Preview: Atleti – Barça, Sunday 1pmEST GolTV
By: Isaiah | February 27th, 2009
Another day, another game, it seems. My preview-producing fingers have been quite busy this season, as we go from league to cup to Champions League and back to regular domestic league with a brutal quickness that suggests, were my fingers players, that fatigue would rapidly take over. But, fortunately for all involved, my fingers are merely instruments of preview creation and don’t have to make long runs into the box to collect whipped crosses from Dani Alves.
What’s even more fortunate for you than my fingers not being in the starting lineup at the Calderon, dear cule, is that Iniesta could very possibly be back with the team. He has begun training with the squad again and even though I don’t expect him to take part, he might be able to sub on. We’ll find out when the squad list is released tomorrow, but he was seen training with the full squad this morning, so hopefully he’ll be available. Of course, if it means he’s not 100% healthy, then he should sit out.
Gabi Milito is also back and 100% fit, apparently. So that’s rocknroll or at least some form of jazz. I don’t think we’ll see him start against Atleti, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him subbed on at some point late in the 2nd in order to get him some match time and, perhaps, prepare him for a start against Mallorca in the Copa. Regardless, he’s back and we have another CB to swap in and out, which can’t be a bad thing.
But on to Atleti, our opponents this week.
24 games in, 14 to go. 72 possible points gone, 42 to go. Atleti sit in 7th place, 3 points below Malaga and Valencia, who are battling it out for UEFA and CL spots. Atleti is also tied with Depor in terms of points. They, Atleti, have 36 points (50% of those possible) out of their first 24 games with an overall record of 10W-6D-8L (48GF, 35GA). That’s 1.50pts per game, with 2.00GF and 1.46GA over average. They’ve scored the 3rd most number of overall goals in the league (behind only Barça and RM) but have allowed the 9th most (35, tied with Valencia and Malaga, oddly enough). Perhaps an interesting anecdote is that had Atleti drawn 0-0 with Barça in the Camp Nou, they would have the 3rd best defensive record in the league behind only Barça and Racing. But, alas, they were spanked.
However, let’s compare home and away stats.
PPG = pts per game; GFpG = GF per game; GApG = GA per game
Atleti home: 6W-1D-4L (25GF, 11GA); 1.75PPG, 2.27GFpG, 1.00GApG
Barça away: 9W-2D-1L (27GF, 10GA); 2.55PPG, 2.45GFpG, 0.91GApG
Statistically, Atleti is one of the better home teams, with only 3 teams having scored more goals and only 2 teams having allowed fewer. It’s just that in both cases, Barça is one of those teams. However, you can never underestimate them simply because of statistics. They’re going to looking to get back on their feet in La Liga, having won just once in their last 8 — at Recre Huelva 0-3 in the first match under Abel Resino. Speaking of which, their current league record under Resino is 1-1-1. 4 points from 3 matches isn’t going to make the rojiblanco faithful.
According to wikipedia, that intrepid source of factual journalism, Resino loves to play his back line very high, to pressure the other team’s midfield. And gain an attacking advantage. That, to me, sounds like suicide against a quick and agile front line being provided for by one Xavi Hernandez Creus. I hear that guy can pass. And I hear that Barcelona has some quick forwards. However, it does suggest that Atleti might be particularly well-suited to maintaining the high pressure that is necessary to get Barcelona of kilter. Certainly Atleti has the talent, but they’ve been beaten by Barcelona 3 times already this year (once in the league, twice in the Copa) and I find it somewhat hard to imagine that they are in better shape than we are, having also played a tough CL game on Tuesday.
One reason that Resino might be having trouble getting things clicking at the Calderon (where, to be fair, he’s only had one game, a 1-1 draw against Getafe) is that he’s apparently warring with Kun Aguero, who doesn’t like something or other and Resino resents something else or something other or blah blah. Yeah, tabloids and their whole OMG we’re going to print nonsense thing, once again. But if there really is something going on in the locker room between Resino, Aguero, and other players, it could tear that side apart and make them function like a group starving wolverines around a carcass. Even though that analogy made no sense whatsoever, I’m leaving it there because it created one hell of a mental image for me. If the wheels come off their bus, I’d be quite happy for it to be against us so that we trot out 3-0 winners or something to that effect. I doubt it will happen, but the perennial choke-fest that is Atleti might as well come through for us now, eh?
As for Barcelona’s lineup against what will probably be a 4-5-1, I think there are a couple of things we can do to mix it up: Valdes, Alves, Puyol, Pique, Caceres, Yaya, Xavi, Hleb, Henry, Eto’o, Messi. That may not look like mixing it up, but I’m saying put Hleb in the Iniesta spot, and let him at least retain possession in a way that Keita was not capable of during the Lyon game. We’ll probably see Guddy in there instead of Hleb, and I can’t really blame Guardiola for that since I’ve called for Hleb’s head many a time, but I think we put Alex out there with a short leash and see what he can do for us. If Iniesta is healthy enough to play 90 minutes, I say we keep him on the bench until about the 60th, just to be safe, and then let him lose in place of Henry or Hleb (whoever is doing worse — imagine which one I think that will be…if you guess right, you win a cookie*) to see if we can’t grab another goal in the final 30. If Iniesta is not quite healthy enough to play a match — and I suspect he isn’t — then we can rotate Guddy into that deep-lying faux playmaker half-striker, half DM, 1/3 winger, 1/4 mathematician role that he’s, well, not exactly perfected, but had decent moments in.
Or, if things are going badly, which they won’t, but if they don’t (and they won’t), we can always throw on Bojan for Hleb and get some pizazz going on one of the wings. Regardless, we’re going to have to fight for this one and, if the Lyon game is any indication, the team is beginning to understand then fight-from-the-first-whistle mentality needed in this stretch of the year. If you let up for one minute, you’re doomed. Doomed, I say. If things are going exceedingly well, which they will, then we can throw on Busi instead of Hleb (if Hleb is having a magnificent game, then you can take Henry and shift Hleb up, I guess, I mean maybe) to shore up the defense a little bit and shut down any counters they might be able to bring against us.
The third sub is Gabi Milito on for…someone. Pique, probably, just cause the guy needs a rest and we can’t take Puyol out. Though maybe for Caceres and Puyol can swing over to the left to kill defend whoever is on their right wing at the moment (Aguero?). Until then, Caceres can certainly do an effective job against Aguero and Pique and Puyol can stop Forlan from doing any damage. Boom. Game over. I’m feeling more confident now than when I started this preview. Maybe that’s what these previews are really for.
Official prediction: 3-1 Baaaarcelona. Hot damn. Goals by Messi, Eto’o, and Henry. Let’s do it!
And, as always, check out the Where to Watch page if you need to find somewhere in your locale to watch the boys in blaugrana. I personally will be in Philly for this one and will try to post my viewing location to the blog in the match comments post that I hope to be able to put up on Sunday morning. Feel free to post the squad lineups and the starting lineups here, of course.
If you can only stream the game, check out rojadirecta.com to get your viewership on.

