Preview: Barça – Espanyol; Saturday 2pmEST GolTV
By: Isaiah | February 20th, 2009
The fourth — and last — Barcelona derby of the season is upon us. Espanyol make the arduous trek across town to the Camp Nou to face off against Messi and his friends in a battle of first against worst. Barcelona are, of course, 10 points up in the league with 60 points while Espanyol are in 20th with 18 points. When the teams first met, at Montjuic, the teams both had 7 points. Since then, however, it’s been two very divergent routes. Check out the official site’s discussion of it.
That’s not to say that this won’t be a tough game because, frankly, it will be. Espanyol always show up for matches against us and we tend to play down to them a bit. Hopefully tomorrow is different (I’ll give you the real reason to think so in a bit — it’s not the outrageous statistical differences). For now, though, it’s a battle of the minds between Guardiola and Pochettino, the two coaches. Poche is the youngest coach in the league at 36, Guardiola the third-youngest at 38. Whereas Pep had the luxury of taking control of a high-performance sports car that just needed a bit of engine work, Poche has taken over a side that was drifting towards the bottom — perhaps free-falling that way would be a better description — and hasn’t been able to muster much of a turnaround. They’ve drawn a couple of times, but have failed to win under Poche.
The stats (ppg: points per game; gpg: goals per game; gapg: goals allowed per game)
Barça overall: 19W-3D-1L (70GF, 18GA), 2.61ppg, 3.04gpg, 0.78gapg
Espanyol overall: 3W-9D-11L (20GF, 37GA), 0.78ppg, 0.87gpg, 1.61gapg
Barça home: 10W-2D-0L (43GF, 8GA), 2.67ppg, 3.58gpg, 0.67gapg
Espanyol away: 1W-5D-6L (8GA, 21GF), 0.67ppg, 0.67gpg, 1.75gapg
Eto’o has scored 3 more goals than Espanyol as a team, just to put their goalscoring capabilities into perspective. In fact, Eto’o has scored more than Recre and Espanyol and the same number of goals as Mallorca and Osasuna. Wow.
Espanyol’s squad list is as follows: Kameni, Cristian, Javi Ruiz, David García, Lacruz, S. Sánchez, Beranger, Nico Pareja, Torrejón, Jarque, Román, De la Peña, Ángel, Moisés, Callejón, Luis García, Nené, Coro, Tamudo, Iván Alonso, and Juanjo.
Raul Tamudo, Sergio Sanchez, and Luis Garcia are all tied with 3 goals apiece to lead Espanyol and all 3 are available for the match. Jarque has 11 yellow cards to his name, so expect him to pick up at least one more this time around as well. Sorta like last time, when you knew it was coming. One thing, though, is that if Mando over at the Espanyol Offside is right, the players are the ones screwing themselves by subtle mutiny in the locker room. Interesting, if only because I hope that it means they play badly against us.
14 matches since their last win and 11 away matches since their last away win; not good stats for them. They’re coming off an 0-2 loss to Sevilla and before that, three consecutive 1-1 draws, and before that, losses and draws all the way back to their 1-0 defeat of Osasuna on November 2. Statistically speaking, when you are terrible and you go up against the best offense and defense in the league, well, to put it scientifically, you’re screwed.
Guardiola has already stated that he’s taking this match very seriously and that he expects to start Messi for it. And that, presumably, signals that this is going to be a long couple of weeks for our regular starters, especially with Iniesta out injured for another week and a half. How do we approach a game against the least prolific offense in La Liga? I suggest by playing hard, high pressure and keeping them off the ball with a machine called The Yaya. Put him in the middle and watch him destroy. He hasn’t played much of late, so let’s see what he can do after a week’s rest and what I hope was several deer carcasses tossed into whatever cage they have built that he allows them to hold him in. For the good of the scared children, of course. Also, after a week of rest, do you think that Dani Alves will be able to break the sound barrier on a run? I’m going with yes.
I would like to see the following lineup: Valdes, Alves, Puyol, Pique, Abidal, The Yaya, Xavi, Keita, Henry, Eto’o, Messi. I know that this lineup is a bit stronger than some would like, especially with Lyon on Tuesday, but I think that we can expect 60 minutes of out most of these players and 90 out of players like Keita. I would like to see Bojan out there fairly early, especially if we’re winning, but starting him is probably not a good idea because of how physical the game is going to be. He would just get bumped off the ball, shoved, tripped, and otherwise abused, all of which would get him frustrated. But if he comes off the bench, the defenders will have been worn down by the triple threat of our attack.
Were Iniesta available, by the way, I would advocate him starting and Henry replacing him in the 60th or 65th, but instead, we’re left with subbing on Bojan for the left, Hleb for the right, and Busi in the middle for Xavi. That is, in effect, going to a 4-4-2, with Eto’o and Bojan up front — at least in my mind it is because Hleb steps back on the right and plays more defensively/distributively, while The Yaya and Busi clean up the middle and Keita runs around the left like a crazy man. That does reduce our width on the left, but it also gives us a much great vertical threat, shuts down their engine room, and gives Hleb a chance to show that he can, actually, distribute the ball.
If we shut them down in the middle, it takes away a lot of their counterattacking, which is what could kill us, but with Puyol in the middle to marshal the forces, we’ll have a very solid 3 wide back line with Alves charging up and down to make wild challenges at the last moment, if necessary. The defensive line also allows us to push Puyol, if he’s 100% healthy, through 2 games with solid defenders at his side. Pique tomorrow and Marquez against Lyon. Then we shift gears for Atleti and put in Caceres and Pique or Marquez and Caceres.
I realize that sacrificing Messi after the 60th minute in favor of Hleb could destroy our attack and so I’d like to say that Messi stays on until we are up by 2 goals. That’s all there is to that, despite the fatigue and injury potential involved. We need to win this game, not because dropping points to Madrid would be so horrible, but because it’s against Espanyol and despite the fact that Guardiola claims he wants them to stay up, I do not. I want them to have the prettiest new stadium in the Segunda. Sorry, it’s just that way. Ask any perico what he or she would give to see Barça descend and I’m sure you’d get a list of everything they own and a lot of things they don’t (such as my right leg). So the dislike, I’m sure, is mutual.
Another point is the “Why no Pedro?” question. I can’t really answer that except to shrug and say “In Pep We Trust,” but it is conspicuous that he hasn’t played very much this year. In his one start (the 1-1 draw with Racing) he got a 6 from Kevin. Dude has played a part in 3 games, which I’m not sure is particularly fair given how hard he works in the games and given that he scored a few times in preseason. If the argument is that Hleb needs to be incorporated into the squad more so that he can prove himself, then the same argument must be made for Pedro. Even if he is friends with strange people. Perhaps in the Mallorca match?
But here’s what you have all been waiting for, the official prediction: 5-2. Yup, that’s right. A manita from our boys. Why so confident, you ask? Well, on Wednesday night/Thursday morning, I had a dream in which the final score was 5-2. All this from the dream: Alves scores from a free kick, Puyol scores twice and wins a penalty that is converted, and I guess someone else scored the 5th. But 5-2. You heard it here first.

