Welcoming Seydou Keita and Gerard Pique

By: Isaiah | May 29th, 2008

Because I was away when they were officially signed and announced, here is a double post on our two newest members: Seydou Keita and Gerard Pique. Obviously most of you have heard of them — in fact, I’d be surprised if anyone reading this blog hadn’t heard of them, though that would suggest Kevin and I are reaching a very wide audience — but I’m going to doe quick profiles of them anyway.

I’ll start with Keita, who was first to be announced. His contract was purchased from Sevilla for his buyout clause of €14million euros and then he was signed to a 4-year deal. That means his contract runs through June 2012. His buyout clause has been reported at €90million, so it’s pretty damned unlikely that he’ll be leaving before his contract runs out unless the club wants him to go. But enough of the economics and on to who Keita is. He’s a 28-year old, 6-foot, Malian international midfielder who has previously played in France and also, obviously, for Sevilla. His on-the-pitch role tends to vacillate between defensive and attacking central midfielder, meaning that he brings a lot of versatility to the squad’s “engine room.” He provides a little bit more attacking capability than Yaya Toure (and yes, I realize that Toure is capable of attacking, but has been held back by tactics, but I still believe Keita is more of an attacker), but a lot more defensive capability than Deco. While he is neither as good as Toure at defense nor as good as Deco at offense, he provides a lot of much-needed depth. The best possible outcome is Keita being able to come off of the bench for anyone in the midfield or starting for them if they’re injured, but there is also a legitimate fear of him being incapable of playing with Toure, something could cause issues with both the squad and my heart.

Keita is talented, there’s no doubt about it, but he’s not the youngest player and he’s not the most attack-minded. Of the four goals he scored for Sevilla, though, I remember 3 of them being laser beams basically from the parking lot. Dude has a canon. Like a damn BFG or something. Perhaps if he starts bombing them in from range, it will force defense to step out a bit, giving our mighty mites a few more holes to worm their way through. That and it could provide Toure with the ability to step up and take his own broadsides at the net without having 7 defenders blocking his way.

All-in-all, I’m still on the fence about Keita, but I think he has tremendous potential and I’m willing to buy into the whole thing if he’s capable of co-existing rather than replacing. If he’s a replacement for Deco, he better have telepathic abilities with Messi and the capability to run into the corners while the front line shifts around. If he’s a replacement for Toure, I will need at least 4 trophies next year or it’s off with someone’s head. Period.

Now to Pique. 21 years old, 6′4″, born in Catalonia*, raised as an FC Barcelona member, played in the youth team, moved to England, ended up back in Spain on loan at Zaragoza where he had a good year, returned to ManU and idled on the bench most of the time before making the move to Barcelona for an undisclosed fee somewhere around €5million. He scores goals with his head because he’s gigantor and I like that. In fact, I’m enamored with the possibilities because what if (and imagine this in your mind, right now) when we got a corner kick, the other team shat itself instead of waiting patiently to outjump our tiny child-like attackers? That would mean we could have our cake and freakin’ eat it too because we wouldn’t need a legion of tall, ugly brute forwards like Ibrahimovic! Yay! The beautiful game wins again! Another wonderful thing is that when they get a corner kick or a solid cross into the middle, we don’t have to shit ourselves because we’ve got a 6′4″ behemoth of a man taking names and handing out free passes to the infirmary.

So, as you can tell, I’m very excited about Pique’s return to the fold. I don’t hold it against him that he left for England because I would have done the same. In fact, so would you. In a perfect world, he never would have left, but it’s not a perfect world and I think the time away has done him some good (it has, at the very least, kept us from having to worry about him developing or not and even if we paid a bunch to get him back, if it turns out he’s half the player I think he can be, it’s well worth it).

*don’t yell at me if you think it should be spelled Catalunya. I don’t know or care about the politics behind spelling things certain ways.

There are a few good rightbacks out there though.
Dani Alves, Sevilla – probably the best attacking fullback in the world
Maicon Douglas, Inter – very close to Dani; doesn’t score as many goals but also is good in the air.
Rafinha, Schalke – the third Brazilian fullback who would be a reasonable option, very good crossing
Backary Sagna, Arsenal – better defensively than most but not as good going forward, probably expensive
Carlos Diogo, Zaragoza – would be a backup in a top class team, probably not at the same level as the rest
After that i’m kinda stuck. Hopefully it would be one of the first two

I’m trusting that our braintrust will do the right thing, and nab a quality right winger. They haven’t screwed up yet. You could even argue that they had the talent on the pitch this season, and but for injuries, incompatibilities, etc.

There were a few obvious clunkers, such as Gudjohnsen. But really, on paper, who wouldn’t have tapped us to be the best collection of talent in the world this past season? Problem was, we weren’t the best team.