Hi,
We have had some games in wich we played awful, and the problem is the midfielders. Keita or Xavi hardly score goals, plus the other day Busquets played offensive midfielder and he was really bad. Keita or Busquets are not truly offensive players, they only pass the easy ball to someone else.
With Iniesta injured (the most offensive), Sergio Busquets should play where “la Yaya Toure” plays, so Yaya can go up and show his talent. He dribbles, he shoots, steals balls easily, and makes very good passes. Yaya always plays as the bodyguard, in the back, and never goes up with the play ’cause there’s nobody else behind him…. GUARDIOLA SHOULD BE SMARTER, WE NEED TO SCORE GOALS, NOT JUST PASS THE BALL TO THE NEXT GUY. You can put Guddy there or Hleb but never Keita or Busquets, they should play in the back. Yaya is my first pick, I love that guy, but Hleb or Guddy are supposedly fine.
Something else, I saw Liverpool’s game against Madrid and I loved how Liverpool played defense with Mascherano and Xavi Alonso, two guys in the back midfield. Barcelona and specially Pep Guardiola should try to play those hard games (when you can’t be scored against) with two in the back and the other offensive midlfielder more free. YAYA-BUSQUETS and XAVI up front. OR YAYA-XAVI with INIESTA up front. We should be able to change our tactic in order to surprise other teams, it’s almost the same tactic as 4 or 5 years ago with Rijkaard. We can still play the beloved 4-3-3 but in a different way, instead of 4 – (1-2) – 3 , 4 – (2-1) – 3
Long life to Rafa Benitez, I hope he never goes to Madrid.
Visca el Barça i Amunt Valencia.

