Riiiing! Time for a new beginning, sort of. Pre-season opus.
By: Kevin | July 13th, 2008
Pre-season begins tomorrow, with as many unanswered questions as there are stars in the sky. No, I don’t have any answers, but I do have a boatload of speculation, which can be just as much, if not more fun.
Here’s who is scheduled to appear with the squad, and when:
Monday: Valdes, Henry, Yaya, Marquez, Jorquera, Oleguer, Sylvinho, Krkic, Ronaldinho, Gudjohnsen, Pinto, Crosas, Abidal, Pique, Caceres
Tuesday: Messi
Saturday: Keita, Alves, Eto’o
July 23: Xavi, Iniesta, Puyol
Two-a-day sessions are scheduled at the Miniestadi, which will become the first team’s practice home, because Guardiola likes it so much, and is used to it. And these days, what Pep wants, Pep gets.
Now, what we don’t know is who will actually show up. The big rumor is that Ronaldinho is going to Article 17 our asses, and buy out his contract. He won’t show up for training, and someone from Milan is actually in Barcelona to facilitate the process and put the ultimate smack down. We still get paid, Milan saves the money, then they can use it to finalize that cut-rate Adebayor deal and conclude what would be a great summer for them, at our expense.
The excuse Ronaldinho will use will be the club’s refusal to allow him to play for his country in the Olympics. Stay tuned.
The players listed above are who we’ll be beginning the pre-season with. On the block, however, are Crosas, Gudjohnsen, Ronaldinho, Eto’o and Oleguer. We would LOVE to find homes for all of them either while on the tour, or before the summer transfer window closes.
Note that one name is absent from the above list: Aleksandr Hleb. We’ve signed him, we think. Arsenal says no, we haven’t because we’ve offered 15 million, and they want 18 million. Whatever. Look for that deal to be finalized and announced next week at the absolute latest. Hleb will then join the team wherever they are.
More unanswered questions include: Eto’o? Whither thou goest, cranky Cameroonian? We’re playing a dangerous game with him. If we are going to sell him, we have to sell him thisfreakingyearrightnow! Augggggh! Does anyone want to contemplate losing Eto’o for peanuts next season, or free transfer the following season? Repeat after me: “No, uncle Kxevin.”
What about Ronaldinho if the Milan rumors aren’t true? Does he start the season with us, get in shape, play his way back into the side then we deal him in January? That’s more likely, frankly, than the Article 17 business. Then again, if the relationship is that damaged, he wants out and we want him out. So open that checkbook, R10.
Can we find a home for our we-want-outs, Crosas, Gudjohnsen and Oleguer? Rumors have swirled, nobody concrete has bitten. Guardiola says that Crosas is a first-teamer until he is sold. And we’ll probably put him out there in pre-season so that he can show off and we can get some money for him.
The ugly spectre looming over all of this is the unsettled board. Even if we believe the Cruyff in as sporting director rumors (then he can stop trying to run the team from his newspaper column, and put his ass on the line), it’s still gutted. Can it do what it needs to do in the transfer market? And what about that big, strong “9″ that Guardiola is so craving to make his happy world complete?
Well, how about this:
Sport (yes, the ever-reliable Sport) is reporting that we are going to offer Arsenal Eto’o plus 10 million for Adebayor, for our final offer. This gives us our man, and gives Arsenal a replacement. Problem solved, right?
Now before the screaming begins, this is probably what the board is thinking:
1. Man, we want Eto’o gone.
2. If we’re going to sell, it has to be this year. Next year, he’s cut-rate because it’s that or free transfer.
3. Adebayor is younger, bigger and stronger. His up side is unrealized. We know what Eto’o can do, which is….
4. NOT score against Premiership sides. If Adebayor gets us past those hurdles, the risky move is worth it.
5. Can Eto’o recover from his injuries, or is he really the player who can’t outrun Rio Ferdinand now?
He’s been on the market for months, with no takers. We valued him at 40 million, knowing that we’d deal at 30 million. Not a peep. Rumors, but nothing serious. I don’t know what other teams know that we don’t, but there’s something going on that is simpler and deeper that “They’ve said they don’t want him, so wait for them to come to us.” I’d love to know what it is.
We have six friendlies scheduled: July 24 v Hibernian, July 26 v Dundee United, July 30 v Fiorentina, Aug. 3 v Chivas (in Chicago, I’ll be there along with a few other folks), Aug. 6 against the New York Red Bulls and Aug. 16 for the Gamper match v Boca Juniors.
Also, there are two Champions League qualifiers scheduled: 12 or 13 and 26 or 27 August. A reminder: Those qualifying rounds are knockout. For us to not qualify would be catastrophic. Laporta would be run out of town on a rail, and Guardiola would become a wanted man.
Questions still to come: What will be the ultimate squad composition? What B-teamers will be moved up? What will the starting XI be?
Stay tuned for this and more, on “As the Barca Turns.”

