Random crumbs: Beckham’s yellow (hair), Motta and Edmilson back
By: Isaiah | May 2nd, 2007
The day is early and there’s a lot going on somewhere in Italy, but for all the Barcelona fans out there who are watching the action from afar, here’s a bit of fun we can all enjoy: David Beckham has asked the Spanish Football Federation to rescind his yellow card from the weekend game against Athletic Bilbao…as a birthday gift. You can’t see me (or hopefully you can’t, because that would be creepy), but I’m definitely laughing at this moment. Regardless of whether or not the card was warranted (time wasting when you’re up 0-3? I don’t know, I didn’t see it), it’s worth the headline. Soon enough this laugh-riot with blond hair will be headed this way across the pond, but it probably won’t be as good as the original. As a Barca fan, it’s just hilarious. What’s not funny is how close the top of the league is. In case you missed it, Phil Ball’s column is here.
As for the team itself, Barcelona tabloid Sport is reporting that Thiago Motta and Edmilson are set to return to training and could be fit for the weekend match against Real Sociedad. While their return to play isn’t particularly important, it does provide a welcome set of substitutes, just in case. Motta has been out of action for so long (3 years? I can’t even remember the last time he played), that putting him on the field with more than 10 minutes left, regardless of the scoreline, would be pretty silly. Edmilson hasn’t been out for as long, but shouldn’t be considered for a starting position either and probably not even before the 70th minute, assuming we have the luxury of such flexibility.
Miroslav Klose has agreed, in principle, according to a random German newspaper, to sign for Bayern Munich this summer if Werder Bremen agrees to his 15 million euro pricetag or, if they don’t, to leave the club on a free transfer during the summer of 2008 after his contract expires. In principle, according to ESPN’s Soccernet, that’s untrue and now the German FA is getting involved with an investigation into Klose’s ill-timed meeting with Bayern representatives. Regardless, Barcelona is out of contention on signing the German striker. At least in principle, according to a random German newspaper.
It’s been widely reported already that Pepe Reina’s house was robbed while he was laying some serious smackdown on the likes of Arjen Robben and Geremi. Still, it’s worth mentioning again. How lame is it that they burned out his Porsche? I mean, the guy no doubt has plenty of money for several other, duplicate versions of his Cayenne, though he probably doesn’t have the kind of cash it would take to buy a single Green Monkey.
Can you tell work is boring?