Pathetic. Kxevin, your ratings will be interesting. The scoreline for Pep will be the lowest this season.
First of all against a team that we should have no fear of losing against, at half time he brings Henry off for Busquets. Fair enough but why not show your intent on winning the match and see how it goes for 15mins, after all we dominated the first half even after Keita saw red.
Then after going 2-0 down and bringing it back to 2-1 he takes off Eto’o and brings on Gudjohnsen. Now, I’ll admit that I suggested that we started with Gudjohnsen but I didn’t imagine any possibility of replacing our top goalscorer with a very-occassional goalscoring midfielder when we need goals.
Not only that, when taking Eto’o off, and replacing him with Eidur, he then saw fit to play Busquets as a striker in a “let’s boot the ball upfield and hope” tactics that we haven’t seen since Chelsea first got the idea with Drogba upfront.Oh my God
The referee was dominated all match and every decision that was asked for was given. The Keita red was unbelievable. The referee didn’t even give a foul when the tackle was made and then Ivan de little freak Pena kicked the ball out of play and screamed at the ref. The referee consulted the voices in his head and there it was. Out of absolutely nowhere. Keita looked puzzled. Pep looked like he had been smacked across the face with a fish. Eto’o went mental and the rest of the match was ruined.
We spent 60mins after that trying to get an Espanyol player sent off rather than focussing on winning the match. The Yaya was a beast. Other than that it was ‘4’s all around. I’m very disappointed. No need to ask Valdes how he feels…

Well Vivek, even the second best barca in the decade beat you guys black and blue in your own turf. What was more interesting the very next year is that even a 11 man Real cudnt beat more than half the game 10 men barca even after getting a penalty.
Thanks for your good wishes. All the best to you against Liverpool
. Hope you guys manage to reach Quarters for the first time last five yearsPosted from

The thing that pisses me off the most about this is match is NOT that we lost OR that Keita got a red he didn’t deserve but that Guardiola put in Xavi, Messi, and Alves and they played the entire 90 minutes. Did anyone see how tired they were by the 70th minute? How does Guardiola expect them to go to France and beat Lyon when they are exhausted? Put in the young ones, there’s a 10 point buffer and still many games to go, and let us put the Lyon match away so we can focus on the league again.
I’ll say this any day of the week: Champions League > Beating Espanyol.
But this is just crazy. Our 3 best players are not getting the rest they need and Guardiola is risking a massive disaster in the form of an injury.
Still, there are two games to be played against Lyon and 7 points is still a good buffer so let’s just keep going.
Like Ciaran I was shocked that Gudi was put in for Eto’o. Eto’o wasn’t playing well.. fine.. but put in Bojan and let Busi push up into the box when there’s a need to. There’s a difference between a 2-1 and a 3-1 but there is no difference when it comes to number of points gained..