woohoooo on the eto story. As his blog’s biggest fan on eto I say welcome back bad boy! by the way.. i am sure, if we all go back to the Paris final that it was ETO who unlocked the EPL defence? Right? And Matt my Aussi bro, i could not agree with you more… its simple Eco 101… Demand and Supply. NEVER say we dont want something, what the hell are we thinking? on the R10, see you later, thank you for the memories, good luck!
p.s i just got my new kit. cool… the goalkepper was very small!Posted from

one more thing, i see on your list Oleguer & Gudjohnsen. What the F. as a catalan i love what Oleguer stands for, but he is just crap on the field, stick to poetry, get a job, see you later
Gudjohnsen needs to go back to EPL, he has no right in spain, he is slow, his skills, well they are lacking, and his firts touch in crap… we can all score when we are on the filed, so see you later!Posted from

I think Berbatov’s as good as gone now that Utd have their sights on him..they bid 20, then 25, then 28 million POUNDS on him depending on whom you may believe…

Kxevin, while I understand that Eto’o has not scored against English opponents in the last two years in C’ league, the blame has to be on Barca attack and playing style as a whole and not just on Eto’o…we sucked big time last year against Utd. and the liverpool game..well I think they got lucky due to the comedy of our defense at the Camp..then all they had to do was defend till they won the game and counter…(and you have to keep in mind that Utd did that last season to many many attacks…they had the tightest defense) ..
I think the way Barca plays can be very slow sometime…which would help teams to get back and pack..now I am not saying that we should play counter attack football all the time…but we were too predictable on the other end of the spectrum so to say …there needs to be versatility in attacks…some of them slow, some medium and some (very small) fast counter attacks…Posted from

Barca board should be tought Eco 101 in my school here… 15 million for Ronnie! haha…even though he is not fit..but he is still world class..man how much money we would have made last year had we sold him for 100 million to Chelski!..I just hope he ends up in Citeh…serves him right to rot there
Ade = Eto’o + 10 …i thought Eto’o was to be sold for 30 million??? so we want Ade at 40?? what is going on in the world…
also they come out and say that we don’t want Crosas! WTF…I mean he is a Barca product who plays in Lyon ..can he be that bad that he cannot contribute to our team as a sub?? even if he cannot ..play him some more time in the preseason..dont say that we want to sell him off!Posted from

apparently Pep said that Crosas will be coming and playing with Barca on the tour, but that they are looking for him to leave the club, hopefully with a good situation.

I hear you, Mat. I just appreciate the tactical versatility that a big, strong striker would give us. Funny, there’s a piece on Goal.com about that very thing, and will Arsenal miss Adebayor because they, like us, would try to pass the ball into the net. And with the arrival of the big Togolese striker, suddenly they could throw in crosses, and play long ball if they had to.
http://www.goal.com/en-US/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=775970
15 million to have Ronaldinho gone is worth it. I know that it’s below his market value, and way below what we would have liked to have sold him for. But at this point, he’s holding the team hostage, and being exceptionally difficult.
As is not a surprise to anyone, he didn’t show up for medical exams/practice today, claiming that he isn’t part of the club any longer. Unreal. Citeh and Milan are the two suitors. We like Citeh’s offer, because it gives us more money (32 million). The R10 camp likes Milan’s offer better, because of the profile, and the almost certain Champions League football the following season. We’ll see what transpires.
But we have three weeks to finalize Champions League rosters, so we have to get him the hell out of here, and figure out what the composition of our roster is going to be.
Yes, he did a lot for the club, but we also did a lot for him. He gave us titles, we made him a worldwide icon. Fair deal. And it’s absolute, unmitigated bullshit the way we’re being treated. After last season, he should have been champing at the bit to make it right, and show the fans that indeed he was injured, and he’s ready to go out like a man. Instead, he’s going out like a knuckleheaded, pouting child. 15 million to get rid of that nonsense is a bargain.
Everyone, my apologies for the comments of 9 Champions League Titles, and my slowness at cleaning them up. I can only repeat that such comments will not be tolerated. One of the things that makes this space so good is that it’s free of that sort of nonsense. No racial, sexual, political, sexist or other sorts of commentary will be allowed here. Period. Not on my watch. I don’t know who’s is what, and I don’t care who is what, but any, all and everyone should be able to come here and read, post and comment in an environment that makes them feel comfortable. That means no hostility. I’m very easygoing, but not about that. Such things are completely unacceptable, and these are the last words I will post about that. Henceforth, offensive comments will simply disappear.
Sorry for the nanny screed, and I hope everyone understands.

