News: Deco out for three weeks; Rijkaard wants to stay
By: Isaiah | March 19th, 2007
Barcelona will be without Deco for at least three weeks as he recovers from surgery on the middle finger of his right hand. The midfielder injured it during a tackle on Saturday, a tackle for which he earned a yellow card.
This is sobering news as Deco just returned from suspension and the blaugrana certainly weren’t quite as good without him during that time. He could return in time for the tricky away match at Zaragoza, which would be nice. It’s like a handball player being sidelined with a foot injury, only a little crazier. I suppose the injury will leave him more time for another trip to London, though who in their right mind would ever cheat on this? (SFW)
The good news coming from Nou Camp is that Rijkaard says he’d like to stay in Barcelona (Spanish):
“El mundo del fútbol funciona asÃ, siempre hay rumores, siempre hay gente que opina sobre ti, pero mi situación no ha cambiado. Me siento orgulloso de trabajar aquÃ, tengo ganas de seguir haciéndolo.”
Translation:
“The footballing world works like that, there are always rumors, always people who have opinions about you, but my situation hasn’t changed. I am proud to work here [FC Barcelona], I want to keep doing it [working for FC Barcelona].”
Rijkaard does, however, temper his statement by adding that his continued presence at the club isn’t just dependent on him: others must want him to stay. Understandable and I hope that any contract talks that might be going on or begin at the end of the season allow for reasonable discussion. Barcelona should try to keep Rijkaard, but Rijkaard shouldn’t try to hold them over the coals either (naturally I understand if he does, since they’re a rich club and he’ll want more money than they offer him, but if everyone can be sensible about the whole thing, there’s no reason why both can’t come to terms fairly quickly).

At least Deco won’t actually miss any games, since he’s suspended for the Depor game anyway. (Honestly, though, even I think his wife is hot. You’re not going to convince me that London hookers are better looking.)
Ahem. I don’t think Rijkaard is the kind to fuss too much over money - this is the guy who accepted a cut-price salary to come and coach Barca in the first place. Reading between the lines, I think he’s concerned with not outstaying his welcome, unlike, say, Van Gaal.
