L’Affaire Eto’o, a.k.a. “Transfer wheat from the chaff”

By: Kevin | June 10th, 2009

And so it begins. We’ve recapped the season, and Isaiah doled out a most excellent State of the Liga post. It’s Silly Season time, when everybody and their mamas are for sale.

Or not.

Club presidents meet to discuss the fate of all of their stars.

Or not.

We are in a rare position of having just come off of the most successful season of any Spanish club, period, full stop. The question now is where do we go from here? The last time we had major success, grabbing the double in double-ought-six, we stood pat.

And look where that got us.

So the real question is, what do we do?

Without question, our most unsettled player is Samuel Eto’o. We all know his stats, we all know what he brings to the table. Dependent upon what/who/tea leaves/discarded sports rag you read, he’s going to be signed for life, or sold first chance the side gets.

All that we know for sure is that he is in the last year of a contract, the “go or renew” year. We have to renew him now, sell him if we can’t/don’t want to, or risk having him leave on a free.

That’s what we know. Everything else is speculation.

Laporta has been saying nice things about our Samu.

Txiki and Guardiola have been silent. Is this because they’re holed up with a “who’s available” chart of European players?

Um, that’s in the “don’t know” category.

Latest news, coming from El Mundo Deportivo, is that a deal has been reached with Inter for Ibrahimovic. This is, if my math is correct, about the third time that this has happened. :D Yet both players are still where they are.

Sez EMD, here’s the deal: Eto’o+10m for Ibrahimovic. L’Equipe and Sport say that Eto’o jetted away from the Cameroon practice to Italy, to meet with Mourinho to discuss Inter’s plans, and that AC Milan might be in the picture.

Hmmm. Inter will suddenly accept, for a player whom they valued at 80m just last week, a Cranky Cameroonian and Laporta’s pocket change?

Despite all the effusion coming from Laporta, there’s no question that the silence from Txiki and Guardiola has been deafening. This is the biggest issue that we have to solve, and here’s my view, in a single word:

SELL

I know what he’s done for the club, and I know what he can do for the club. Every goal is loved and appreciated, so let’s nip those howls right in the bud.

But….

–He’s in the last year of a contract that, frankly, if he were interested in renewing, would have been done by now on both sides of the aisle, his and ours.

–We absolutely canNOT risk him leaving on a free.

–I just don’t think he wants to be here, and hasn’t since the side tried to sell him last summer. His excellent year was to present the best possible picture for his upcoming European auction.

–We won’t have the same year, if we have the same attack. It’s easy to say “we won the treble, why change anything?” It was the same thought for ‘07, and somebody please tell me what we won that season.

So. There are press reports, and absolutely nothing is a reality, except that Eto’o is available, and Ibrahimovic wants to leave Inter, for a club that has a shot at Champions League glory.

The rest is for us to natter about. What say ye, everyone?

since when do Madrid NEED Villa? they have Higuain and van Nistelrooy, both of whom can score nearly as many goals and who cost…. nothing.

    BA:

Madrid wants Villa to fill in the “Spanish starss” slot especially now that they can’t get Cesc or Alonso. and I think they want to get rid of the dutch contingent. It’s more to do with shirt sales and tactic after probably.

If Man U is smart, they will use some of the money to bolster the midfield.

    Have we signed anyone yet?

Welcome to La Liga, Thong Boy!

Thank goodness. Now RM is even MORE hateable. And there I was thinking it would be hard to learn to hate Kaká and Florentino gives me this gift.

I guess they intend to beat us 7-6 because they still have not shored up their defense or their center-midfield. Fitting Kaka and Thong Boy in the same line-up will be an interesting conundrum. Kaká is actually similar to VDV in a sense. They are particular players who need to be put in their favored position to suceed and need space to operate in. Remember that Kaka has had a hard time operating with another left winger/forward like Ronaldinho in both Milan and the Brazil NT. Pellegrini managed to squeeze the best from Riquelme for a few years which is an ENORMOUS feat because everything has to go through Roman and the team built around him in order for him to truly succeed. Its just his style and I think in a way, its also Kaka’s. However, Pellegrini never had to deal with two Roman’s. Thong Boys is going to have to become strictly a winger when Kaka plays IMO.’

I’m still waiting for RM to replace Cannavaro and hoping they keep Heinze. No Xabi Alonso for them = great news for us. If I were them, he would have been priority 1a. De la Red is going to have to step up or Gago has to take the next step he’s been waiting to take for 3 years now.

How happy are Sergio Ramos and Guti right now? That trio is going to be AWESOME (off the field that is). PLEASE become BFF’s. The Metro-Sexualness scale in Madrid is going to explode. I CANT wait to see this.

I actually think Man U may go for Benzema (they NEED a real 9 since Berbatov is not what they hoped for) and slot in Nani into Thong Boy’s slot and hope he sticks. There is no prime proven star center-midifelder on the market right now assuming Cesc and Alonso dont move (and I doubt those guys will got to Manu). Gourcuff just signed a new contract, Diego moved to Juventus, Xavi and Iniesta aint moving, Gerrard and Lampard wont go to Man U,… Hernanes is the only one that comes to mind and I hope and pray he wont go to Manu because hs is GOOD.

I’m with Hector here, I couldn’t be happier that Ronaldo is at Madrid. He is a perfect fit for that team. It will be nice to play against him at least 2 more times each year and watch Puyol own him :D

With such high profile signings with huge money, the pressure is on them to win titles. Nothing less will do especially the CL in Bernabeu next year.

Oh anyone thinks they’re going to be a threat in the CL? I think they’re going to be better in La Liga alright but CL? Nah maybe they’ll reach the quarter-finals this time but no more…

Eklavya, I think, EE will concentrate on the CL and leave la liga to us. I don’t see them winning both.

Hector, I was just telling a friend the same thing you said about Nani! I thought he could be a good replacement for CRon, he has the same type of skill, better close ball control, but not as powerful and accurate a shot. He will do well there, but they do need a real 9, maybe Huntelaar if EE gets rid of him.

Damn, I hope Madrid keeps on buying and not selling, in fact, nobody should buy their rejects unless they are considerably less than fair market value. They should buy Ribery, Ibrahimovic, Villa and Benzema. Add Kaka, CRon,RVN,Robben,Huntelaar,RVV,Higuain. Nothing will give me more satisfaction than watching $200+mil sitting on the bench, and the whole team eventually imploding. That will be sweet. Especially when Iniesta and Xavi show them that it doesn’t matter how much this guys cost, it just makes it simpler to run circles around them collectively than individually.

I think Man U is going to get Luis Antonio Valencia to play in thong boys position. Let’s see how that works out. And btw I think they are going to shoot higher than Huntelaar as their number 9 with that ridiculous money they are gonna get.

Getting Hectorized is when you write a long comment just as Kevin or Isaiah put up a new post. Nobody besides them can put up a new post so no, you didn’t Hectorize anyone, Mher.

Madrid has splashed an astronomical amount of money for CRon. It’s pretty much a done deal now that ManU has accepted the offer. Unless Chelsea comes a-knocking, but I highly doubt he’d go there.

The real question is – can Kaka get Thong Boy to wear an “I BELONG TO JESUS” shirt? Yes! But only if it’s bedazzled.

Anyway, I have no idea what the hell they’re doing over at EE headquarters, but I’m gonna enjoy watching Crissy get owned by Puyol and Pique. [And I won't lie, this is excellent news for Liverpool.]

hi,i love to see Eto’o try an English club especially Liverpool or Man united since its good that he experiences another league while he is still in top form.
I wish him the best for next season and no injuries in JESUS name.
