Faux International Week!

By: Isaiah | March 26th, 2008

[Updated version]

Eight Barcelona players have been called up to play for their national sides in friendlies this week. Spain has called upon Puyol, Xavi, and Iniesta to play Italy and Zambrotta. I’m sure they’ll slide in hard against each other. Abidal and Thuram got the call from France, as did Henry, but the latter withdrew through injury, which is both surprising since he finished the game against Valladolid and it’s also worrisome because of our dearth of healthy players. France is going to play England in a preview of the Euro2008 matchup…wait, no, England’s not in it. (Low blow) But they are really going to play a friendly and Sir Bex will be there and the circus will be in full swing…wooo…In other news, Gudjohnsen will play for Iceland against Slovakia, Argentina has called up Gabi Milito for the friendly against Egypt, and Gai Assulin, another wunderkid in our reserve squad, looks set play for Israel for the first time against Chile.

Then there’s this little kid named Bojan. Maybe you’ve heard of him. Well he’s not playing for the full Spanish side, but I suspect that’s only because the U-21 side has a competitive match against Kazakhstan in their bid to qualify for the U-21 European championship. Good luck, Bojan, and come back healthy. How will the defenders going up against him handle that kind of skill and maturity? After all, the kid plays for Barcelona’s first team regularly and has proved the difference several times throughout the year.

So everyone goes off a-traveling and then has to shoot right back home for the Betis away match (to be played behind closed doors) on Saturday. Sheesh. Then it’s Champions League (!!!!!) on Tuesday, April 1. So that’s a pretty tough schedule and while I generally respect international friendlies, I have to somewhat peeved that they’re going on during a moment when all is not well at the Camp Nou, at least not in the health sense.

Here’s hoping everyone comes back from international duty healthy and re-energized! Update! Milito has suffered a “groin strain” while training with Argentina in Cairo. Milito will undergo tests tomorrow to determine how long he’ll be out.

Asulin is pretty impressive, my money is on him and Thiago to be the next break throughs from the Barca B into the first team. Wish Real promoted its talented youngsters like Barca is…

Yeah, i saw that about Milito. yikes. i hope he can be back soon for us. In re: Henry, all reports have said he should be able to play this weekend at Betis.

Just saw an interviw with Dos Santos on the FCB website. He says he is still sufffering from the same blow to his ankle received in the game against Alcoyano in the Copa. Some thug just brutalized the poor kid. He said he had received three “infiltrations” (is this like a cortisone shot?) and that they would have to operate on him after the season! But he said for now he is ready to play…so we might see him again soon. He is practicing with the team.

Marquez and Deco worked out individually on the field, and Ronnie and Toure didnt come out to play. The latter is still getting his lower back worked on. and ronnie?

At the 60 minute mark, Les Bleus are up 1-0 on England. Thuram is showing very well, but he always does. His style is made for international football and Champions League.

Henry is why he isn’t playing in the France side. It’s a friendly, and he’s really focussing on us.

I fear that Ronnie is done for us. Those Inter rumors were pretty specific, particularly the Nike sponsorship of the deal.

I’ll believe the Ronnie rumors when the deal is signed, Kevin.

I know. You’d think just from the shirt sales that we would want to keep Ronaldinho. My informal polling at matches tells me that he is still, even with the ascendancy of Messi, far and away the most popular shirt.

I think that Thiago from BarcaB will be a first-teamer. He has that Deco aura about him. Wouldn’t it be sweet if he turned out to be THAT good.

    “oh, crap” department.

after the news about milito, turns out puyol came off after only 16 minutes cos he hurt his right ankle (in the match against italy). we’ll know on thursday the extent of the injury. and that bastard aragones made xavi and iniesta go the full 90, though he made 6 substitutions during the match. even fabregas came off after 67 minutes.

Bojan’s goal was Ronniesque. I propose Ronniesque as a new word to the language of football. It can be used in a multitude of ways (inventive footballing, big smiles or all night partying). Like, I bar hopped all night, stayed up until 6 in the morning with 10 chicas and requested 400 condoms, it was Ronniesque. It will be interesting to see what happens in the offseason this year. Who goes, Ronnie or Frank or both? And who do we bring in with the massive amount of euros recevied from Ronnie’s transfer?

    so many threads///

    latest in the injury dept:

milito is out against Betis. they hope to have him ready for Schalke. Puyol is doubtful — the tests show his bone and ligaments are fine, so its just a “contusion” to the right ankle. it will be wait-and-see.

could we have thuram and abidal in the middle, flanked by sylvinho and zamby?

toure and henry trained with the group today, sothat is good news/

    Mother knows best Kevin,

Dinho Shirts sales have plunged (or at least they had as of Nov) :

    http://www.soccerway.com/news/2007/Nov/21/ronaldinhos-poor-form-hits-shirt-sales—report/

…and while we’re dispensing motherly advice: Friendlies/International duties Blow!…it’s like a freaking MLB allstar week every other month. Seems like they could work out a schedule with an extended winter break for Southern hemesphere touneys and friendlys etc.

    …maybe I just don’t understand these things.

I think it’s probable both Ronnie and Rijky go. A shame they’re such nice boys.
