UEFA Champions League Draw – Friday
By: Isaiah | July 31st, 2008
So tomorrow is a big day in European club football: it’s the Champions League third round qualifier draw. Win your two-legged affair and you’re in the group stage. It’s the first time in a while that Barça have had to enter this part of the competition, but we’re there and we’re doing it without Messi, who has jetted off to the Olympics.
Laporta seems worried that the team won’t get into the group stage without Messi, which, of course, is silly to most Barça fans. We’re not known for our lack of faith or expectation, that’s for sure. But imagine, for a moment, what Laporta is thinking: Oh crap, what if we fail!? I’m soooo screwed! After all, he didn’t fair so hot in the vote of no confidence and a major failure at the very beginning of the season after bringing in a new coach, getting rid of two popular players (Deco and Ronnie), maybe a third (Eto’o), and spending nearly €100million on bringing in new faces would certainly spell the end for Laporta’s reign. Laport and Txiki would certainly curl up in little balls rocking back and forth while their assistants attempt to clean them up for the resignation press conference…
Here is who we might get matched up against:
FC Sheriff (MDA) OR AC Sparta Praha (CZE)
Drogheda United FC (IRL) OR FC Dynamo Kyiv (UKR)
PFC Levski Sofia (BUL)
SK Slavia Praha (CZE)
Galatasaray AS (TUR)
FC İnter Bakı (AZE) OR FK Partizan (SRB)
Vitória SC (POR)
NK Domžale (SVN) OR NK Dinamo Zagreb (CRO)
Beitar Jerusalem FC (ISR) OR Wisla Kraków (POL)
R. Standard de Liège (BEL)
FC Twente (NED)
Tampere United (FIN) OR FC Artmedia Petržalka (SVK)
Aalborg BK (DEN) OR FK Modriča (BIH)
SK Brann (NOR) OR FK Ventspils (LVA)
Anorthosis Famagusta FC (CYP) OR SK Rapid Wien (AUT)
The scores are in from the first leg of the second qualifying round, so I’ve bolded the teams currently winning their ties. Draws are italicized (and by the way they are listed in order of who plays home first if you want to know who is in charge via away goals, etc). Atleti is also in this draw, but they can’t face off against Barça, so there was no point to listing them as an option.
Who do you think would be the worst draw for Barcelona out of this group? I’m going with Galatasaray, then Dynamo Kyiv then Slavia Praha. I just don’t ever fancy meeting up with a Turkish team with everything on the line.
Let’s hear your thoughts!

didnt we play levski in the group stages a couple years back? we crushed them. we had already clinched the group by the time we played them the second time, i think.
i agree, prague, kiev and galatasaray are ones to avoid. not that i know any of their players at the moment. but i will tell you what, i sometimes have the feeling that these draws are….massaged….a little bit. it is not in uefa’s interest to have barcelona eliminated from the CL. we will play a minnow. ife we don’t, well that sucks but i guess it restores faith in the draws…

Yeah, be beat the pants off of Levski Sofia in the 06/07 Group Stage, 5-0 and 0-2.

Well allow me to say this; if well don’t pass the qualifying rounds then their is np founded expectation to win anything else. And I’m glad that messi is gone. This will help with what guardiola said regarding not depending solely on messi . Though these preview games have been good that will been the real test. Time for Henry, Bojan and Eto’o to score some goals. Then we will see.

Doesn’t matter. We’re getting in whoever’s ass that comes our way. The only competition could come from Galatasaray, because they’re exceptional at playing for a 0-0 draw away, then going for it at home. But even there….I just can’t see them beating us. And we shouldn’t need Messi for any of ‘em.

Here’s a good article on Goal.com detailing our start so far under the Guardiola era:

Good read if you have a couple min.

fyi, the americans are heartbroken at not being able to see messi in NY/Chicago. and profit for barcelona might dip. argh.

Not this American. I want to see Keita, Alves and Hleb. Wouldn’t mind seeing some Henry, as well. It’s funny….I love what Messi does for the club and I appreciate him, but I’m just not that big a fan of his. Call me crazy.
That Goal.com piece sounds like a lot of what we’ve been saying in our pre-season match dissections. Maybe they read this blog, too.

a compliment to one is not an insult to another. seeing the other barca boys is always a treat, but messi is…messi. lol.

As a ticket holder for the Chicago game, I confess to suffering a bit of disappointment, but a healthy dose of Henry, Xavi, Keita and Alves will be a nice elixir.

Are we selling Eto’o or not???

True, Mat. I’ve seen lots of in-person Messi. But I’m just a lot more excited about what the other players represent as regards a fully mature Barca. That is, a side that doesn’t need a superstar to still be potent and exceptional. I hope that Guardiola’s system works. If it does, we should be able to keep on rolling regardless of injuries, African Cup of Nations, whatever.
Dante, Sport says that Roma have tabled a formal 25 million bid for Eto’o. Now, Sport is about as reliable as Paris buses the on the Friday before a holiday weekend, but Roma are definitely after a world-class striker. How much longer can Totti go for them?
What Sport is saying is that Roma’s 25 million isn’t far off our 30 million asking price, so it should be easy to reach a deal. And further, they have apparently offered Eto’o 6 million per year plus incentives. Eto’o is asking for 8 million per year plus incentives. He’s crazy, and the speculation is that Roma’s world-class status and Champions League football will make a deal possible.
It has to happen fast, as we have to submit Champions League rosters by August 5. I believe the rules are that if Eto’o is on the roster, he’s officially dead to other Champions League clubs.
Now, I wouldn’t place too much credence in this, as it comes from Sport. But if other grownup outlets begin buzzing about it, look out.
Details over at Pep’s Most Excellent Blog:

Right Upper V, I’ll be sitting in Section 239, sporting the new keeper’s shirt. If you see me, say yo. I look kinda Thuramesque.

I’ll admit that I am suffering a bit of disappointment from the lack of Messi on the tour, but it is tempered by the fact that I’ve already seen Messi in person twice (the last time FCB played Red Bulls and also already this summer when USA played Argentina). Still, I wanted to see the Messiah once again because, as ajani put it, he’s…Messi.
I am currently most excited to see Alves play, though watching Henry in person could be awesome as well. And I better get to see Eto’o, dammit. This will be one mad fan if Eto’o leaves.
I’m currently most ticked about the Olympic TV schedule, though. What’s up with half the world being on such a different time schedule that they broadcast things at 3am over here? That’s just nuts! Thursday, August 7 is Argentina – Ivory Coast and it starts at 7:30am…dammit!

It’s not the 7:30am that bothers me since I’m definitely awake by then on a Thursday, but it’s the fact that my job starts at 8am…boo.
