Preview: Barça – Valencia; Saturday 4pmEST, GolTV

By: Isaiah | December 5th, 2008

So it’s us vs Cesar, once again. This is the 2nd of our 4 Big Five matches before the end of the year, so we need to head in strong and wreck shop now, just in case Real Madrid drops more points against Sevilla. We play first so they’ll know what they need going in, but I’m not sure that will make a difference.*

Whatever, they don’t matter to us. Only Valencia matters to us. As Admiral David Farragut once yelled, “Damn the oranges, full speed ahead.” Do not look beyond this date, do not forget that we are only 4 points ahead of Villarreal, who play Getafe in the 2pm game. We could go into this game only 1 point up. In fact, I’m pretty sure that’s how it’s going to be, so this is a huge game.

Okay, so who are we playing? What’s this Villa Villa Maravilla nonsense I keep hearing about? What abut Samu Samu…Samutastic…? Dammit, that’s no good, someone come up with one, stat! Hurry, we’ve only got 24 hours!

Here’s their squad (position in parens): Renan (GK), Guaita (GK), Miguel (D), Helguera (D), Albiol (D), Jaume (D), Del Horno (D), Maduro (D), Albelda (M), Vicente (M), Fernandes (M), Baraja (M), Joaquín (M), Míchel (M), Pablo (M), Morientes (F), Mata (F), Villa (F)

I won’t hazard a guess as to their starting lineup, but here’s a little something on their players. Míchel and Juame are both reserve/B teamers (officially called Valencia Mestalla), so they’re complete unknowns to me. Remember Asier del Horno? He’s this guy. Of course he’s moved on from that, but that’s how I remember him, rather than as a fairly competent defender. Just thought I’d point that out…As if we need more of a reason to go in hard, right?

But, it’s not like Valencia isn’t third in the league, only 5 points behind us. They’re not some nobody from nowhere team. They’re no, um, Numancia. Wait. Let’s not talk about them. Or, maybe we should because they’re the only team that beat us. We have to remember that anyone can win on any given day.

Valencia is, as I said, 3rd in the league, with 27points (28GF, 14GA). They’re also third in the league in the Away category (behind Barcelona and Villarreal) with a record of 3W-3D-0L (9GF, 3GA). For comparison, we, the best away team, are 6W-0D-1L (18GF, 4GA). All of our table advantage so far is from those 6 points gained away. We’re 4W-2D-0L (22GF, 5GA) at home, so we’re taking the 5th best home record against the 3rd best away record.**

They score a lot, actually (T-3rd most in the league with 28), most of which (12) have come from David Villa. Little Juan Manuel Mata has scored 6 while Vicente and Joaquin have both scored 3 and Manuel Fernandes has scored twice. Two other players have 1 each to round out their scoring. Surprisingly, Morientes has no goals so far in 6 appearances, but injuries will do that to you. I’ve always enjoyed watching Morientes, even when he was at Madrid, though I really don’t know why.

So we need to shut down Villa and Mata. The best way to do that is cut off the midfield production, which, of course, is where Yaya comes in. With Abidal back from injury, we should have Puyol and Marquez in the middle making hay (perhaps while they kick ass) and a stronger left-sided attack. Our valiant Capitan can only do some much as a wingback, after all.

Here’s my proposed lineup, cobbled together from all of the people available (though no official squad list has been published as of yet; we know that Iniesta and Milito are out injured and Eto’o is suspended for yellow card accumulation):

Valdes, Alves, Marquez, Puyol, Abidal, Toure, Xavi, Keita, Messi, Henry, Bojan

Whatever your opinion on the kid, without Eto’o, Bojan is our best attacking backup. Put him in Eto’o’s spot and see how he does running “point”. He plays well with Henry and I believe he plays better in the center than on the wing, so let’s see how he does putting the onus on Messi and slipping in for tap-ins or open shots. I think he can break his league duck and grab a goal in this one.