It’s funny, Mat, there were some very minor bleatings about selling Ronaldinho before last season began. Very brief, but they were there. And man, was the outrage palpable. You’re right, in retrospect. We could have sold him for crazy money last season, and let someone else deal with the foolishness.
Eto’o is a whole ‘nother matter. In some ways if he stays, it will create as many questions as it answers. If he stays, we’d better sign him to a one-year extension or something, to keep the cut-rate sale from happening. Or if we keep him and he’s great, sell him for big money in January.
I love what he does. If we could have him and a big ol’ box thug like Adebayor, I’d love it. I’m still not sure why we can’t, except for the unknown locker room stuff.
Oleguer and Gudjohnsen are on the roster right now, because we can’t find homes for them. Gudjohnsen is a probable departure. We just have to make him cheap enough. Not sure about Oleguer. He might be resigned to sub-land.

yes you are right Kxevin…there were some bleatings about dumping him..and although I am glad to know that I was on the correct side in thinking that he was done at Barca, but to boot him out just one year after a C’League and Liga double would have been preposterous and would have put Barca in the league of other arrogant teams not grateful to their players (you know which one I am talking abt
)
But saying that, TWO years is more than enough..he has to go now ..although i am not against the idea of giving him a warm farewell when he does find a new bench! ..he got us the C’ league after so many years…Posted from

But will Eto’o return to camp? And doesn’t the summer silly season bring in more $$$ bling than January? He needs to be sold now.

Si en este plazo de tiempo no se concreta la operación, el jugador se reincorporará a los entrenamientos.
FCB website says that in meeting today Ronnie and his agent, and Txiki etc, have come to agreement that an attempt will be made to get rid of ronnie in the next 2 or 3 days, and if in this time a transfer does not happen, Ronnie will begin training at Barca.

You’re right, Elisa. Summer definitely brings more money, unless in the case of Eto’o, he comes back and shows that he is the man again. Don’t forget, as someone pointed out, that Rio Ferdinand was able to chase him down. Could that have happened two years ago? Heck, no.
Mat is right. We’re being plagued by our own humanity. If we had said “Look, this dude has never lasted more than three good seasons anywhere, and he’s been here four. Let’s sell him,” the board would have faced and LOST a censure vote. But man, would they have been right. Or maybe the damage was done here? Who knows? At this point, I just want it to be over.
It’s more likely that we begin the season with Eto’o than Ronaldinho.
Thanks for the update, ballbeav. I’ve been hearing that would be the likely tack. I think that Laporta et al want to give him the chance to go out with dignity, rather than being tossed out the back door. That’s cool, and we owe it to him for what he’s done for us. But he also needs to recognize that he wouldn’t be the player that he is were he still feeding balls to Mendy and the like at Paris St.-Germain.
I just can’t believe that a deal won’t get done before week’s end.
Some of Guardiola’s comments, by the by, are excellent. My favorite was when he said that perhaps the players would prefer a softer coach, but unluckily they have a 37-year-old manager who has great expectations.
Awesome.

