Only one piece left, a.k.a. “Helloooo, Number 9!”

By: Kevin | July 19th, 2008

Whither thou goest, Samu? It’s almost as if, which is why I chose this picture, he seems to be saying “I’m going over there, away from here.”

This Eto’o situation is huge, and is weighing on the club and dividing the cules. So let’s look at what we know:

Eto’o has been told by the team that he is surplus to requirements, as they say so elegantly in England, and can seek a new home. We’ve slapped a very fair 30 million Euro price tag on the Cameroonian goal machine.

Guardiola is on record as saying he wants a big, strong central striker.

We have received no serious bids for Eto’o. As in zero. We’ve received many overtures, there have been rumors, but as far as real offers….none.

And what the hell about that trip to Uzbekistan?

Prima facie, we HAVE to sell him this year, or risk getting hosed next season, a la Dos Santos, right? Eto’o is in the next-to-last year of his contract, which leaves us with not many options. Keep him, and he becomes really cheap next season, as clubs will just wait for him on a free transfer.

But as usual with players, there are complications. Eto’o doesn’t seem all that interested in leaving, and will meet in-person with team officials today (probably Txiki and Guardiola) to determine where he stands. So by Monday we should know if he’s staying or not. If he’s practicing with the side and grinning, reckon on him staying.

The initial news that he could leave was greeted with a yawn, basically, as Eto’o said I’m on holiday, I’ll deal with that stuff when I get back. Well, Samu, you’re back. So deal with it.

That Uzbek thing just will not go away. It would, really, be the best move for us and for him. He needs to be revived. Right now, the world knows that he is unwanted by us. So he goes to Uzbekistan, scores about a million goals then returns to Europe on free transfer, since you know he’s going to sign a contract with no transfer fee. He gets a boatload of money, a rumored 50 million Euros for an easy season of work. We get his asking price, which the Uzbeks are more than willing to meet, and everybody’s happy.

The real question, however, is are we crazy??!! Samuel Eto’o has been a Liga goal machine, with a staggering goals to appearances ratio. Almost 90 goals in 136 games for us? Damn! He rolls up in the parking lot and the ball is flying into the net. So what’s the deal, and what do the bosses know that we don’t?

(Ding! It’s Speculation Time!)

He can’t score goals in Champions League play unless backed by the very serious firepower of R10, Messi and Deco. Two of the three are gone, and Eto’o’s 1 goal in 6 appearances last season speaks for itself. If you build a squad to win Europe, the Liga probably goes without saying. The reverse is rarely true, however. Look at the Evil Empire the last two seasons.

And it would seem that the only two real possibilities for Eto’o, given his demands of a big club and Champions League play, are Inter and Chelsea. Inter has only signed Mancini this summer, but Mourinho has a great, big war chest with which to play. But they have one hell of a striker in Zlatan Ibrahimovic. They also have Cruz, and the suddenly revived Adriano. Nobody has been mentioned as being for sale, which means Eto’o is pretty unlikely for Inter, despite rumor-mongering.

Chelsea always has money to splash, and are looking to minimise the leverage that Drogba has by essentially being their only striker worth a damn. They have The Great Sulk, Nicolas Anelka, and the has-been, Shevchenko. So Eto’o would seem a nice move for them, right? Sure. But at present, they’re busy trying to keep on Frank Lampard down on the farm.

Liverpool has been mentioned as a possible suitor, but they already have Kuyt and Torres, and are looking to grab Robbie Keene. Eto’o comes up as a possibility if Keene doesn’t work out.

This means that Eto’o is unsettled, but so are we. We want him gone, both for the money and the closure. Psychologically, this would be Messi’s team through and through, with Guardiola as the steward. Two years. Make it happen or hit the bricks with Laporta.

So what if Eto’o is sold? Let’s look at the possible replacements.

Adebayor, the best option for Guardiola’s requirements, seems to be out of the frame, though I suspect if we sold Eto’o, he would be back in, as we’d have 30 mil or so to play with. Arsenal, for some reason, are being exceptionally difficult with that transfer as regards us, which doesn’t make sense after our gift of a Fabregas egg to them. But Adebayor’s real number, right now, would be about the same as Eto’o, in the 30 million range.