Kyle, I’ll be at the Dark Horse for the game, wearing my orange away jersey or a blue Kansas Jayhawks hoodie and hanging with commenter JeffP. Rocknroll.

Also, I forgot about Pique being out. Dammit. So my lineup is this:
Valdes, Alves, Marquez, Puyol, Caceres, The Yaya, Xavi, Hleb, Henry, Eto’o, Messi.
So that’s just not what’s going to happen and we all know it.

Looks like Espanyol is actually trying to win.. but they suck so they can’t get it done.
Most of their passing has been disastrous.Posted from

My dream, re: the EE vs Espanyol match, is for a giant pit to open up and swallow both sides into the bowels of hell. Every season, twice per season, I have this wish, and every year it goes unsated.
Hell of a save by Palop late in the Sevilla/Bilbao match, even if the striker choked a bit.

weird, the espanyol madrid match went off air. they just said, vaguely, sorry we cant cover the game anymore, in like th 42nd minute. whatever problems they have better not affect the barca match.

Kevin, the powers that be offer this up to you: http://www.sport.es/vivo/recursos/fotos/foto_346/foto_346299_CAS.jpg
A rough and hasty translation:
Laporta: Unfortunately, the mathematical possibilities that that game at Montjuic will end in both teams losing is zero…it’s rigged! it’s rigged!

*Sigh* 0-1 to madrid. There’s always meteorites.

2-0, that’s pure effectiveness by Real. Espanyol plays way better than they did last week against us but will lose.
In Germany, they say you have to win such matches to become the Champion…

A very worrying trend is continuing in Madrid. They are playing terrible and winning yet again. Next week they have Atletico who always crumble against them so there is an awful lot of pressure on us to make it 7 points again.
Not to be pessimistic but if we lose tomorrow night I fear for our season on a domestic level.Posted from

I didn’t see Atletico’s squad list so here it is…
Coupet, Leo Franco
Seitaridis, Antonio López, Heitinga, Ujfalusi, Pablo
Raúl García, Maxi Rodríguez, Assunção, Éver Banega, Maniche, de las Cuevas, Simão, Nacho Camacho.
Forlán, Kun & Sinama-PongolleFor those who are not familiar, they are without two important defenders, Pernia (LB) and Perea (CB). Luis Garcia (Ex-Barca & Liverpool) is out injured.
Probable Starting XI
Coupet, Seitaridis, Heitinga, Ujfalusi, A.Lopez, Maxi, Maniche, Assuncao, Simao, Forlan & Kun.
Although don’t be too surprised to see a 4-5-1.
Ujfalusi & Heitinga had the worst games of their lives against us last time so a repeat performance would be welcomed. My prediction 2-1 with goals from Pique/Marquez and Eto’o

We owe Atleti a good beating. Last season when we lost there 4-2 i think we were like 2 points back of madrid. that was a big set back. The boys know we must win now after madrid’s victory today. I predict a 3-1 win for us.And it would be nice to score 1st.