Some speculate that a coaching change, to more of a builder personality (such as Guardiola) was all that was needed, that it wasn’t necessary to begin offloading talent. Just replace the folks who want to leave, and move on. Valid argument, but we’ll never know (I think….we might, depending upon what happens in the market with our big three).

I just know that they know more about the talent available and the money that we have, and how difficult someone might be to deal with, than I do. So I’m putting it in their hands.

None of which, mind you, stops me from speculating. :D

We HAVE to get Dani Alves. Here’s another complexity. If Ronaldo does what is now expected, and signs with the Evil Empire, we will need a defensive right back of Zambrotta’s quality to mark that little weasel off of the pitch, as Zamby did during the Champions League matches.

What I do look forward to is having him come in and unsettle that locker room. Imagine he and Robinho in the same room? Suh-weet!

I see the potential Diogo signing as a sub. Our real right back wishes are Alves, and I think that we are proceeding in that direction, unless Del Nido scuttles everything again, as he did with Chelsea last season. And don’t forget that their 35 million offer was higher than anything we’re going to be willing to pay.

Tell you something else. Alves has said that he has played his last match for Sevilla, and that he’s gone. Wonder if that is playing a part in the negotiations?

since the first 3 are brazilians, why not go to brazil and find another right back?
n how cum there’s no official statement about Zamby’s depature on the Barca site?

@ballbeav: Laporta would smear Eto’o because he needs to justify all his moves to the supporters with the upcoming no-confidence vote. Eto’o got hit with some splatter from the turd sandwich they threw at Ronnie, but that alone wouldn’t build the case to sell one of the most productive strikers in Spain, a player who was an integral part of the successful Laporta years. So, Laporta is throwing anything he can at Sammy.

@Kxevin: I really agree that Alves is almost a necessity, even for that slightly inflated price. He would help in the back, and open up space for Messi on the right. A Messi-Alves combo up the right flank would be deadly.

I really hope Hleb isn’t a Xavi replacement, and Keita isn’t a Toure replacement.

Firstly, I also don’t want to see Hleb being added to the squad, especially if we are paying the amount be talked about in the press. He’s not even nearly worth it. Look at Joao Moutinho’s goal for Portugal v Georgia yesterday for a better alternative to Hleb. And he scores tap-ins in the box too. Hleb has 1 goal in 12 over the past 3 seasons. Moutinho has 1 in 6.
Giovani’s dad Zizinho has said that Giovani wants to join Juande Ramos at Tottenham. The fee being reported in Sport is a meager €8million. That is ridiculous. If we are to sell him surely he is worth more than that. Txiki and Laporta need their heads checked if they miss out on the big bucks that are in the English game and sell him for anything less than €15million. He has so much potential and actually has potential marketing value also.
You really have to look at it in terms of the replacement cost of that sort of player. I don’t think that you can replace Giovani with €8million. The only thing that I can of is that they rate Gai Assulin very highly and think that he has just as much ability as Giovani.
It looks almost certain that Martin Caceres will join us soon. “I am ready to play at Barca. My dream is to play in the Champions League and at Barca I will be able to do that. And I aim to win titles. I hope I can play there. I hope that we are close to resolving this situation. Villarreal have been determined in asking for the 20million euro buy-out clause and we are going to see what happens, but I have faith that everything will be resolved.”
I would like if Txiki made some declarations about exactly who is not needed. If someone would just take the dead-weight like Gudjohnsen, Oleguer, Ezquerro etc., from us so we can move on.
I also want some attacking signings made to ease my troubled mind. Maybe they want to find homes for Ronnie and Deco etc., before signing anyone but if they don’t sell them until after the Euros then most of the talent will probably be snapped up and we’ll end up paying over the odds for whats left on the market.

Yeah, for 8 million we are getting completely ripped off. A thought his hat-trick in his last match could’ve raised his price a bit.

To be honest, i would be happy to just release Guddie, Oleguer, Ezquerro and Jorquera. Their fees wouldn’t even be worth the negotiating time.

Galliani is still saying that they probably won’t sign Milan. Seems they really want Eto’o though. I’m starting to think that Ronnie might stay. Do you guys think that if Pep can bring back the best of him, will he stay for a few more years? It might just bring back his love for the club.

And look at these fantastic photos pep managed to find at fcbtransfers.com:

If that doesn’t doesn’t make you feel all jittery inside, nothing will.

I gotta say, I’m not crazy about Alves. He’s a terrific player, no doubt about it. But everything I’ve read about him suggests he’s a prima donna — and we’ve had quite enough of those in recent seasons, no? In his first season at the helm, Guardiola needs to build a strong, united team (Keita and Pique are good additions toward that end), and doesn’t need to be burdened with a bunch of selfish egomaniacs. If it’s true that there are no takers for Ronnie … I shudder to think about it.

