Motta to Atletico

By: Isaiah | August 30th, 2007

Not all of the details are in and nothing official has been announced, but apparently Motta is going to Atletico Madrid for 2million euros. Maybe his goal in last night’s Gamper allowed this to happen, I don’t know, but it’s a good thing, in the end. 2million is relatively little compared to what Barcelona is losing, however, and hardly seems worth it. Imagine if Toure gets injured, who will replace him as a defensive midfielder?

I support the move, but only because I believe Deco, Xavi, and Iniesta can steamroll most midfields in La Liga. As for the CL and the top 4 or 5 teams in La Liga, different story, but it remains to be seen if the team will truly be an attacking force with Eto’o out.

I think letting Motta go will help the squad, he’s definitely surplus with Rafa Marquez and Edmilson (when he comes back) in that position.

I also am not too worried about Eto’o going down, Dos Santos has been the one player that isn’t afraid to make crazy runs in attack this whole pre-season. Eto’o and Ronaldinho are too comfortable making plays and waiting for the perfect passes to dribble at opposing defenders and it really showed against Santander this weekend.

Don’t forget that we have Henry and even Bojan who can play that Center Forward role in the meantime.

    VISCA BARCA!!!

Motta is a solid footballer, but in my eyes would not break into the first 11. So i think it was good to offload him, but, my question is, with all of the people we are letting walk out the door for 2 million here, 3 million there, when will Barca go out and buy the reinforcements they need to compete with now extremely deeep squads like Atletico, Real, and Sevilla. Not to mention the tough Champions League teams.

Gio and Bojan look very very promising, but would I start them in a Champions League match….??? Not too sure

Omar, I don’t buy into the over-spending as much as some and I still believe that Henry was a superfluous purchase. While it’s nice to have a superstar striker at a moment like this, when Eto’o is injured, that doesn’t mean that we should have spent that money on a large ego (I’m sure it was a marketing decision more than it was a footballing one)*. What it does mean is Barcelona has the ability to gel as a unit and play some awesome games, putting together better moves than anyone else, simply because teams like ManU and Liverpool have too huge of squads. Look at what Sevilla is capable of doing with worse players, for one. Real hasn’t proven anything to me yet, so there’s no reason to assume they’re going to be better than last year, when they also have great players all over the field and ended up barely winning the league. Barcelona have nothing to worry about, especially when Puyol and Edmilson come back. Not that I like Edmilson, but he is handy to have around.

*Anyone else who has also seen this Gillette ad wonder what Barca’s front office thinks of Henry appear in an Arsenal uniform? They’re probably pissed.

While I think that this summer was the right time for Motta to move on, selling him for a couple of million euro was not good business. I have been a fan of his for years, from the time that he was a younster who Milan were trying to poach him and through his numerous injuries. But he has been a good player and still could turn out to be a very good player. Being forced to sell him for buttons when they should have got 3 or 4 million early in the season. I would rather have him in the squad than Ezquerro. Good luck to him though
