We’re the best of La Liga… but you already knew that, didn’t you?
By: Ade C. | October 27th, 2009So, in case we didn’t have enough of the sweet taste of triumph with our smashing 6-1 victory over Zaragoza this weekend, last night there were not one, but two award ceremonies for Spanish Football.
In the first one, the official Liga Profesional de FĂştbol Awards, FC Barcelona was *this* close to walking off with all the awards. See for yourself:
LFP Awards
Liga BBVA Champion: F.C. Barcelona Guardiola couldn't make it to the ceremony, so he sent Laporta and his suit and waistcoat in his place...
Best Player of the Liga BBVA: Leo Messi (F.C. Barcelona)
Best Manager of the Liga BBVA: Pep Guardiola (F.C. Barcelona)
Best Goalkeeper of the Liga BBVA: Iker Casillas (Real Madrid)
Best Defender of the Liga BBVA: Daniel Alves (F.C. Barcelona)
Best Midfielder of the Liga BBVA: Xavi (F.C. Barcelona)
Best Attacking Midfielder of the Liga BBVA: Iniesta (F.C. Barcelona)
Best Striker of the Liga BBVA: Messi (F.C. Barcelona)
Best New Player of the Liga BBVA: Sergio Busquets (F. C. Barcelona)
BBVA Award to Fair Play in the Liga BBVA: ValerĂłn (Deportivo)

Alright, I admit I was a bit baffled to see Dani get the prize before Piqué or Puyol, but what the hell, he deserves it, for his untiring running up and down the pitch, his murderous tackles on anyone not wearing blaugrana, and his fantastically inaccurate free kicks! (I do like him, I really do)
So, we have everything but the goalkeeper and the fair-play… but wait! Sport newspaper (and Real Madrid aficionados) Marca gave out their own awards last night, which they modestly call “the Oscars of Spanish football”. And who was given the Zamora, the award to the best goalkeeper (or, at least, the one who had to pick the ball from the back of his net the least amount of times)? That’s right, our own VĂctor ValdĂ©s, with only 31 goals to blame him for last season!
Take this, Casillas! My award is bigger than your award...

So, we do have everything! The classiest manager, the most talented, shortest players, the most undervalued goalie, the most meaningless awards… whatever will be next?

Most are deserved except Busquets.

Best defenders: Puyol or PiquĂ©, Alves is not quite as good as they are when it comes to DEFENDING, he’s more like a right midfielder^^
Haha, nice picture from VV
Guess it must have been hard for Marca to award him with the trophy

I could think of a few young players who could have also deserved this award, Ryan McManus, but Busi has had a good season with us, so it’s not entirely undeserved in his case, I think.
And yes, Helge, Dani is not at his best defending (or taking FKs), but with Xavi and Iniesta so obviously in place for the Midfielder awards, I suppose the judges felt they had to give Alves *something*… and I can just imagine the effort it took the people from Marca to give the award to VV and not call Iker in tears!
The best fans, K? Really? I thought that went without saying! Look at us!

Sorry, K, all six of us were too excited and giddy with triumph to make a proper Zaragoza review. We promise to contain our enthusiasm next time. The Copa Del Rey preview is coming, though…
And jordi, I don’t know whether PiquĂ© was elegible for Best New Player; after all, he made several appearances with the ManU first team, so I suppose that counted as his debut season.Posted from

Not sure why Valdes didn’t make it?

To be honest, elisa, I think that Casillas *is* the better goalkeeper, a feeling shared by about 90% of Spanish people… to each their own, I guess!