So Del Nido wants 35 million, we’ve offered (I read somewhere) around 30 million. 32 will probably be the magic number. Overpriced? Dunno. In terms of today’s salaries and what he is potentially worth to the side, nope. (Isaiah will feel otherwise, however. :D )

Bobby G., EVERY modern player has some prima donna in him. Find me one who is completely selfless and I’ll find you somebody who hasn’t, and who never will reach their potential. I don’t care who you look at….yes, even Messi….there’s some prima donna there.

The real question is are those tendencies destructive? They don’t seem to be. Alves had a very good season this past one, despite being mightily vexed at having been forced to stay at Sevilla, rather than transferring to Chelsea, thanks to Del Nido’s hardball negotiating tactics. I haven’t heard about him being “injured” then going out and partying all night, showing up out of shape, and stuff such as that, either. :D

In many ways, we and Sevilla each have the other over a barrel. They know that we need a quality right winger. We know that Alves is determined (more than last season) to leave Sevilla. The coach is already proceeding as if he is gone. Seems like a deal can, and should be reached.

8 million is STEALING Dos Santos. I’m not the biggest fan, but I still know value for Euro, and 8 million for a player with an up side such as his….I don’t know what we’re thinking with that one.

I noticed the Ronaldinho rumors. As I’ve said before, it wouldn’t be a bad thing if he were forced to stay. It would mean that nobody wanted him because he’s damaged goods, and he would have to play his ass off to make that perception go away. Good for us.

But there again, that’s AC Milan playing hardball with us. They’d take him at the right price. We think (as does Del Nido with Alves) that he’s worth more than what we’ve been offered.

We’ll see Deco and Eto’o find happy homes long before Ronaldinho, because of the dual complications of our value of him and his salary demands. Combine that with a crappy last season, and you can see why people aren’t banging down our door with mega-offers.

I also think that potentially, Guardiola is sitting on a powderkeg if certain players stay. Rijkaard’s “self-training” regimen seems a far cry from what Guardiola wants to institute, not to mention all of the “team togetherness” stuff. The hope is that he will be able to say to the players “You’ve seen what I did with a floundering B side. We’re in the same boat. Do you want to keep squandering your potential, or man the hell up?”

Okay, I DO know what we’re thinking with Dos Santos. Isn’t he off contract next season? I know we’ve tried to sign him long-term, and he isn’t interested. So it’s a question of getting something, rather than losing him on a free transfer next season. Or am I crazy?

You’re crazy. There’s no way that Gio is worth €8million and nothing more if Caceres is worth 15 or even 20. No way in hell. I’m sorry, but I don’t buy that. It’s just that Barcelona has the cash to pay big transfer fees, so we do and then we accept smaller ones on the other end. But if Spurs want him this year, let them splash the cash. We know they’ve got it, so whatever. If Gio wants to play for us, then let him sign a long-term contract with a good paycheck. If he wants to be a mercenary, let him warm the bench for a year as a backup. Whatever.

But, do we get money for him now (admittedly not what he’s worth), or lose him on a free transfer? Dos Santos wants to get paid. And I daresay that had he had the season that Krkic had, none of this would be an issue. He’d be signed, sealed and delivered.

And Henry is definitely staying, after a chat-fest with Guardiola. Good news (for some, not all). :D

And they’re saying that Zambrotta’s transfer was worth 8million as well, which is pretty good, I guess. Not what you’d hope in today’s transfer market, but about what one should expect because Zambrotta wanted to go and Barcelona wanted him gone.

Y look for more, when it`s right here to be found

I wud say, if and when we get Dani alves, we have more than enough for the squad. While Silva or caceres wud be a welcome addition, but not crucial(Caceres instead of Pique wud have been awesome). Too much influx wud necessitate exit of some really good players. Even if Ronaldinho goes, exit of Eto`o seems like a bad idea to me. Similarly, signing of Van der Vaart, hleb, Lucho etc. wud only add more of the same. We have got front line with lot of depth, good midfielders and if we sign Alves, then a pretty good backline too.
Though it ain`t happening, Pls change the goalkeeper. Someone better than Valdes.

N Kxevin, nice bringing out two sides of the story. We are pissed off with Del Nido and Milan for exactly the opposite reasons concerning the two Brazilians.

Something tells me that we are almost done. Pique, Keita, Hleb, Caceres and Alves. Not a bad day’s work. Leaving are Thuram, Zambrotta, Ezquerro, Gudjohnsen. On the “probable” list are Dos Santos, Deco, Eto’o and Ronaldinho. I think that Oleguer is staying, lord knows why.

I think that the moves/sales are less for talent and more for team chemistry. But that’s just me speculating. Note that all of them (even Alves) are good to excellent role players. Alves is the biggest “star” on the list.

In the States I’m fairly certain that Oleguer would, indeed, be given a position within the club. Maybe as a trainer or as a figurehead “director of so-and-so”…fan relations isn’t a bad idea. He could stir up trouble with the boixos nois or something.