Otherwise, stick with what we know: Xavi is on form, Yaya is The Great Wall of Barcelona, our greyhound (Abidal) is back, and Puyol is a bear trap waiting for you to foolishly step into the ring with him and mix some metaphors. Then there’s Messi(ah) who will break your ankles with his twisting, turning runs. That’ll teach you to get in his way.

So official prediction: 3-1 us. Valencia plays a more open game than other teams, so we should be able to open them up a bit. And also expect to see Hleb instead of Bojan (or perhaps instead of Keita). And you intrepid readers will note that, once again, I’ve called 3-1. Good times.

—–
Just a random note: Doesn’t Hleb look like a Andrei Kirilenko-esque Frankenstein monster in this picture? Also, what’s with the neckwarmers, Messi and Pique? (Pique appears in other pictures from the training session with a similar neckwarmer)

*As an FYI, so you can plan ahead, the official site has announced the times for the Clasico and the Villarreal match:
Barça – Real Madrid, Saturday Dec 13 4pmEST (10pm local time)
Villarreal – Barça, Sunday Dec 21 1pmEST (7pm local time)

**Please note that because this is Jornada 14, some teams have played 7 home games and 6 away games while the other half have played 6 home games and 7 away games. That can skew these stats a bit. Valencia earns 1.67 points per away match while we earn 2.57. We earn 2.33 points and Valencia earns 2.14 points per home match. If we do it that way, Barcelona is the #2 team in the home table, and Valencia is still the #3 team.

we take them the week after that :) We can take Madrid i think, only teams you should watch out for are the lower ranked but high scoring teams, like Getafe. But no worries, continue like this and you’ll drink champagne in april already!

    And thats that.
    Woohoo…
Bring on EE v Sevilla tomorrow night and then next week.
I can’t wait. We are definitely 6 points clear at the summit at this week’s end. The only question that tomorrow’s match answers is how many points clear of EE we go into the classico. We are 9 points clear of them now. If Sevilla win or draw then we are 8/9 points going into the classico.
We cannot lose the classico. That sounds obvious but if we can beat EE, it will do serious damage to their title hopes. Add to that, the matches that EE would have against Valencia and Villarreal in the following two matches it would make it a very interesting spring for the chasing pack.

IMO this was more entertaining than Sevilla. Honestly I was so entertained by this sudden flashback of Henry leading an attack again scoring goals that I didn’t even think of analysing the game or saying Hleb plays good at blablabla or Messi is just having a bad day. I didn’t even check to see what player had made an amazing pass or through ball. It was just AMAZING! Also, Abidal played brilliant for a person coming back from a 2 month or so injury! I have to say the Barca medical staff is amazing as well as the fitness level. Now RM losing (or drawing) to Sevilla will make my weekend! I’ll need an analysis by Kevin soon to make up from my daze. But he’s probably still at the Camp Nou or just leaving. So it’ll be awhile…

Hi Barca fans, im a Valencia fan and I just wanted to say congratulations on the match, you played better and deserved to win. I just wish our real defenders werent injured/sanctioned or the scoreline might have been a bit different (although I doubt we would have gotten better than a draw or a very lucky win even if we were in the best of days). It clearly wasnt our day, but the win was deserved.

Just try to do the same to Real Madrid, we want that CL spot badly (or even 2nd place), ill be cheering for you deserve top spot this year.

    Ciao!

Damn Henry.. was.. wow… I’m so happy for him! And that hug between Henry and Bojan made me tear up a bit. They clearly have a good relationship and it’s always good to see the veterans take a young player under their wing. I think Bojan and Messi also have a tight bond so hopefully Bojan will mature into a legend as well.