@sid
Well i never said you couldnt beat us, you have a fair number of La Liga Titles to your credit, just that it would be so much fun to see this barca side touted to be best barca side in a while lose to a pretty mediocre madrid side ( whom you were expecting to crush by god knows how many goals at the camp nou). But I must admit you guys have been pretty good this season, playing some brilliant footie, but now what matters now is if you guys have the stomach for a REAL fight
, only time will tell. Cant wait for the next classico.Posted from

Do any1 else smell crisis at Barca? I do la liga will forever be Real Madrid owns. Barca is just second best to us.

Abidal out for 8 weeks with a torn groin muscle.
and what is the deal with the Madrid trolls? i don’t read their offside blog much, but i doubt when we were crushing everything in the fall and they were playing horribly you had cules coming into their threads trolling with this kind of frequency/stupidity.

Injury is starting to catch back up to us..1st Inesta now Abidal.

I can understand Busi on for Henry, but not Gudi on for Samu. This move screams no desire to tie or win the game and instead left no offensive threat on the front line except Messi who was left stranded with 3-4 guys covering him at all times. But even so, the worst was VV’s flub. Ugh.
Nevertheless, despite today’s setback, I trust our team has the mental fortitude to push through to the league championship. We have the mettle to do it.

Valdes messed up big time but he has been doing well all season and I’m willing to forgive him.
The transfer season’s gone anyway, even if we wanted to do something about it, there’s nothing to do and nobody to replace him. So it’s better to move on and hope he recovers.

well someone has to be the optimist, so I suppose it might as well be me. (well, RUV’s comment above pretty much did it, but I have to say something too.)
Two losses out of an entire season and people are saying “the liga’s not over, start worrying fellas”? oh come on you guys…sure, the liga isn’t over, it never is, but losing a game like this might hurt now but it’s not that huge a setback in the long run. It sucks to lose, especially to Espanyol, but really, one loss doesn’t kill us.
A +51 goal differential and sixty points is what we have. Let’s improve it, but not quiver at the prospect of our seven-point lead disappearing. It won’t happen.

@ Vivek. Sorry that came out sounding worse than I intended
(Never a good moment for any Barca fan to lose to Espanyol. They have hurt us badly in the past). I always look forward to a good game in Classicos. I rate the classicos better than any other rival matches ( Eg – Inter AC, ManU Arsenal, etc.)Posted from

BA
You’d be surprised how many Barca fans have been posting at the Real Madrid forum, especially since Schuster was fired and our team was playing like crap, so as I said before, our intention is not to antagonize, it’s just friendly bantering and trash talking, as you can see when OhYes responded to my post…
The Liga’s getting interested again, still a few difficult matches for both sides, and our team still has to catch up with you guys, so don’t worry, your team still has enough of a cushion to withstand a couple of bad games
As always, take care

Sweeeeeeeeet we’re gonna beat u guys in Lyon. Your defense is a mess (no abidal) Benzema Ederson Delgado will wreak havoc. You guys have no left side now! (less presure on Lamine Gassama)!

BA, if you think this is bad, go through some of Cesar’s posts. You’ll find a lot of grade-A trolling from a couple of Cules there.
Aaron: We still have Sylvinho and Puyol is back in business so there’s still a lot for you to worry about. It’s going to be a very close game, I can’t wait!
After months of constantly thinking about the Liverpool/Madrid clash, I’ve decided to support Real Madrid simply because I hate the EPL more than I hate Madrid. Any other Cules hoping that Madrid take that tie?

what do you guys think about eto’o saying he wants to stay here?

Sylvinho? Really? And since when does Puyol play left back? but I agree, it will be close and i also can’t wait. We’ll ravage your left side (out of position Puyol/Sylvinho v. Delgado/Keita/Ederson), you’ll ravage our left side(Messi v. Grosso=uhoh)!
Posted from

Don’t underestimate Sylvinho; he’s still tearing wingers apart and he can put in some good quality crosses. And what I meant by Puyol is that he will be back into CB position and it will take a lot to beat him. But, as we saw today, he can do well at LB, too.

where were all these stupid fucks during the other 3 espanyol games, and during the clasico? Barcelona have a game screwed over by the ref and suddenly the supporters of those other teams grow a sack and start talking? ( no offense though, i meant this only as friendly banter)
Posted from

Well, Sylvinho is about 35, which means he will definitely succumb to the speed of our wingers. Also, Puyol made lots of forward runs against Espanyol but didn’t have the speed to get back (Also, Espanyol and Lyon are hardly comparable).

Erm Jason, when you insult someone like that you can hardly just say no offense and get away with it. If you mean no offense why did you say that in the first place?

i said it sarcasticaly to satirize what they did by posting juvenile stupid comments that were all proceeded by a insencere explanation that they were just being playful.
But what would you expect from Madridistas.