Trezeguet is on the rumor mill again, with the buzz that he recently told Henry that overtures, however preliminary, have been made, despite the “I’m staying put and Juve isn’t selling me” stuff. This doesn’t make me all that giddy. He’s a great in the box striker, but with our offense, you want your striker to, at times, be able to take a pass outside the box and make something happen.

It’s been quiet on the Huntelaar front and Berbatov, last we heard, is still for Man U.

And then there’s that Drogba speculation. He wants out of Chelsea, but they don’t have to sell him as he has three years left on his contract. Their desperation time will be next year.

There were rumors of an Eto’o for Drogba swap, which were laughed at by the London side. Can’t blame them, really. Drogba is almost 6′3″ tall, and nabbed 6 goals in 11 Champions League appearances last season. But he’s 30 years old, has been showing signs of fragility of late, and is quite the hothead.

So that’s where things stand. We will know more after the weekend, but it’s safe to say that at present, this is the most important thing on the agenda. Eto’o has to go, or be signed to an extension. If he stays, I’m not all that geeked about our Champions League chances, absent an on-form Ronaldinho and Deco. But stranger things have happened.

And now, we wait.

i agree with jake, if he were not catalan he would have been gone 4 sure. the problem with keepers is that once you have one you really need to stick with the same one all year unless they really suck…

One thing Abidal may be stronger and faster than Sylvinho but I think the Brazilian out-performed him last year I hated it when Rijkard kept starting Abidal over Sylvinho. I know Abidal is better than he showed but sylvinho is not “manco”. It seems Guardiola cares little to nothing about who played last year I hope sylvinho starts…. If he can stay healthy.

I know we shouldn’t judge players based on YouTube videos but when I see Arshavin there I can’t help but cry a little. We’ve got to get him. He seems a bit, do I dare say it, Ronaldinhoesk?

Well, I would say that Henry didn’t forget how to play, as much as he had to learn to play a new position. If Guardiola follows through on his promises and makes Henry a for-real striker rather than a left-winger, we’ll see that he can play just fine.

The rumor mill is that our valuation and Eto’o’s crazy wage demands are what are souring the deal. That dyspeptic heel-dragger, when asked by Arsenal about terms, wanted 10 million Euros per year! He came down to 8.5 for Milan. Inter heard about it and said “Um….we’re gonna pass on that. We already have guys who can’t score goals in Champions League.” Spurs approached, but decided that 150K per week for a striker that was an unknown quantity in the Premiership wasn’t all that great a deal.

To boot, we are saying that the bidding starts at 30 million?

I don’t get it. We really wanted Ronaldinho gone, and we priced him to move. If we really want Eto’o gone, price him the same way. Let’s get him out of here. I admit to not understanding the logic of that one. I know that we’re being respectful by not dealing him to a team he doesn’t want, but it seems absurd that a player can in effect make himself a fixture in a locker room by being a nit.

Oh. We offered Gudjohnsen to PSG and they said “We’ll get back to you on that one.” I think they’re still waiting by the phone. And the Icelandic Monument said that before, it was clear that he was unwanted, but after a recent talk with Guardiola, it wasn’t so clear any longer.

Right. And the comments of the team in the person of Txiki, and doing everything short of driving him to southern France and putting him for sale in a local marche, aren’t clear enough.

    Man, players and their egos.

Worse, they scuttle plans for those roster spots. If Gudjohnsen stays, he won’t see the light of day in a first-division match. I’m betting Eto’o rides the pines a lot, too, though they will probably play him to put him in the shop window, in the hopes of a January sale. If we play him in Champions League play, we’re stuck with him, as the only teams that will be able to splash the kind of cash necessary will most likely be in Champions League, and unable to take a player who has already played for another side in that tournament.

    Sheesh….

He says ‘I remain with the illusion of one day being able to say goodbye from the Camp Nou.’ :(

“Listen to me, all of you! You will put pressure on every throw in! Always! From today until the last day!”

This quote, from Guardiola, comes courtesy of Pep’s Most Excellent Site (its official name in my mind now).

    http://fcbtransfers.blogspot.com/2008/07/quote-of-day.html

He apparently stopped a session because the guys were slacking off a little bit. This is what I’m talking about. Two a days, hard work, and now this? Tear it up, Pep. Tear it ALL up.