Valencia was playing a rough game towards the end. I was genuinely worried there, and I think Guardiola was as well. Villa didn’t get that many opportunities. I’ve always enjoyed watching him play, he’s amazing. They face off against Madrid in 2 weeks I think and I don’t have any doubts as to how well Valencia will do against them.

great game for us, Henry really stepped up. Yaya was even better, because he was looking forward more, rather than just gobbling up passes and making opposing midfielders cry. our back line was superb, the Cap’n & Rafa Show was on full display. the only difficulty was Hleb still not, well, being good. the game could easily have been 5 or 6 to 0, if Hleb played worthy of the money we paid for him.

Messi also wasn’t at his best, he just seemed a little sidelined, but if i know him at all that is a net plus for us, because it means he is going to come into next week’s game motivated and eager to make up. a 4-0 scoreline without Eto’o or Iniesta on the pitch and with Messi playing at reduced strength is a great omen for us, because title-winning teams win even with key people missing.

    @ Cesar
well if you don’t, surely i can throw it at Barca. They just suck, and yes Valencia and other clubs can decide when they play, Valencia shifts from sundays to saturdays all the time, 6 days before the match. Fuck Barcelona, and i am not saying that cause i envy their greatness, i hate Barcelona cause i have been there a million times, the city sucks and Catalans suck!

Respect to Eto’o, to Xavi, but the Puyol, the Messi, and all those other “still-in-the-closet” queers which i have never liked, i will never show my respect to cause they dont deserve it. And tomorrow i hope our team will show why these sissy’s don’t deserve respect from us.

Interesting fact, Villa has scored 5 out of 6 last times he was in Nou Camp… Lets make it 6 out of 7 i would say!!! AMUNT VALENCIA, y anti-Barca per sempre!!!

I thought Hleb played well today BA. He certainly deserves credit for a beautiful pass to set up Henry’s second goal. Even when we didn’t have the ball his work rate was very high, pressuring the defense and making life difficult for them. He missed a one on one with the goalie but then again so did Xavi early on.

I think people’s main problem with Hleb is that he is absolutely zero goal threat. Even when he went 1-on-1 I didn’t have any thoughts that he would actually score. His function is pretty much to try to open up the opposition with passing and movement but I’d rather see Victor Valdes going through on a 1-on-1.

    On the ratings…
Valdes – 8 – Didn’t have a great deal to do because his defense was all business
Alves – 8 – Great energy and a fantastic run for the goal but too much feigning injury for my liking
Marquez – 9 – Great match from Rafa. The ultimate sweeper performance
Puyol – 9 – Owned Villa all match. Enough said
Abidal – 9 – Defensively awesome against Joaquin & Miguel
Yaya – 10 – Dominant as per usual from our no.1 DM. Do you have to ask him for possession?
Xavi – 9 – Everything goes through him and didn’t put a foot wrong. Unlucky not to score
Gudjohnsen – 7 – Didn’t do anything wrong but nothing quite went his way
Hleb – 8 – Was ‘involved’ in 2 goals and didn’t do anything else spectacular
Messi – 7 – Couldda, Wouldda, Shouldda from the Messiah. Nearly but not quite his day
Henry – 10 – Great game from Titi. Scored 3, worked his heart out and deserved his hat-trick

Bojan – 8 – Fantastic setup for the goal. The extra touch taking Albiol out of the game was awesome.
Pedro & Keita didn’t really do anything of note.

The 8 for Dani could’ve been a 10 but I hate his playacting and he was rolling around all match.
Puyol & Marquez really proved that they are still the first choice partnership. And with Yaya infront and Abidal alongside, they look like a brick wall, reinforced by steel and with a force field infront of it.

Yaya showed Keita & Busquets who is boss from the sidelines. He was a one man wrecking crew. Albelda, Baraja & Fernandes were well and truly in his pocket every time they crossed the half way line. Henry will grab the headlines but Yaya is my man of the match.