Brilliant story about Eto’o joining a club in Uzbekistan on loan… I pee’d a little bit. I’ve heard some crazy rumours in my time, like the Messi to Zenit a couple of weeks ago, but Eto’o to the champions of Uzbekistan takes the cake. Watch this space… :L
Reports say that Fluminese don’t want to finalise a deal for Thiago Neves knowing that after the Olympics his price could go through the roof. We should deal now because he certainly has the potential, and €10million isn’t even a lot of money to gamble. If he doesn’t do the business his price won’t even go down. We could end up doing another Arshavin in terms of a players value quickly changing. And still we wait…
The €32million offer Man City made for Ronnie does create an interesting situation. When Jonas Gutierrez left Mallorca it created a few questions with Article 17. First of all, the player is supposed to make the club aware of his intention within 15days of the last game of the season, Ronnie obviously hasn’t done this. The second thing is that Mallorca are beginning legal proceedings to take Jonas to court to increase the compensation package to equal that of an offer made by another club for his transfer. If they were to be successful (although it would obviously take a while) it would mean that Ronnie would have to pay compensation equalling the €32million offer made by Man City.

Yes, that Eto’o story was really, really funny. Here’s the link:
http://www.pfc-kuruvchi.com/eng/news_details.asp?newsID=602
And that is indeed what Fluminense is planning. They can’t lose. If he flops, we still probably want him, and they get what they started with. It’s worth the risk. They aren’t being quite as silly as Sao Paulo. It makes sense for them. He shows well, a bidding war opens with other European clubs and off they go to the bank.
Article 17 has become a bugbear that players like to wave at clubs, since hardly anyone really knows how the hell to implement the rule.
I would imagine that we are researching the Brazilian restaurants and nightspots in the Manchester area and making a case for Citeh as hard as we can. Milan will offer 20 million, max. Citeh’s 32 million looks great by any stretch of the imagination. It’s always fun dealing with a club that is as desperate as yours, for different reasons.Posted from

I am a lil concerned about few things..
1. Many will agree that the reason we won CL and 2 League titles, is cuz of RED (roonie, eto and deco). Now we don’t want them any more, the concerning part is, in my opinion there are no players available that are any match for either 3.
2. A strike force of Henry, Bojan and Messi is just not scary enough to me. Whoever is the mystery No. 9 better be very good…
3. Last year the first few games of the league were not broadcasted, Will that happen again this year?
4. This is not a concern, but just curious. Why do all the footballers wax their hair off?
is it a medical requirement?Posted from

Ballbeav has all the answers this morning.
JC, I think that the reason we won titles isn’t just because of RED. Our back line was stronger, and the midfield was deep and fresh. The arrival of Messi also helped a lot.
Yes, an on-form RED was very formidable. That will never happen again, so we have to move on. I, like Guardiola, like who we bring to the table. Henry as a “9″ will scare the crap out of a great many sides, because he is still one of the best strikers in the world and, given the right feeds, will produce goals. He loves playing with Hleb, so expect to see that combo a lot.
What will make Henry, Krkic and Messi scary is the addition of Hleb, Keita and Alves. Recall that last season, Abidal’s moon rocket crosses were hilarious, and Zambrotta was too concerned about getting beat on the counter to come up with any conviction.
Now, we don’t need Abidal to come up. Alves is a potent offensive force, as is Keita. Yaya can return to his proper role as holding mid without needing to come up, thus making us vulnerable to the counter. Hleb or Iniesta will keep possession on the left and Xavi, freed of having to hold back in support of Yaya, can become the offensive force that he was during the most recent glory years.
I’m not at all concerned about the absence of RED.
The broadcasts might well be messed up again this year. Hell, the season might well be messed up at the start, with the possibility of labor action by the players. Not likely, but certainly possible. Fox Soccer is making an overture toward Barca matches. Getting the rights to BarcaTV is the first step.
GolTV is the third-party broadcaster here. What messed things up last season was the re-broadcast squabble between the host broadcaster and the company who claimed to have re-broadcast rights. That got worked out (sort of) last year, but GolTV is still in the odd position of supplicant. Frankly, the only thing keeping our diet of Barca steady is that La Liga isn’t anywhere near as popular as the Premiership.
Hope that doesn’t change. If Fox Soccer takes over, you’ll NEVER again see another Clasico on free TV. Think about how many big EPL matches were broadcast in a non pay-per-view state on Fox Soccer last year.
Now, for my daily Ronaldinho screed. He met with Guardiola yesterday, and was asked if he “felt like training.” His mind wasn’t right, so he declined. Unreal. Guardiola said that at the end of the week, if his situation wasn’t resolved, that he would be expected at training with the club. Ronaldinho said not to worry, that there was no way he would be back.
Good. Best of luck to him wherever he lands.
It’s still Milan or Citeh. We would LOVE the latter, as they have met our extremely optimistic valuation of the Brazilian. Ronaldinho believes, rightly so, that Milan will be a force in Serie A this year, and will make Champions League for sure next season. Citeh will probably wind up in their usual outside-looking-in slot.
Plus Milan would offer more marketing opportunities, though Nike would be rolling in its boots at him going to an Adidas side. That’s an intense war in Europe.
Look for him to land at Milan, for about what he actually is worth, given last season, and the immense uncertainties surrounding him. Can Ancelotti get the best from him? He isn’t really needed at Milan, who already have Pirlo and Kaka as well as Pato, so they can afford to take the risk. The money they are offering will be made back in about 10 seconds in shirt sales.
I still think that Ronaldinho’s behavior has been very rotten in this case. First the “injury,” then the partying, then the getting fat, then the animus, now the belligerence. It’s like he showed up at the Nou Camp famous or something. As I have said before, much respect to R10 for all that he’s done, but he can go to hell for what he’s doing.

