Marc Crosas: We hardly knew ye…
By: Isaiah | August 14th, 2008
Our youth system is still in demand, it would seem. After Gio Dos Santos made the big move to Tottenham, you knew that, but now it’s been reconfirmed by Celtic’s signing of youth product Marc Crosas. The deal is worth some €500,000, plus another €900,000 depending on appearances and results. The deal also includes the potential for a buy-back in another two years, at the end of the 2009-2010 season; that figure is rumored to be around €2m, which would, in the best case scenario, cost Barcelona €600,000 to get their own player back.
While he was certainly not an instrumental member of the squad, Crosas has been viewed as an up-and-coming prospect for quite some time. His loan stint at Olympique Lyonnais seemed to be going fairly well (10 appearances), but he apparently didn’t live up to the standards either the French club or FCB set for their players.
So we have a chance to buy back a player who made approximately 1 appearance for us in the Champions League and none in the league. That’s not good numbers for a player a lot of us saw as the potential future of the midfield, the possible replacement for Xavi in a few more years. I always thought he looked good when he got minutes in Copa, preseason, and Copa Catalunya games, but he was never the obviously dominate player that Xavi can be so he has been effectively farmed out to Celtic in an attempt to get him some first team action and to grow him a bit more. His flair should go a long way in the SPL, but I just don’t see him maturing enough to warrant being signed back. I hope he does, of course, because I wish nothing but the best for our youth products, but for some reason I’m rather pessimistic about his chances. I’m not even sure why; perhaps it’s the physical nature of the SPL…He’s 5′7″ after all…cause those are the players we create in our youth system, if you hadn’t noticed.
So, fare thee well, young Crosas. May your season in Hoops be fruitful.

I think he’s shown in his few first-team appearances that he works hard and has pretty good technique. But that’s all.

I think the only tall player we have produced is Pique, but he left while he was part of the youth set-up, so does he count?

Well, if you’ve been to Catalunya, you’ll see that tall people in general are in short supply

Pretty average for our standards and with Xavi and Iniesta already at the club and with Thiago,Iago behind him, there is really no need to keep a player like him at the club.
