News of the Day: Alex Song to Barça… Yay? I Mean, Why?By: Ade C. | August 18th, 2012
With a lot less drama than the latest Arsenal-to-Barça signings (because everyone’s busy throwing rotten tomatoes at Van Persie, I suppose), it’s been confirmed today that Barça have signed Cameroon midfielder Alex Song for the next 5 seasons. The fee is of 19 million euros, and he will have a 80-million buy-out clause. He will have his medical and sign his contract on Monday, and presumably be presented to the blaugrana faithful at the Gamper match.
Why Song, though? What makes him the player Barça needs to strengthen this squad? I’m aware that trolling Arsenal is a traditional Catalan pastime by now, but couldn’t Zubizarreta and Rosell send Wenger an Instagram photo with their tequila-sunrise Cesc shirts and leave it at that? Why spend so much money on a player who doesn’t seem to fit the Barça mould (in terms of attitude, mostly)? Of course, I’m aware that all my complaints might come to nothing if Tito pulls a Mascherano and converts Song into the most reliable right-back that ever right-backed, or something like that, but I’m not holding my breath…
Ok, OK… I do suppose Busquets needs a bit of competition and someone who can step in his place since Keita left, Masche is busy being an awesome CB, and while JDS bulks up a little (I can’t be the only one who thinks he just looks too dainty for a DM). Song can do all that, and look great on the bench too! Further souring our relationship with the Arsenal fans is just a bonus!
In any case, welcome, Alex! May you and your gloriously entertaining head of hair have some splendid years at Barcelona!