Anyone concerned with the number of incoming transfers for Barca B? In such a case, we are not raising our players internally. So if we have bring in players from outside only, then why not do it at first team level? So either grab them early and young or at thelast stage. Why at barca B stage?

sid,
i think the influx of Barça B transfers is due to their promotion to Segunda División B and the elevation of 7 of their players to the first team.

I’m not really worried about the moves to Barca B. Remember, in Spain youth players play against hardened veterans who physically dominated our young-but-talented team the season before last with players like Giovani, Bojan and Jeffren in it. The players being brought in have around 3/4years older than those players were.
Silva’s agent admits that we are among the teams interested but he’ll be happy to continue with Valencia… nothing new there. Not the right time to buy him IMO. He isn’t what we need at the minute. The problem is that as a winger, he does not stay nearly wide enough and on the left wing we will need width.
Thiago Neves or Arshavin would provide much more width and if a big name no.9 arrives and Henry plays on the left, either of those would accept a bench role. As Kxevin said, Silva would expect a starting place, and a starters’ wage.Ronaldinho to Milan seems a done deal. Hopefully we get €20million at the very least. Otherwise we should make him pay the difference to go to Milan instead of City.
For the €60million we should pick up from Deco, Gudjohnsen, Eto’o and Ronnie, we could probably afford Hleb(15), Henrique(8), Thiago Neves(12) and Huntelaar(25). I’d be satisfied with that business, all things considered. 4 hard working players with potential to improve and no egos anywhere to be found.
I’ll argue with anyone who thinks Huntelaar wouldn’t score a truck load of goals in our systemPosted from

re Broadcasting
I’ve been watching live games via http://www.live-footy.org. It usually has 2-10 Barca streams from which actually work 80-90% of the time. And you can watch matches all times of the day that you’ll never see on TV…(any body catch Beijing Guoan - Guangzhou Pharmaceutical or Drogheda United - Levadia Tallinn today?)
(Caveat is that the site uses various downloadable torrent softwares…which could harbor malware, though as far as I know I’ve never caught anything.)So I’m thinking of going “legal” this year…anybody have experience with BarcaTV via the official Barca site?
I paid for a UEFA pass and CL has been great on demand.
If I could watch Liga games on demand that would be perfect, as the 2 hour lunch is hard to come by.Posted from

The info available so far on Ronnie’s transfer.
€21million up front and a further €4million based on Milan’s qualification for the Champions League over the following 2 seasons. Barcelona accepted this offer as Ronaldinho has waived the 15% of the fee the player himself was due in order to complete the move.
He will have his medical tommorrow after flying to Milan at 11 in the morning. Hopefully his gut doesn’t prevent him making the move.
He will leave some amazing memories.
The classico that he owned.
The toe-poke goal in CL against Chelsea.
The way he ran through John Terry before shooting past Cech the next season.
The overhead kick against Villarreal.
The smile he used to play with.
The amazing assists he made for nearly everyone in the blaugrana shirt. Like the scoop-pass for Messi’s first or the Giuly goal against Milan in the semis.
The 35 yarder against Valencia without any backlift.
The goal he scored against Milan where he turned their entire defense with the drop of a shoulder and blasted the ball into the top corner with his left foot. That Ronnie will always be one of the best ever
