Preview: Sporting Gijon – Barça, Sunday 3pmEST
By: Isaiah | September 20th, 2008So the next game is nearly upon us and it’s another Sporting, this time Sporting Gijon of Asturias. The lineup will, as always, look different than it did, but hopefully the same result as in the last game against Sporting will occur. That one was a 3-1 victory on Tuesday in the Champions League and while a newly promoted team shouldn’t present as much of a problem as the runner-up from Portugal, the league has, for the last couple of years, been a bad place for Barcelona away from home.
Even Guardiola agrees that it’s time to win some games, so let’s get this party started, eh? But with who? With what squad, oh great and wonderously impossible to predict Pep?
Here is the full squad: Valdes, Pinto, Alves, Pique, Marquez, Puyol, Xavi, Gudjohnsen, Iniesta, Eto’o, Abidal, Toure Yaya, Caceres, Bojan, Keita, Messi, Pedro, Busquets
Abidal and Busquets return to the squad as Henry is dropped because of illness and Sylvinho ostensibly because Abidal is in. Let’s just hope that the rest of the squad stays healthy and doesn’t share drinks with the sick players. Or thongs. So here’s my “educated” guess as to what the starting lineup will be:
Valdes, Alves, Pique, Puyol, Abidal, Keita, Xavi, Iniesta, Messi, Eto’o, Pedro
Still no Bojan, I guess, but we’ll have to see if he isn’t the one who comes on for Pedro or if he isn’t started in his stead to give the left a player who is more comfortable there. Busquets is the “revelation” of his previous start, but I don’t know if Guardiola will use him early. Unless he does. See how hard this is? Goddammit.
Anyway, there’s not much to discuss about the squad, other than to say that we need to win this game to really kickstart the season. Spotting other teams (and specifically RM) more points (though they play Racing Santander in Santander so three points isn’t a given) is not something we need to do. Espanyol are leading the league (though perhaps only until tomorrow), after all, which is ridiculous, so we need to quickly retake the lead by beating Sporting and then Real Betis on Wednesday.
But on to Sporting Gijon, newly promoted as I said, and full of goals if the 4-3 Sevilla victory at the Sanchez Pizjuan is any indication. They got a hat trick from Mate Bilic, so containing him is obviously priority number one. Bilic, like most of Sporting Gijon’s squad, is a journeyman, but even journeyman (and youngsters, who make up the non-journeyman part of Gijon’s roster) can hurt you if you don’t mark them well.
Not that the flood of goals they put into Sevilla’s net has helped them one iota. They’re in last place, having also lost to Getafe 1-2 in Gijon at their stadium, El Molinón. So they have a porous defense, at least, but they’ll probably park the bus and hope to pull of what Numancia did. I think that with Messi all the more motivated by both the criticism and the praise from his teammates and the media over whether or not he’s too selfish, we’ll see a positive result, though maybe a few scary moments.
I’ve predicted all of the games for the first half of the season in order to compete with a friend in a silly bet — I’ll let you know how that goes — but I’m going to have to change what I said for that bet (2-0) to a slightly closer score.
Official Prediction: 2-1.
The game will be broadcast on GolTV here in the United States and on Canal+ in Spain (or so I understand). It’s at 3pm EST, or 9pm Barcelona time. As always, here is the link to Where to Watch, in case you don’t have GolTV.
I will be at Nevada Smiths tomorrow, sporting my typical red Jayhawks hat, my home jersey from last year, jeans, and 3 days worth of beard. And glasses. Feel free to stop by and say hello.

I think its more likely that we’ll see Iniesta pushed up on the left wing and a midfield of Xavi/Toure/Keita.

here is an interesting article about barca tracking saloman kalou from chelsea because he is not happy there:

he would presumably play on the left wing. what say y’all?

As I said on pep blog,
I will not be surprised if pepe played this selection, even though I don’t like it! pinto- payol-pique-abidal-caceres-busquets-toure-gudi-iniesta- bojan- pedro
not that I don’t like it, but it will be too risky after 2 bad results in the beginning of the season, I guess its better to collect some points then going back to this squad polishing strategy.Posted from

It would be possible that Guardiola may rest Xavi from the starting XI cause he has played a lot and didn’t have a quiet summer.
It wouldn’t surprise me if he played 2 from Busquets/Yaya/Keita in midfield with Iniesta getting a free role slightly forward. Then have Messi, Eto’o and Krkic up frontPosted from

Official Starting XI:
Valdes
Alves, Marquez, Puyol, Abidal

Iniesta looks great on the left. Finally we’re translating all of this pressure into actual goals. 12-1 on corners.

We are leading 0-2 Half time. Difference – Pretty good work rate and loads of players attacking the box.
Busquets looks good. Cud be the defensive midfielder for the future if we can beef him up a little.

Sergio Busquets makes me cry.
Xavi’s pushing up as an attacking player i really, really like though. he and Iniesta work so well together; i swear i’ve seen them do that exact same combination a half-dozen times.

A lot of players excelled today, but Busquets is a real gem! 48 good passes of a total of 50, 9 steals, 5 faults received… And it’s just his second official match!

Oh, and Busquets just made one fault.

And Iniesta… Well, perhaps his best performance IMO.

excellent game, our offense was really effective. Sporting aren’t a good team and they went down to 10 men early in the 2nd half, but we still finished very well and kept good possession.
HOWEVER…. our defense is still not good. and i think i’ve identified the problem, though i don’t like saying it: Puyol is just too slow. every chance Sporting had, including the goal, were a result of Rafa playing too far up the pitch and Puyol not being able to get back in time. look: the kind of long possession play that we do, and do beautifully at times, requires other teams to hit us on the counterattack. smart teams will park 10 men behind the ball when we have it and look every time for quick breaks through our back line. therefore, we need center backs who are not just capable otherwise but above of FAST ENOUGH to track these players back if they get caught out, which will inevitably happen to anyone. Puyol just doesn’t have that speed anymore (i don’t think Rafa does either, but the way he and Puyol play he doesn’t need to chase as often).
if this is the case, we have tough options. either replace Puyol with someone (ideally i would say Pique, who is quite fast especially for such a big guy) and keep Rafa in the middle for his distribution qualities; or keep Puyol for his leadership and the occasional good tackle but pair him with a fast center back that will play a bit more centrally and further back to protect us against the counter.
that’s how i see it anyway.

0-6 Win for us. And Iniesta put in a very good performance, so strike 1 against his detractors (Kxevin/Isaiah, I am waiting for your player ratings).
And the partnership between Messi and Alves rocks.

BA, Puyol really has lost his pace, but I think that his solid tackle, unbelievable work rate and the fact that he would actually die for the team makes him an automatic starter. When Caceres adapts or when Pique is ready, I think that one of them would make a great partner for Puyol.
What a match. The review on goal is very promising, saying that “Barca are back”. I don’t know what Pep said to them, but it sure as hell worked.
Oh and Busquets is a monster. No doubt that if he performs consistantly over the next few years, a full-fledged man-crush may be in motion.