First exhibition is tomorrow, and we get them in Soldier Field next weekend. Numbers will come soon, probably this week. Messi will be the new number 10, and other folks will move around. Krkic will have to get a different number, since he’s now first-team.

Ronaldinho had his chance to say goodbye from the Camp Nou, at the last home match of the season. He didn’t take it, choosing to do whatever he was doing at the time. The letter is nice, and it’s great public relations. But I think he’s as happy to have us in his rear view mirror as we are to have him in our rear view mirror.

The site also said that, Zenit had finally lowered their price (to 20 million) and was waiting for barca to put their bid but barca hasnt done anything yet apart from their earlier bid of 15 million. It also said that Barca is Arshavin’s favorite club. Dunno if all of this is true, it seems to good to be true…

Kxevin, come on. At least give him credit for a dignified exit. How easy would it have been to diss Barca and make the point that he wasn’t played when he was available so hell mend them? This was the best player in the world for two seasons and asked ( for whatever reason) to come off for the monument or worse, to warm the bench while a misfiring Henry and two kids took his place and the team went to hell in a handcart. If memory serves me right he was also at the last home game so it would have been easy for the club to arrange a farewell since they seemed surer than him that he would be going.

Good PR or not it was a classy way to say goodbye ( something he didn’t have to do ) and he deserves better than some of the cheap shots which have come his way in some of the posts. We won’t see his like again I fear.

Definitely the last comment on R10 from me. Let’s move on.

Oh, ‘Dinho knew he was leaving, and he knew it was eventually going to be for Milan. We were hearing the reports everywhere that he was speaking Italian in the locker room, laughing as he said “ciao” to teammates.

I respect the man, I respect what he did for the side. Much love to R10. But don’t hand us BS about stuff. As I said, it’s a very nice PR move. And I’m sure if we ever wind up in a two-legged tie against AC Milan, the home leg will find the fans appreciative at the outset.

But he knew, at the time of its occurrence, that that last home match was the last time he was going to get foot in the “home” locker room of the Nou Camp.

Hey, in the “hilarious rumor” mill, Calderon wants Eto’o! :D No word about approved or unapproved chants that the striker would be allowed to utter.

Perhaps Blather Blatter will now accuse Barca of treating Leo like a “slave”?

Jokes aside, if the kid wants to go, and he isn’t carrying any injuries, the club should not stand in his way. I don’t like it when national teams call up players for some egregious, cash-generating friendly. But the Olympics are another story. Go, Leo!

    I knew I couldn’t resist :)

You can’t leave unless a team is prepared to pay for you. R10 had no control over that. The only people who can decide if he plays for Milan are Milan. I agree he probably knew that was what he wanted. As it was, though, he had to sweeten the deal by waiving his cut. Whether he knew or not isn’t the point, though. The club could have offered him the chance to say goodbye if they had wanted - even if he wasn’t fit. Leaving like this after what he has done for the club isn’t right.

I don’t see why he needs good PR for Barca when he plays for Milan, so how is choosing to be nice about a former club BS? The natural tendency would be to exact revenge. Wouldn’t have been hard given the way the rest had played without him. We could draw up a list of those who’ve gone down that road.

I actually agree with Jim (for the first time)…although what Ronnie did in the last year was bad, he was a class apart overall, and we should not buzz him off for what he did recently.. He is trying to be as gentlemanly about it as one can given the circumstances and we should respect it even if we don’t agree fully (….he could have done much worse things…say even trying to go to Madrid..but he did not)

You do PR because you never want to burn bridges, particularly with a club such as Barcelona. Coaching? Who knows. Some Pele or Cruyff-like role? Who knows. I admire the move. It’s always more difficult to be a grownup. And the good PR also polishes the R10 apple to a more lustrous glow.

Make no mistake. I’m not knocking him for the move. I’m just calling it what I think it is. The good thoughts are almost certainly sincere. But it’s still really good PR that can only enhance the R10 brand.

And I knew you couldn’t resist either, Jim. :D

looks like Spurs are willing to sell Berbatov off for 30 million euros for us but 38 million for Utd….A little expensive but I think this deal is worth considering ..if you are thinking of the height diff …Ade is 6′3″ while berbatov is 6′2″ ….not much of a difference and I know for sure Berbatov is not only a better player in air but overall too….
