Thierry Henry to Barcelona

I’m not sure how I feel right now, what with Puyol out for 3 months, at least, with a knee injury. A striker when we should have signed several defenders and a DM…
Ah well.
More on this later as all the details emerged.

I’m pretty excited to see Henry vs. Van Horseyface again next season. Plus, any world class players going to Barcelona sounds great to me.

I’m surprised it’s actually happening. It’s hard to say anyone’s WORTH more than £16 million, but it seems a bit low. I expected a bit more for a player of Henry’s quality. I don’t agree with this sale for Arsenal, but Barca are getting a great deal.

Yeah, but Isaiah, Premiership prices are crazy. Darren Bent is apparently worth the same amount as Thierry Henry.
Not a bad deal, I think, although I was against it to begin with, now that it’s signed there’s not much to say about it.
(I think we are going to announce more than one signing on Monday. Apparently the Chivu and Yaya Toure deals are going well, so they haven’t forgotten about our defensive woes.)

I have mixed feelings. I mean we all know what Henry is capable of, but he just came off of an injury prone season and we haven’t seen him play in quite a while. Also a player of Henry’s profile (and ego) would hardly accept a place on the bench, and I don’t think he’s worth dropping REM for. I’ve heard plenty of talk of 4-2-4 with Ronnie dropping back into sort of a midfield role, but teams with strong midfielders will trample over us. As great as Ronnie is, he certainly doesn’t have the work rate to replace Deco in the midfield.
I can see this signing either inspiring us to great heights or turning into a complete, galactico style disaster.

Nolan: the 4-2-4 talk is crazy. No way that would work, since one of Barca’s strengths is our midfield, and completely gutting that is insane. If Ronnie drops into midfield, leaving Henry-Eto’o-Messi up front, then we have to lose two of Deco, Iniesta and Xavi in favour of two central/defensive midfielders to balance the side. That’s not worth it, IMHO.
Therefore I think the four will have to rotate.

Look, Henry’s name will sell T-shirts, so we’ll recover the money soon enough (as Madrid did with Beckham). But I have other concerns.
One, will Rijkaard have any spending money left over this year to buy the players we really need, like a couple of decent defenders?
Two, in an already unstable dressing-room, where Ronnie and Eto’o are hardly on talking terms, do we really need another monster ego like Henry’s? I agree with Nolan: we don’t need no frickin’ galacticos.
Three, the guy’s about to turn 30, for chrissakes. His game is all about speed, and he’s only going to get slower. He’s not an investment for the future.

Yes. Arsenal are a big team, but with Chelsea and Manchester United growing bigger and bigger…and with Liverpool about to start spending more wisely, Arsenal are forth best and Henry seems to have accepted this. Henry’s only chance of winning the Champion’s League with Arsenal was in Paris and I think that is what he wants. Barcelona are arguably one of the best clubs in the world and still have a great chance of completing Henry’s dream of winning the biggest prize in Europe.

Definitely a good point, Drabik. For a man who has won basically everything else, there is little left to aim for except the Champions League. He’s done basically all he could in England and now he wants a chance to win the CL. I understand that from his point-of-view (but of course I am quite seriously biased here), but from OUR point-of-view, it seems somewhat absurd to pay for him.
Though, as Rupert points out, it’s all about money and he will contribute so I guess why not. And now that he’s here, it’s time to see what we can do with him to better the team, rather than pout. Yaya Toure is here and now Thierry Henry, and possibly Chivu.
What concerns me are the reports that Chivu is coming for 12 million euros plus Giuly. That seems a bit absurd and would deprive us of our backup for Messi, who has shown himself to be somewhat injury prone. That could be a disaster in the making, really and, were Messi to get hurt, would force Eto’o and Henry into a partnership that might not produce as many goals as you’d expect. (And while Bojan and Gio Dos Santos are both viable replacements, they aren’t proven commodities yet)

Isaiah: I share your concerns about Giuly, but it’s understandable that he wants to go somewhere he would actually start most games, instead of being benched in favour of a guy 10 years his junior. We just have to hope that Bojan and Dos Santos live up to their promise, I guess, since they’re going to be part of the first team next season.
