Preview: Barça – Valladolid, Saturday 4pmEST, GolTV

By: Isaiah | November 7th, 2008

We’re back to La Liga now, as Valladolid comes rumbling into the Camp Nou once again. The last time we faced Valladolid was also at the Camp Nou, way back on March 23, 4 days after losing to Valencia in the semis of the Copa del Rey. Barça won that game 4-1 thanks to goals from Eto’o, Iniesta, and Bojan (2). And that, ladies and gents, is why our little one is pictured here. We’ve talked about him before, we’ll talk about him again, but this was a coming-out party, of sorts, where you just sorta knew that the kid was brilliant. He’d scored before, but man, he was good that day. It was also one of Kevin’s first ever match reviews. Check it out here.

Will he have a game like that again? Probably not, if Guardiola’s whole “I’m not going to play Bojan for 90 minutes in the league” thing holds. But if he does get out there, I like his chances of making an impact, since we’re missing Iniesta, so we’ll need Bojan to step up, if only as a sub.

Real Valladolid, then, should be someone we concentrate on. We need all the points we can before we head into our Stretch of Death. This little team, the Pucela, are a feisty bunch and don’t really lay down for anyone. They finished 14th last year, but took points off of us the first time they met us in el Estadio Jose Zorrilla in Valladolid (1-1), so don’t count them out just based on their record. Except I’m kind of going to do just that: their away record is 0W-0D-4L (1GF 6GA), making them one of two teams without an away win (the other being Numancia). That doesn’t bode well when they enter the gladiator-dome that is the Camp Nou. We’re the Russell Crowe to their Joaquin Phoenix, so to speak.

Feel free to take that image and run with it in the comments. Or suggest your own reference.

Barcelona, for their part, are 3W-1D-0L (15GF 4GA) at home, so Valladolid’s strike force has their work cut out for them. It’d be easy to get carried away and suggest we’ll win by like a billion goals, but of course we won’t. With Iniesta and Abidal on the sidelines, we’ll be a little clunky, a little out-of-sync, and needing a spark. That spark, as I’ve suggested, could come from Bojan, but could also come for more unlikely places, such as Sylvinho or Cáceres.

It almost doesn’t matter how Valladolid comes to play because we are, after all, at home and better. I’m sorry to put it so bluntly, but we’re going to stamp our authority on this match and Guardiola isn’t going to let another Basel-esque home flop happen. And yes, drawing 1-1 with Basel is a flop, just as much as drawing 1-1 with Valladolid would be a flop. I know that’s arrogant and dickish of me, but we’re in this to win it, baby, and I think that’s just what we’ll do.

No squad listing yet, but I’ll try to get one up soon. Without one, here’s my guess:

Valdes, Alves, Puyol, Pique, Sylvinho, Toure, Xavi, Hleb, Messi, Henry, Eto’o

I’m sure I’m wrong, but that’s what I see happening, especially before a Benidorm match in which Guardiola will probably start Bojan and Pedro. Valladolid’s coach, Mendilibar, has claimed on their official site that he won’t change how Valladolid plays — so if you know how Valladolid plays, and I don’t, then you know what’s going to happen. My guess is we’re going to beat them. Not beat the pants off of them, but we’ll beat them.

Official prediction: 2-0. Note that I didn’t guess 3 for us for the first time in a while. We’ll start off weak and build into our attack. I think it’s Eto’o and Bojan who get goals. We haven’t see the our Cameroonian score for a bit, so it’s time he broke that streak.

As always, here’s a list of Where to Watch our beloved troops take the field of battle. Kevin and whoever else lives in Chicago, we need some Chicago representation on this page, so suggest something!

And in case you missed it, the official squad photos are out. My favorite? The boys look good in pinstripes, but seriously, nothing beats this badass one. And then there’s the official stats page, which I’m super thrilled about.

a steamrolling. i love Samuel. but the man of the match was definitely Messi; in a just world he gets a goal. he was the provider of so many great opportunities. the next person to claim the prominence of statistics to determine the worth of a player i’m directing to this game. Messi got no goals, but created chance after chance through spectacular vision and control. Xavi, Yaya, and especially Puyol were also out of this world (to borrow a Hudsonism).