    @ The german,
post the rest of the entire posts as well than! Like i said before, i dislike everything coming from Catalunya (read VCF-thread for reasons), i only have respect for Eto’o, Xavi, Laporta, Guardiola, the rest i dislike in the most expressed form of the word. Basically everything coming from the streets of Catalunya. And i didnt not say otherwise at any moment!

But, as i stated here before as well, that doesnt mean that i can not congratulate you guys with a deserved win hehe and some great football, im a realistic in your position. But that doesnt affect any of my hatred towards the Catalan arrogance infecting the beautiful sunny Valencian land. Guess having a nice discussion with the enemy isnt in it these days anymore, times change. AMUNT!!

Ciaran, you’re right. I was actually surprised when Hleb took a shot. It seems like it only happens once in a blue moon and it’s something he should definitely work on. When I watch him play, it somewhat becomes predictable in a sense that I know that he’s looking for that pass. But nonetheless, what he does, he does well but he should add another dimension.

Johnniewalker, I don’t care if you hate all things Barca. It’s just that reasonable die-hard fans are a minority in football. I hate the way certain fans tend to close their minds towards other teams by insulting, discriminating, singing racist chants, and their refusal to accept that on that ONE occasion, the opponent is the better team. It’s like praising the other team is such a mortal sin. They forget that in the end, we’re all fans of not just the team, but also the sport iself. Know what I mean?

hate is too strong a word…we have too much hate in this world as it is..and this comes from a guy who lives in a country where terrorists strikes are commonplace now-a-days..

dislike is ok…open hatred is not…
tone it down a wee bit fellas…
the world will better off for it

    coming back to the match…

i thought Valdes was cool in ensuring Villa didn’t get a shot away in the 2nd half…[8/10]

Abidal is a rock…man did we miss him…He absolutely owned Joaquin..[9/10]

El Capitan and Rafa marked Villa out of the game reducing him to taking shots outside the box..[8/10 for both]

    Alves isn’t human…i swear..that guys a robot..keep running Dani..*touchwood*[9.5/10] (the 0.5 off for rolling on the floor)

Xavi had an ok game by his standards…but the momnet he was subbed we could see the difference it made…the passing wasn’t there anymore[8/10]

Guddy didn’t put a foot wrong cause basically he had not much to do to tell the truth[7/10]

Yaya Toure…MonsToureous…their midfield didnt have a prayer…scrumptous lob to set up Henry for his forst goal and did his overall job of crushing the opposition splendidly…[10/10]

Hleb…score godddamnit…nice link up play…nice set up fro Henry but still not match fit…gave the ball away a few times and once to Villa who was then instantly beaten up by Marquez,Puyol,Toure and Abidal…
but at leats he registered a shot on target..*phew*
[7/10] and get some meat on your bones

Messi..blew hot, blew cold and sometime frustrated me…pass the ball Messi-ah…wreaked havoc nonetheless..tracked back and fouled guys…that was badass…our little boy is fast becoming a nasty mo-fo and i love it…[7.5/10]

Henry…a complete virtuoso performance by Titi…faded a bit into the 2nd half but finished strongly…the first two goals were so typically Thierry Henry goals that i gasped…beautiful game for the Frenchman…[10/10]

    subs
Bojan..[8/10]..this is the role i like for him…kick the teams that are down by toying with their defence

Pedro..Private Pandemonium had not much to do..[6/10]

Keita…one header off target and generally scrappy play..[6/10]

of course, and i absolutely do not deny how good your team is. Fact is i don’t have good experiences with the city, people and province of Catalunya and therefore i have some good reasons not to like it, plus the club and i don’t go well together either so i can be unsulting at times :) With this post i got carried away a bit, and i apologized in the following posts. Anyway in the end we like football together, and so i can also have some fun here, until the germans invade again ;)

Kevin must be in heaven after watching that great match. His man gets a hattie and plays fantastic, and the first even came on a long ball. Kevin was calling for more of that all last spring.

That was about as total a match against a very good team that I’ve seen. Everyone was excellent for Barca.
