Ronaldinho becomes a Spanish citizen

By: Isaiah | August 27th, 2007

And Ronaldinho is a Spanish citizen. That’s about all there is to say about that, other than pointing out, again, that Gio Dos Santos is now free to join the first team, regardless of his citizenship.

Now all we need is Ronaldinho to actually win games for us!

A lot of talk in the press today about Chelsea thinking about matching his £85m release clause and attemoting to sign him before friday. They are also claiming that Barca would use some of this cash to buy the AWOL Dani Alves who has refused to travel to play their Champions League qualifier so he wouldn’t be cup-tied for another team. Interesting but would leave a big gap up front with Henry, Eto’o and Messi starting and only Gudjohnsen, Giovani and Bojan in the first team. It’s a little late for shopping for another forward with most people already settled in for the new season.
If his buyout clause is met we would have to do some very quick buying. Maybe someone like Rodrigo Palacio would be the only available option. Or a loan deal for Anderson(Man Utd) who is struggling for a work permit in England. I would like more time if we are forced to sell.

I think it’s absurd to think seriously about Chelsea ponying up that kind of cash for Ronnie. For those of us who don’t operate in the British Pound sphere, £85m is $171m USD or €125m or $1.8billion Mexican pesos.* That kind of money is just absurd. I mean, even for Chelski that’s absurd. They paid what, £30m for Shevchenko when he was arguably the best forward in the world? So to bankroll the kind of move it would take to get Ronnie, Abramovich would have to believe, really, that Ronnie was roughly 3 times the player Sheva is. Hmm. Even I have to admit that’s just not the case and I’ve got quite a man-crush on Ron-ron.

Supposedly (and you can read this supposition on Wikipedia), Abarmovich offered Milan £85m for Sheva in 2004, but it wasn’t accepted. So perhaps Abramovich is willing to spend that kind of money on a player, but I for one would hope that the absurd transfer money days of 2004 are over. And not just because it would keep Ronnie in Barcelona.

*I still can’t stand how the Mexican peso and the US dollar have the same currency symbol, but I guess after all these years I should just learn to deal with it.
