Malaria No More Pictures and comments
By: Isaiah | August 7th, 2008Here are some pictures of the Malaria No More event on Tuesday, August 5 at Chelsea Riverside Park in Manhattan. I hope you enjoy them and the unique view they offer into what it is that ultra elite athletes do when they’re surrounded by small children and people taking their picture.
I reduced the file sizes a little bit and then on this page I scaled them down even further, but I left a direct link at the bottom of each picture so you can just click on that and see the larger image. They’re on photobucket, so some of you may not be able to see them from work (for instance, my company has photobucket blocked).
First, Bojan muggin’:

Samu and Abidal vs. Bojan and Pique ended with a 0-0 draw, surprisingly enough.

This kid is about to stuff Rafa Marquez and earn himself MVP of the tournament. Yup, that’s right. Kid was sweet.

Pique was the only one who really joked around a lot; the kid he’s talking to tackled him from behind during the game and Pique rolled in what turned out to be mock agony, but which caused a lot of breaths to be held.

Rafa, easily the most popular player on the team here in New York, waves to the crowd and talks about how malaria sucks. It sure does, Rafa, it sure does.

Puyol and Guardiola. Whoa. Cool. And man, that Puyol guy has a lot of hair.

During the final, the team and coaches sat against the wall and laughed with each other about Valdes and Pinto having made it that far. No shit, they really did. But they lost to Hleb and Marquez. Rigged, I tell ya! Rigged! And then the team was bundled out the door immediately at the whistle. No autographs, no glad-handing, no nothing’. Laaaame.

I’d like to see more of these sorts of events and more teams getting involved in them. And hopefully from here on out, such events are not as sloppily organized. Still, very fun to see them from this close.

I think Pique’s English might be better than others due to his stay at United for 4 years!
