‘Nastic 1 – 5 Barcelona: Ending the season with style

By: Isaiah | June 18th, 2007

First, congratulations to Real Madrid for winning the league. Certainly the better team during the last third of the season, the merengues, as always, left it late, but came away with all 3 points against a plucky Mallorca side whose finishing let Barcelona down in a game that was so thoroughly dominated by Madrid that there was never really much chance of Barça squeaking by with the title.

The Nastic game was a pretty solid testament to the fact that Barcelona are a solid attacking side and also that Gimnastic de Tarragona was a crap side. 1-5. Wow. They were operating on all cylinders, apparently. And I say apparently because GolTV was showing the Madrid match, which was fine because Barcelona was having themselves a rompfest and it was better to at least see the end coming rather than believe Mallorca was going to win when they were up 0-1. Not that they shouldn’t have scored 3 on those sweeping counter attack moves that showed off Cannavaro’s surprising lack of pace. So much for the 3million euros, I guess.

Puyol scored his first and only goal of the season by somehow appearing in the box and pushing the ball into the net to make it 0-1. It would have more than made up for his inability to stay with Tamudo during the final minute last week had Madrid not had a certain Robinho being brilliant along their left wing. Sigh. Messi scored twice, Ronaldinho drove in a brilliant free kick, and Zambrotta netted in second half injury time to take the lead back to 4 after ‘Nastic pulled one back through Tobias Grahn. The final result was never in doubt, but the players really pulled together for this game rather than rolling over and letting Madrid completely off the hook.

So it was a “disappointing” year in that the season started off with the possibility of winning 6 major trophies, but only the seventh potential trophy, the Copa Catalunya, made its way to the Camp Nou. There have been worse years, I suppose, but it’s hard to lose the league like that. Giving away trophies to your arch rival never feels good, but this one feels all the worse because we were right there, right on the cusp, and yet came away with nothing. Naturally, I’m inclined to believe Barcelona are the rightful owners of this year’s trophy because of goal differential (+19 over Real Madrid), but it was the inability to score at the Bernabeu or defend at the death that cost Barça the title.

Before I discuss the season as a whole in another post (with statistics galore), I’d just like to say that the season was not a failure. Disappointing perhaps, but in a year that we put 6 into the Vicente Calderon’s net, found ourselves a new “Messiah,” and came in second in a title chase that went down to the very last minutes (and really, if you think of Jornada 37 as the last week of the season, which it really was, then it was literally the last few seconds), the team played hard and well and overcame a lot of issues like injuries and egos in order to survive the Group of Death in the Champions League and very nearly take out finalists Liverpool in the round of 16 as well as get to the semis of the Copa del Rey and the finals of the FIFA Club World Cup. And next year there is Bojan and Giovanni Dos Santos to watch, which should be a distinct pleasure.

No doubt we will make some serious off-season changes, but we were not a bad team. It is merely that Madrid gelled at the right moment and we fell asleep at the wheel for a grand total of 20 seconds. The Real Betis and Espanyol moments of smack-yourself-on-the-forehead ineptitude were suggestive a wider problem in defense, but that should be remedied with a key addition such as Chivu. Puyol is still great, Thuram is solid, but Zambrotta has failed to be as dominate as he could be and Gio, Oleguer, Belletti, and Marquez haven’t had good seasons. Many critics suggest that Oleguer is having a perfectly good year, it’s just that he sucks. With Abidal, Chivu, and Yaya Toure all supposedly on their way the defense should be even better. After all, this year’s defense, as maligned as it was, was tied with Getafe for fewest goals allowed (33) while the offense blew away the competition with 78 goals, 12 more than 2nd place Real Madrid.*

*Ruud van Nistelrooy scored more than 1/3 of their goals (25). That’s crazy, especially if you consider the fact that Raul scored 7 and he was next on the tally. Ronaldinho hit 21 while Messi dropped in 14, Eto’o 11, and Iniesta of all people 6.

If falling asleep at the wrong time (Week 37) was Barca’s reason for not winning the title, then you may want to send a memo to the club to stay away from Christian.

I like Chivu, he is a phenomenal athlete and can be a great defender, but he disappears at times and can make horrible blunders when it matters most. He was largely responsible for Roma’s collapse at Old Trafford.

Sounds like he would fit in perfectly.

Our biggest problem is none of those links you listed are DMs (Yaya Toure is too offensive orientated) and I’d rather not get stuck with Edmilson and Motta as our two choices for another year. If we knew Marquez would go back to being the player he was last season and in the WC then we’d be in a lot better shape, but he was horrifying this year. I hope we at least make an offer for Zaragoza’s Zapater, he’d be perfect. And it looks like we aren’t going to get Abidal, since Lyon is being irrational. Hopefully there is a backup plan because I will cry if Belletti, Oleguer, or Sylvinho is a starter next season.

I’m amazed you are being so optimistic, props to you. We were close, but that only makes this more painful to me, and it’s clear we have some serious problems we must deal with before they get worse.

You’re right, Nolan, that we need a DM more than anything. And that I’m being optimistic. Perhaps overly so, but I can never say that 2nd place is bad. I just wish, if we had to be 2nd, that it were Sevilla in front of us. Damn.

    I hate Real Madrid.

I have seen some videos of Bojan and Giovanni Dos Santos on youtube. Videos were simply awesome. They seem to posses great individual skills. Lets see how effective they are playing for the team.

    A couple of interesting statistics:

    1. Only two clubs in Europe got more goals than us — Inter and Man U — and they didn’t outscore us by much.

    2. Only three clubs in Europe allowed less goals than us — the top three in England — and even then, the difference was not much.

And yet, the critics keep saying Barca didn’t defend well. As for scoring, if we’re third in Europe even though our best striker was out of commission for a big part of the season, that’s not so bad, is it?

On the whole, I don’t think we played much worse than last year. It’s just that our expectations were raised last year, and so we were more likely to be disappointed. The key difference is that we didn’t play well when it mattered most, against the big teams. That cost us everything.

A big ol’ ‘word’ to everything Rupert said. You’re right, Isaiah, there’s no need to get that pessimistic.

And I’d like to agree with everyone else about our need for decent DMs. This from the official website: “A left back, a centre back, one or two midfielders and one or two forwards are the kind of players that Txiki and Rijkaard are looking to add to a group that will definitely continue to feature both Ronaldinho and Samuel Eto’o.”

    Sounds about right to me.

I’m just afraid we’re going to get into a revolving-door pattern like R.Madrid did. It’s not like we came in 10th. Or even 5th. We were 2nd and tied on points and obviously the better team over the course of the season (goal differential, goals allowed, goals scored, fewest losses) so why are we freaking out and crying like huge babies and acting as if our team turned in such an awful performance.

Does no one realize what it took for Real Madrid to TIE us in points? They had to win what, 9 of their last 12? They had to come back from behind something like 8,000 times. And we tanked? Sinking ship, my ass. Yeah, we made mistakes (2 crucial ones) and that’s what cost us the title, but don’t forget that not only are we going to contend next year, we contended THIS year. And we won the previous 2 titles. So for the love of Messi, let’s not get overly crazy in the transfer market. We don’t need Henry, we don’t need 400 defenders. We need a DM.

One DM, please. Pay a reasonable amount for him and don’t get nutso. A world class left back would be nice, but is not as essential as a DM. As for offense, we’ve got our youth academy for those positions. And if you don’t believe me, well, wait for the Gio and Bojan Show to start.

I just hope the management don’t go crazy for Henry or someone flashy like that and neglect the signing of a DM, which as you said is what we need in the first place. (Like how Real kept signing strikers when they needed more defenders.)
