005, accolades and joy galore.

There is so much to remember him by. Most recently, the brilliant bicycle kick goal against Atletico Madrid that made the top of ESPN’s “Plays of the Week,” the rarest of the rare occurrences for football. And it took a play by the rarest of rare players to make that cut.

The free kick that went under the Werder Bremen wall.

The shimmy goal against Chelsea.

How he turned the Evil Empire on its ear and recieved a standing ovation at the Bernabeu in a 3-0 thrashing that we delivered to them at their home.

He has been great for us. Two league titles, two Copa titles, one Champions League title, and play after play after play that featured brilliance and the sheer joy of playing the game. The smile was omnipresent, a childlike glee at things that he seemed to be just discovering that he could do.

If that Ronaldinho were still here, I would be lamenting this transfer. But as it is, I am happy to have it happen, for us and for him. He wasn’t happy with us, as we weren’t happy with him. The price that we got for him, while far below the 32 million offered by Manchester City, was in accordance with the player’s wishes. It was an act of class and style, as befits the service that he brought to us.

Simply put, as an icon, he is irreplacable. At his best, he was far and away the best player on the planet, able to beat three defenders or somehow tie the ball to his foot, ready to hit an in-stride teammate with a perfect pass.

But that Ronaldinho is, for us, long gone.

So farewell, you Wascally Bwazilian. I wish you well until AC Milan faces us in Champions League, then know that Yaya is going to put the boot in, and leave it in until Puyol comes to finish you off. And I am going to laugh.

    Ronnie, we hardly knew ye!

No, scratch that — we knew ye far too well. We saw the best of you, and the worst of you. But we’ll try to remember only the good things.

You sold lots of Barca shirts, and brought us silverware. When you brought the Bernabeu to its feet, you won an eternal place in the Barca pantheon.

Have a great time in the San Siro. We hope the fans there take you to their hearts. But for Heaven’s sake, don’t follow the other Ronnie’s footsteps and go from Milan to Madrid.

    Keep smiling, Ronnie. Ciao!

SLIGHT ADVANTAGE??!! Sorry for the all-caps there, folks!

I am, simply put, outraged, and the league should be ashamed of itself. Why not just give you guys the trophy right now? I could’t find a week in which (excepting El Clasico) you didn’t get our previous week’s opponent.

Given the reality of how teams play both our clubs, they go all out for us, then have just a week to get re-energized for you, which is difficult in most cases. It’s the same reason two-legged ties are often clunky for the return leg.

I was going to calm down before doing a post about it. I can’t see the logic in it. It doesn’t seem fair, though I would raise that advantage from “slight” to “significant.” And I can’t think of a time that has ever happened.

Man….first Giralt, now the Liga? Everybody’s out to get us! :D

We’ll see how it plays out, Corey. But on paper, we’re first in the lions den.

I read all the comments above..and its true I am sad about Ronnie leaving but for all he gave Barcelona, I’d always like to think of what more he could have given us had it not been his lack motivation, other factors etc etc…I guess that is why I would not rank him among the best athletes I have seen/admired..he was orders of magnitude better than any player on the field on his day but those days were too short..that it helped us to one C’League i am grateful and happy about, but as I look at it, it is WAY more difficult to sustain excellence than to achieve it for a short time
…. And lastly I have to acknowledge that this is a team sport and he alone could not carry the team, so Barca should also shoulder the blame for not winning more titles when they were good…But his motivation levels and constant sulking/partying only led me to believe he was one of them holding the team back rather than the other way around..

He gave us some of the most memorable moments in our recent history. The awards, the trophies, the goals, the passes, the tricks, the smiles on his face and ours. He had been magnificent. Unfortunately, watching him over the last 18months, when he played, was a different story. It was like watching an bad impersonator. He didn’t have the personality or ability of the real Ronnie. He will be missed. As a player he’s up with the greats. On his game, he was devastating.
The deal was fair. As a player, now, he isn’t worth it. He has still could be great but he may never be. He is marketable and Milan certainly need that. As you said, Kxevin, a win/win/win. As a Barca fan I’m pleased, as a football fan and, more specifically, a Ronnie fan I hope he does regain some of his joy again.

Txiki has said that no striker will arrive until Eto’o finds a new home because they don’t want a situation where we have 4 central strikers, Henry, Bojan, Eto’o and that other striker. It’ll be Eto’o OR Adebayor or whoever.

We should pick up Thiago Neves or Arshavin on the cheap to complete the squad and let nature take its course on the Eto’o thing. If we don’t get €25-30million for him we can’t deal. I don’t know who exactly to get. There is nobody that has got everyone excited. Benzema is the solution, 12 months too late.
If we got Drogba for 1/2 years I’d probably be happy enough. Not that I like him, but he offers something so different to everyone else we have. If we could get him cheap, around €15million, then it would be a Larsson type solution until Mr Aulas gives us we want.