Henry was mostly crap, and Gudjohnsen was ponderously slow for 98% of the match (excepting his goal), but to talk about disappointing performances after that would seem a bit cheap. GREAT game.

i bet Iniesta wishes he was out there.

I bet Iniesta does wish he was out there, but the type of guy Iniesta appears to be would cause him to say, “GREAT game” just like you did, BA.

    Now, to college football!

    best performance so far\
    Guardiola I love you
Poyol.. what shall I say he coverd the whole field
Valdes.. you are the the man
    Messi you was soooooo generous
Eto’o?? you scored 4 goals and there was no penalties among them!! “some other poeple was going crazy because their Higuain scored 4 goals 2 of them was penalties!!
Xavi, was a little bit out of form but ad ramzi always says when Xavi is out of form he is good, otherwise he is great!
    Alves.. top quality
Henry?? I really wanted him to score, it seemed the whole team wanted so, I’ll keep Kxevin to rate him!!
Tore’ best DM ever ever ever.
Piquet good depth, a bit shaky
    Marquez, powerfull like ever.
Hleb, only with you ineista can have a deep sleep! top class touch.
Kieta, good strength to the midfield, but he needs time to recover and blend.
Caceres he did his job as required.
oh I almost forgot, Gudiiiiii, only you can score in this way calm and confident .
    fly barca fly………

-Wow, Messi was amazing tonight, but only barca fans, and maybe some valladolid fans will understand that. I think that his team-mates should have done better to give him a goal.

-Henry was crap today. in the first half he over-elaborated on everything. He should have had 2 goals in the first half. A man earning his wage should have put them away. Goal or no goal i was very unimpressed.

-Xavi was a bit quiet today. but still. made 0 mistakes.

-WTF is up with puyol, can someone let him know that he’s too old to be running up and down the field like that! This man was born to be an athlete. i dont even know the name whatever player was playing on the right for them, he never retained possesion enough to be mentioned, as everytime he saw the ball he also had puyol breathing down his neck ready to take what is his. How does Kevin put this, He was everywhere, at the right time.

No offense to Guardiola’s picks, but i think i like Caceres better than Pique. pique is still to erratic, and had to be saved by our tireless captain… i think in a replay i saw Marquez giving Pique a lesson on defending. Caceres has some bite to him. Cant wait for him to get some more minutes.

i know i already mentioned it, but it cant be said enough. Messi OWNED. Henry sucked. Puyol is great!

Valdes – 7 – did what little he had to well. Showed good concentration.
Alves – 7 – 8 going forward, 6 defending. Marquez covered his wandering but his assist was suberb
Marquez – 8 – would have gotten a 9 if he played 90mins. Read the game excellently
Pique – 7 – One or two near slips in the first half but solid throughout the rest of the game
Puyol – 9 – Possibly a 10 but he cheated by watching the match tape before the kick-off :)
Toure – 8 – Read the game very well but his distribution was iffy in the first half
Xavi – 7 – I thought he was much quieter this match but made no errors. Played 10yards further back
Gudjohnsen – 8 – Solid midfield performance and his movement was excellent. Finished how Henry should’ve
Messi – 9 – His running on/off the ball was fantastic and was unplayable
Eto’o – 10 – A striker’s job is to finish and none do it like Samu

Caceres – 7 – No mistakes and I love his style of defending
Keita – 6 – Gives us a drive from midfield unlike any other. Very direct play and made no mistakes
Hleb – 7 – Great play for the Henry goal. I still have to say it though… SHOOT

I have to say my favourite part of the match was Caceres’ sliding tackle after like a minute of being on the pitch. He is just a no-nonsense defender like Puyol. He and Pique are so the business. Confidence and experience is all they need.

By the way, if 9CLs was watching… compare RVN to Eto’o now… :)
