Hey, whoa, real footy, a.k.a. Confederations Cup gets decided today

By: Kevin | June 27th, 2009

So, a funny thing happened on the way to the Spain Invitational. La Furia Roja lost to a scrappy United States side, courtesy of a most excellent assist from one Sergio Ramos, and some matador defense.

Which means they’re playing for third place. Some say they dumped the match to keep from having to lug around this ugly-ass trophy. Hmmm.

And then we have the final, that same scrappy United States side, vs Brazil who, just when they were looking lively and on the verge of jogaing some bonito, uglied about against South Africa until getting bailed out by a Dani Alves free kick (that didn’t look like it deflected off anything, says my rippin’ good high-def ESPN feed).

What will happen? Most of the free world predicted a poleaxing by Spain, and the 2-0 scoreline was rather surprising, for a side that had, frankly, stank out the tournament. Yet here they are in the final, a time during which anything can happen.

So go ahead and comment, why don’t ya?

The internet never lies, vj. You’ve been living in the U.S. this whole time and you just never realized it. :P

Somehow I knew VJ must be Indian (emoticon). For the record, I’m white, or, as my black friends call me, a white oppressin’ MFer (Dave Chappelle did that joke and one of my friends used it once on me and dammit if it didn’t stick). I had a strong hunch that Kevin was white until a couple posts ago, and now I wonder if Isaiah (surely a white name…or…) is or not. I was just thinking, wow, I could very well be the only white guy here. It’s not like Barca is an English team.

    One-minute speeches:

So it’s been several hours and still the Keirrison deal is not closed.
Also it appears that the Zhirkov -> Chelsea deal is all but closed, which I hate.
Everybody who’s talking about Arshavin coming here should stop, that’s just too silly.
Is Caceres really leaving? Damn; we hardly knew ye…why the hell did we buy him anyway if we chose Yaya over him? He was almost a bigger flop than Hleb. In fact, if Hleb stays and he leaves, Hleb won’t be declared a flop and Caceres will be the flop.
If Hleb stays he’ll be all man next season, if still essentially a second-stringer. Just wait.
I don’t think Villa will come if Eto’o’s sale isn’t made to finance it.
Can’t we sell Eto’o to Inter or Bayern instead of Man City? I know Inter was interested and Bayern could certainly use a guy like him.
Guardiola has always been interested in a target man, which for me, is not Villa. Who’s he after? Nobody we’ve been talking about surely.

And this makes 491 comments I believe.

Isaiah, I think I remember somewhere along the line we agreed you’d award the person who posts a 500th comment. Something about a triplete shirt?

I’m not going to comment on the eto’o matter, enoug has been said. Let’s wait for whats to come..

another thing: kaka gets number 8 at the EE, gago who used to wear that number now gets 5, valdano said he asked the board for that number and “that is something that us Argentinians understand very well, it’s a very special number for us” what does he mean?

The Argentinean #5, especially a Boca Juniors #5 (which Gago was) or a defensive midfielder/deep lying playmaker has a lot of history and holds a lot of prestige back in Buenos Aires. As far as my memory/life goes Redondo wore it for many years and recently during the latest Boca Juniors dynasty phase (early 2000’s) it was Gago, Banega, and now Battaglia. Hopefully somebody more enlightened than me an shed some other examples…

Duh. Before Gago and Banega (who took it over when Battaglia went to Villareal) it was Battaglia. The NT #5 I remember though is Redondo (who I dont know if you heard, also happened to play for a certain team who wear white).

I think you’re right about Hleb, Alexinho. At least we know that he can’t get any worse, right?

My understanding of the Caceres thing is that it would be a loan to Zaragoza rather than a sale.

We will have to wait to, as the phrase from “Stranger In A Strange Land” goes, grok the Ero’o situation in its fullness.

We should give Hleb another chance.. He can be much much better.. a good pre-season should do wonders..

I think the ball is pretty much in Eto’o’s court.. If he doesn’t renew, he’ll be shipped out this season..

But can a player really be sold against his will? Eto’o could dig in and stay. Or we could find a deal, with him or some other club.

My sole sense of urgency is to have this resolved, one way or the other, by training camp/pre-season time.

There are also the matters of seeing us some young’uns on this go-round, right?

We can by all means, bench his @$$ back to the stone age.. should pretty much do the trick..

And I don’t believe its against his will.. no such player and/or his agent would do such a gimmick if they want to stay.. Remember last season’s end when he said he was angry and wanted to leave.. he’s been itching to leave since Pep arrived.. Couldn’t do so because of lack of offers.. which might be a possibility next season..

Laporta has managed this situation admirably.. NOT!