As I said in the Lyon review, the two things that have of late been absent for us are early goals, and lack of defensive errors. We’ll see about tomorrow.
Both Espanyol goals were errors, Yaya’s confusion and Valdes’ errant clearance, and the Lyon goal was keeper error. These were mistakes that weren’t occurring during the run. Mistake-free football is critical, which goes without saying, right?
I’m pretty sure that Guardiola will have them about as ready to play as can be, but this is going to be a tough match. Atleti’s backs are against the wall, even more than ours. Win this one, and there’s a pretty easy (on paper) Liga stretch as the reward.
Plus there will be the derby the following week for the EE.
Oh, Arshavin looked good, but I can see why we didn’t want to break the bank for him. He looked a lot like a Xavi/Iniesta combo today in Arsenal’s 0-0 draw. I can see Guardiola thinking, “Do we really need to break the bank for another quick, slick with the ball midfielder?”

Atleti have lot of doubts about the quality of their defense, with the way we pressure them we make them panic. This is one of the most important games to play for us and I believe we will do good. its the last game in the intensive string, if we think Pep will have a chance to rest players in the cup.
RM next game is tricky, it will show if they prefer the liga to fight for or still believe in the CL through the selection they start in the liga few days before Liverpool battle. If we won drop points against atletico then they may see it more realistic to keep on fighting. If we win atletico we may end up having 10 points advantage before we play Lyon.
Kxevin up till now, and its still too early for a new player4 in a new team, I think Arshavin problem is his weak contribution in gaining back balls and pressuring the opponents. he is decent when he get the ball but he stand out there waiting for it. It work for arsenal, not for barcelona where the defense start with eto’o/Messi/Henry

The Gunners are a frustrating side to watch. They remind me of us, for sure, with that tendency to want the perfect goal. They tried to pass the ball into the net about 4,000,000 times today.
The jury is definitely still out on Arshavin, Ramzi. For sure. Good observation about him standing around waiting for the ball. The other crazy thing is how many people Arsenal have out injured, including Adebayor, Rosicky and Fabregas.

objectively speaking, i thought Arshavin was Arsenal’s brightest player against Fulham. RvP certainly did not deliver that game. the Gunners are dreadful this season.
as for not paying for a quick, slick-passing midfielder: why were we complaining about Xavi not getting rest time? because with Iniesta injured we have nobody who could take up that forward-playmaker position? with Arshavin out of the picture, i’d STILL pay €20m+ for the other outstanding player of that type on the market, Diego. swap him in for Xavi or Iniesta on a respectable rotation, and it’d be well worth it. the way we play necessitates that kind of player as the fulcrum of our attack, and we’re lucky to have 2 immensely skilled players who can own that position, but it’s my view that 2 players aren’t enough for a position that pivotal, particularly when ordinarily they would play at the same time.
again: we’re a massive club in a very strong financial position relative to most clubs in Europe, we’re competing in 3 competitions every season, and our evolved style of play under Pep is very high-tempo. not only can we easily afford to have a deep bench, it’s almost a necessity.

Agree BA, I think the reason why we had some problems resting Xavi (beside static tactics as I mentioned before)was the fact that Hleb is taking time to adapt. His injury came out in the worst timing. Now if he didn’t pick up his Previous “Arsenal Level” then we definitely need a new guy in the midfield instead.
So it wasn’t a matter of financial or unawareness of the need of depth. Pep signed the most realistic, reasonable, secure player available, but its not clicking up till now.
Most of the fans believe Hleb will never be good enough, But now that we can’t make transfers till summer, I say lets stick to the ones we have, support them so later on if they ended up being a flop it turn to be their own fault. I can still give Hleb a chance, or else Its unfair. no player can hit his form in three months which is the period Hleb actually played if we deduct the injury period. Keep in mind he was Arsenal Maestro for many years.
By the way, I tracked Hernanes recently the best way available, and even though its fishy that he had never been considered as a key player for Dunga, I still prefer him over Diego who seems to be a Vander vart for me, if you know what I mean.
I think if Milito, Pedro, Sanchez, Bojan, Caceres and hleb picked up form and got more involved for the rest of the season, lot of the conserns will end.
The only think I disagree with is that I actually prefer an Injury free RVP(if possible) over Arshevin. He is the most dangerous player in his team, he hammered that Post and was totally unlucky in his last game. he moves back tracking the ball, he pressure the defense, and his physical presence is much better than the Russian, and he is younger. Beside he can play on the flanks or in the Box.
