You said what now?! (ElCapitan Edition)

By: Iggy | September 7th, 2009

Some of you might recognize this man:

He is known to us as ElCapitan, his mother named him Carles, and his father gave him the name Puyol, and opposing forwards know him as “oh not that guy again”. He is a symbol of our glorious team and is known all over the footy world for his dedication, work ethic, and general ballstothewall badassery. This is good, what’s not so good is the following: His contract renewal is frozen!

OH NO!!

The word going around the club is that ElCapitan is happy with the money he’s being offered (we already know he’s not a mercenary), but he is hesitant to sign on for additional years (his contract expires at the end of this season) because LordPep doesn’t consider him a 100% starter at CB. This is a prickly situation for everyone at the club, from Laporta to Guardiola and every member in between. On one hand, the fans (myself included) would see getting rid of Puyol as a cardinal sin (personally I see it right up there with pissing on the club seal), on the other hand we all know that Puyol is giving eleventybillion percent every game, but maybe (and I shudder to think this may be true) there are players out there who can do more for the team than our captain. Obviously Guardiola needs to make it painfully obvious to the entire squad that He and only He is in charge of the locker room, but I sincerely think that Puyol should be playing every minute when he is healthy. As for Laporta, as a president who has bragged on and on about making a team based on canteranos, letting Puyol get away would be a terrible blow to his legacy. Of course people can, and will, argue that all good things must end and Puyol is getting slow, and he’s not young anymore, and he can’t jump as high, and he’s not as sharp, and he’s not as OH SHUT IT!!! if we let him go it will be a worse mistake than keeping Ronaldinho for the 07-08 season. I say we give ElCapitan what he wants and we’re all happy.

Hasta la Victoria! Barça!!

Didn’t he (or his agent maybe) just recently come out and say that he would consider a move to AC Milan next season? I am sure I read something like that…

Nope, it was his agent. And all the agent said was that Puyol likes AC Milan. No biggie. Agents pull that sort of stuff all the time.

It would be uncharacteristical of Guardiola to let him go. Eto, Sylvinho, Ronaldihno, Deco, Hleb, and Gudjohnsen all had a reason to be sold, loaned, or not renewed. For someone as loyal and hardworking as Puyol to not be renewed would send a bad message to the Barca locker room. It’s not going to happen. I promise.

I think so too, but this wouldn’t be a Guardiola choice, Puyol and his agent have frozen the negotiations, not the club

Chelsea fans complain that referee mistakes cost them a place in the cl final. Some are uttering the words “fix” and “conspiracy”. Chelsea coach Guus Hiddink didn’t agree that it was a fix, but could still “understand” the emotional spillover after the final in London.
What utter nonsense. The victory over two legs by Barcelona was fully deserved and justice was done. This, notwithstanding the mistakes by the referee, now seen as the antichrist by supporters, may have committed. If there was a conspiracy, what was the referee doing sending off Barcelona’s Abidal for a foul he did not commit, with 25 minutes still to go? Was that too, part of some antichelsea master plan engineered out of Geneva by UEFA?
The truth is Chelsea screwed up, by not mustering the courage to attack Barcelona even at home, and keep attacking them after taking a 9 minute 1-0 lead. Even against a weekend Barcelona side, Chelsea never looked like a home team, trying to exploit their home advantage. They played with one striker against a second string Barcelona defense, and even substituted him for a defender on 72 minutes. Is this what some people mean by substance over style? Actually its not substance, but cowardness. The team with the substance and the style was Barcelona, who despite being away from home, despite fielding a weakened side, and despite being down a man for the last 25 minutes, attacked and attacked, with gallantry and astonishing self belief, until their reward came.

They deserved everything they got…as do Chelsea. Especially a couple of their petulant players, Drogba and Ballack, whose tantrums inventing their spleen at the referee were about as courageous as their team’s tactics.

There are better central defenders out there than Puyol if we are honest though. He gives 110% every game but is not the best defender in the world.

Of course Puyol will stay. And for the next year or two he will start every game when he’s healthy. Afterwards, (ahem, ceteris paribus) I see him still getting quite regular playing time.

i cannot understand why this is a problem. for me puyol is definitive starter and should be as long as that crazy guy can move. he may not have the talent with the ball that chygrynkiy, pique and marquez have but i feel that when puyi is on the field his prescence is felt so much that like xavi he makes the people around him better. if he doesn’t sign a new contract it will be a disaster