Barcelona have won themselves a reputation for a Saturn-like habit of devouring their own sons; Maradona, Bernd Schuster, Romario, Ronaldo, Rivaldo were all lauded as heroes but ended their careers at the Nou Camp unhappily.
above is an excerpt from an article about R10. It just echoes what many of us have been saying. You can add Deco and Eto too I guess to that list. Or who know’s in the future even Messi or Bojan.

anyway, does anyone have Barca’s league fixture dates?

    http://fcbtransfers.blogspot.com/2008/07/arshavin-waiting-for-call-from.html
Full article on Arshavin over a Pep’s place. Great picture too. He has a real love of the club and should really be gambled on under €18million. He has pace, scores goals, assists, and has 4 years ahead of him.
He should be signed in order to give us a real threat from the left side.
Also, if Messi gets injured we’d have no real winger to fill in either. Messi is the only winger in the squad, regardless of how many versatile players we have. Iniesta, Hleb, Bojan and Henry can all “fill in” there but would rather play in a different position.

Eto’o to Uzbekistan appeared again today. Supposedly he flew to Uzbekistan today. Maybe he has lost his marbles.
If sign a replacement for him our squad will be complete.

    GK: Valdes Pinto Jorquera
RB: D.Alves Oleguer (Pique) (Caceres) (Puyol)
CB: Puyol Pique Caceres Marquez Milito (Abidal)
    LB: Abidal Sylvinho (Caceres)
DM: Yaya (Keita) (Marquez) (Pique) (Caceres) (Xavi)
    CM: Xavi Iniesta Keita Hleb
RF: Messi (Arshavin) (Bojan) (Iniesta) (Hleb)
LF: Arshavin (Iniesta) (Hleb) (Henry) (Bojan)
ST: Henry Bojan Eto’o(or his replacement)

Sounds pretty full to me. Depth and plenty of options everywhere

This has been the craziest footie news day EVER.

–Liga Mexicana were hoodwinked by a fake Sven Goran Eriksson.

–Man U is making a mystery bid for a player that they won’t tell anyone about.

–Eto’o was photographed IN FREAKIN’ UZBEKISTAN! (Is PhotoShop that good? Lordy!)

    http://www.goal.com/en-US/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=780116

Now, he did say that he wouldn’t leave, except for a club that had Champions League football. Asian Champions League counts, I guess. My only question is what’s in it for us? Should be about 30 million.

–We’re after Robinho, for what, I couldn’t possibly tell you. Yes, he’s a winger and we could always use another one or two for depth, but he would demand first-team duties. And has he been that closely identified with the EE where he can’t make the direct swap? And what the hell would he do for us that we don’t already have, except cost a lot of money?

–Articles about us are saying that we’re mean to players who don’t want to play, get fat, go crazy, get monstrous egos, etc, etc. How dare we have enough talent to tell those guys to take a hike?

    Craziness.

    Now, for the plausible stuff.

We’re back in frame for Berbatov, apparently, even though two days ago he was signed, sealed and delivered to Old Trafford. We’ve come to our senses on the Adebayor fee, a laudable development. For the record, I love him as a striker, but not a 38 million Euro striker. Berbatov would be more like 25, a sum that we just happen to have lying around now. :D

S10 has said that he will give up the No. 10 shirt to our most recent sale. The black helicopters hovering over his house and chanted “Malocchio,” had nothing at all to do with his decision. :D

Arshavin still wants to come, and has all but said that his club is crazy for its valuation of him. Further, he hopes that we can still afford him. No worries there, he should be more worried about getting screwed by Zenit’s intransigence.

Hleb, speaking of things making Arshavin irrelevant, is saying that he would even play keeper to get into the side. He’s saying all the right things, as is as much a class act as was suspected….for now. As we all know, players can go funky in a heartbeat.

And that’s all I have for now. More on that Eto’o craziness as we learn more. But for now, I’m floored.

couple of “topics with txiki” today:

    On messi in the olympics:
“we continue thinking we are in the right…the olympic spirit is talked about, of such importance, and preserving that spirit, but there is also the spirit of the Champions League, that is important i believe for all us, this year that we are obligated to play a qualifying match for the champions, a fundamental game, and i believe that FIFA understands that, they already understood it…” [note that Laporta also made this same "spirit of the Champions League" comparison.....boooo...]

“we have to speak about it, that is to say, in this sense, if we are in agreement, and we if the offer is good for us, well take it…like pep said, it must be something that is good for everyone…we have until the 31st of august.” “[Etoo's departure] conditions the arrival of a central striker. …we would not like to find ourselves with four central strikers. That’s not the idea that we have.”

he also said that there are very good personal and professional relations between the player, his represenatatives and the club. also that the club would not rule out selling him to another Liga club.

i think they should let messi play in the olympics, if he wants, lest he be disillusioned.

