Abidal signs with Barcelona

By: Isaiah | June 28th, 2007

This may be a bit premature to announce as a certified fact, but according to 3 Spanish press sources (Marca, Sport, and most notably El Pais) an agreement has been reached and signed between Olympique Lyonnais and Barcelona over the transfer of left back Eric Abidal. While the Lyon fans might be a bit unhappy about this, I certainly am. With Puyol’s knee injury and Gio’s recent departure, we had an ever-growing hole in defense that has now been well and truly aided. Perhaps how we go about getting players from smaller clubs like Lyon isn’t very nice, but at this moment I can’t really care since I want to take down Real Madrid and one of the things that was going to stop us from doing that was the lack of a truly world class left back. And despite what some may say about him, he’s definitely well up there in terms of talent so bienvenue to the club, Monsieur Abidal.

Instead of the Dutch, it’s a French invasion…how things changed…

According to French media, the transfer fee is around 15 million euros. Do you have any more details on that? And I think I read somewhere that he’s undergoing his medical tomorrow?

Anyway, I know I was quite harsh with Abidal in my post, but it’s just frustrating to see OL players resort to these tactics every summer. I feel for them, as having a president like Aulas isn’t easy, but at the same time, who other than Aulas will watch out for Lyon’s interests?

Anyway, if the transfer does go through officially, I hope he does really well for you guys.

BTW, you have an awful lot of Monaco alumni in your ranks.

The transfer fee is somewhere in that range, but it could be as low as 14million. So far no real details about it have come out, so we’ll have to wait for that.

Yeah, Monaco is a nice feeder team…ha. In fact, for years Barca has drawn from French teams, whether they be French or foreign players (Ronaldinho, anyone?).

I’m sure your situation sucks, Inara, but the whole system is flawed and aimed at making the big clubs bigger and forcing the little teams to become props for those big clubs. And this coming from a guy who loves Barcelona…