They can’t prevent it, since Messi is an under-23 player. So they can hem and haw, but it is best to give him our blessing for the player goodwill sake.

I think we would sell Eto’o to whomever gave us 30 million Euros first. The player would be the real issue, as in would he want to go there.

Prima facie, the Uzbek thing might not be completely crazy. You go there for a year, tear the place up, make enough money for the rest of your life, then return to Europe, free and clear of the encumbrance of a big-ass transfer fee.

    I can’t believe I’m typing this….

I bet if Berbatov is sulking at not being able to play in the Champions League this year at Spurs, Ramos would want him shipped to Barca rather than United..there is some bad blood between Utd. and Spurs after Utd. took Carrick!..if you look at who is a better player in the air b/w Ade and Berb..it has to be the latter..also his first touch is exquisite..also he is cheaper being older …

The Uzbeks want Eto’o? Why — did Borat turn them down?

I gotta say, I was skeptical about Hleb, but if we did say that he was prepared to play in any position, including goal, then he gets high marks for having the right attitude. Fewer prima donnas, more team players — that’s what we need.

Getting Robinho wouldnt be a such a bad thing considering he likes playing on the left wing, and we have no natural left-wingers. That frees up Henry, Bojan and Eto’o to play the #9 spot, and Messi loves the right side, so i think it couldt work out.

Now it seems that people are admitting that the Eto’o thing was “just a visit,” and that there probably isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that he will be signing anything, not even a hotel bill, in Uzbekistan.

    We need both…
For the left wing spot either Arshavin or Thiago Neves
Arshavin is a perfect fit for the squad. Technically he is definitely up to our standard. Two footed, has plenty of pace and scores around 1 in 4/5 matches consistently. He may not be very big but as a winger he should be the one putting in the crosses. A front three of Arshavin, Henry and Messi has bags of pace – we could even break quickly every now and then.
Thiago Neves would be a different signing. He would be bought to add depth to the squad and be a more long-term signing. He has a lot of potential and is more of a roaming forward than an out-and-out winger. He scores more goals than most wingers and is bigger than Arshavin or Messi on the other wing. One potential short-term problem is another club v country olympics row if he arrives.
For the striker we should only have three realistic options… Berbatov, Huntelaar and Drogba.
Berbatov is big, good in the air, technically the best of the three and although he may not be as consistent as the other two, he normally scores in the big matches. His first touch, passing and creativity could be very successful in La Liga, like Fredi Kanoute. We would also be in the unfamiliar situation in that we would have the upperhand in negotiations. Spurs would presumably accept a lower bid from us than from Man Utd.
Huntelaar is younger and would cost around the same. He is a goal machine in Holland but is not as dominant in the air as the other two. Long-term he is a very good option.
Drogba would definitely be a short-term option as a 31yr old. He would do the job though. He scores goals in big matches and is a physically powerful striker that could get us through the harder matches, at home and in Europe. He would certainly create problems for the English defenses that we have struggled with in recent seasons but he was injury prone last season.
I’ll be happy with either winger or any of the forwards to replace Eto’o so long as we aren’t bent over for a transfer fee.

On another note, Txiki and Laporta should try to find a compromise than we could have Messi for the second leg of the Champions League qualifier if we need him but we have to think long term and make sure Messi is kept very happy. I know the qualifier is important but the other players should have no problem getting through the team it comes up against without him.

if i could have Barça sign any one other player this summer, it would be Arshavin. he’s got outstanding technical skill, tremendous pace, versatility, strong motivation and an extra bit of cheekiness that can earn goals even when they maybe shouldn’t have come. his ability to dribble through defenders and make runs to the touchline means that between him and Messi (the true master at that particular art) pulling opposing teams’ entire back lines to themselves, we could hire a janitor to stand in the middle and finish.

Drogba’s dressing room attitude and outward petulance almost automatically disqualifies him in my book. we’ve had enough giant-egoed players over the past few years for me, and all of the new signings seem not just properly motivated but genuinely enthusiastic about the club. why risk spoiling that with a crybaby and attention whore like Drogba, even if he scores 25 goals a season?

Huntelaar might be a good long-term prospect, but frankly the differences between the Dutch and Spanish leagues make me a little wary as to his ability to effectively play our style.

Berbatov is a better striker than a lot of people give him credit for, but if we DO end up signing a winger, i can’t find a place for a player like Berbatov in the squad. it seems to me that it is either a central striker OR a winger, and at this point i’d take the winger; particularly if it is Arshavin.
