It’s official. We’re ripped apart, a.k.a. “Big news of ‘black sheep’”
By: Kevin | April 9th, 2008The news just keeps coming hot and heavy in Blaugrana land. This just in, to be filed in the “Duh” file:
The team’s economic president (and former acting president), Xavier Sala Martin, says that the locker room is split. Further, that some players are “separate” from the rest, and basically do whatever in the hell they want. The club disguises this ostracism by saying that the player is “injured.”
He didn’t name any names and defended Laporta’s efforts to fix the locker room rift. In a quote, he added that “It is unjust that for one, two or three of them they have so many days off and that out of 60 training sessions they only attend around 20 or so.”
“It is unfair to say that Mr. Laporta is not acting. These players do not work, they are doing nothing, they are not playing for weeks, not working and spend a long time out with injuries and the like. But these players are separate and are isolated from the squad.”
Prima facie, this is just a club insider whining about the players. But let’s look a bit closer. Martin is in the Laporta camp. Some (including me) are thinking that the real deal behind this statement, which couldn’t have been more poorly timed, is that it’s an official word from management that there’s more than one “black sheep,” and that those people are screwing up the world. And expect big names to be off-loaded this summer.
Wow. I just don’t know who or what to believe any longer, and it’s just killing me. Rijkaard is calling for unity, saying that neither he nor Ronaldinho are going anywhere. Italian papers are saying that Ronaldinho is all but an AC Milan player. Henry is gone. Deco is gone. Or they’re not. The locker room is fine. Or it isn’t.
You really, really have to wonder if, with all of this flying through the air, if there will be any silver in our future that isn’t purchased as a trinket in a jewelry shop. It explains a lot, such as the look of the bench whenever we see it on the telly. There’s no unity, with everyone just sitting there with their heads jammed down into their jackets.
And that lack of unity carries over to the pitch, where nobody seems to be on the same page, and the frustrating, erratic performances that drive us all crazy looks set to continue.
But here’s the real question: Is all this stuff rubbish?

Haha, just saw the replay.. that goal was funny. Basically, the German defense blocked a great shot and thought they had cleared it, but the ball actually landed (after flying quite high) in the box… at Toure’s feet.

Halftime thoughts…
Missed the first 15 and from what I’ve heard and read it wasn’t pretty. Kuranyi should have a hat trick after the first 21 minutes? Haven’t looked incisive up front and the back four look super suspect today. Somehow we’re up 1-0 at the break instead of being down 3-0.
What was fan favorite TH14 doing during our goal? Did he think the goal was going to fall over, so he decided to stand there and hold the post when there was a 50:50 jump ball inside the 6 yard box? I will say though he had a great touch to start Toure on the break for the only goal of the half. But standing there, holding the post is inexcusable. Great ball by Bojan! But then, right before break, he had two opportunities to stretch the lead and failed to capitalize. The first, he made a poorly weighted through pass to Eto’o. Second, he controlled a honorific giveaway by Shalke and was wide open on break and opted against the obvious through ball and gave it away.
Feeling: Frustrated yet excited producing overwhelmingly anxiety.
Hopefully Rijkaard gives them an earful and we get see some joga bonita.
FORZA BARCA!

I should probably edit before posting, overwhelming* and get to see*
Great vision and touch from Bojan, complete opposite from fan favorite on the finish.
Get rid of Henry, please!

El capitan with great help after Abidal gets beat.

Terrible giveaway by Abidal causing Puyol to get booked and miss our first game against ManU. Why is he dribbling like a forward, get rid of the ball!!!

Puyol with a yellow card and he’ll miss the ManU match
AAAAAAAAAAAAARGh, it just gets worse.

Bojan again, the kid is unbelievable. I’m so excited for the next 15 years, getting to watch him perfect his trade!

We look great right now. Is it because they’re up 2-0 on the aggregate and Shalke is pushing more forward opening themselves up for the counterattack? Is it because of Rijkaard’s moving speech during break? Or is it because of Bojan?
Another great ball by Bojan and Eto’o duffs the finish.
Why is coming out? Frank must go!!!!!!!

I’m watching the ManU-Roma game (only have ESPN2) and I do not feel great about our chances against ManU. The semis will be painful (assuming we make it.. of course).

I definitely need to edit prior to posting.
Whoever is on the left side for Schalke is getting eaten alive. It doesn’t matter who Barca puts on the right, Bojan and Gio both have made him look real silly.

BTW, Setanta Sports coverage of this game has been top notch. Great halftime show, good picture/replay coverage and the announcers are incredible.
CLAP, CLAP, CLAP for YAYA!!!!! GREAT GAME!!!!

Henry tries to be too fancy. Gio with some impressive hustle and almost makes up for Henry’s poor decision. If he controls it for a second or two longer to make the defender commit this cup tie is history.

Nice control by TH14 but the cross goes begging.

Wow, cheers and not jeers for TH14?!? Maybe winning does cure all.

I hope we play better against Man U..Congrats guys!!!

TH14 was looking to poach a goal off the rebound, from the replays. Yeah, he looks kinda silly just holding the pole there.

Heh… the final four this year is exactly the same as last year’s.. only we’ve replaced AC Milan.

And somehow Barca advance. Both teams failed to capitalize on all the opportunities that were afforded to them. Not a good sign for Barca moving forward against ManU. ManU takes full advantage of their chances which will make the next tie very difficult. Hopefully the Messiah comes back and saves us!
FORZA BARCA!

Kevin, there has been so much talk it seems as if there must be some truth to it. What I’m curious about is why so much backbiting and why this year? Do you have any thoughts? I’m fairly ignorant of the fine points at Barca, but it seems like the big change has been the addition of Henry. It seems like the addition of one player on a team full of great ones would not be enough to lead to so much rancor, though.

Mike, I think that Henry was the tipping point. Suddenly, it’s Eto’o, Ronaldinho, Messi, Deco, and Henry, not to mention the stalwarts such as Xavi (who definitely has an ego) and Iniesta (ditto). But Henry, coming in the the “savior” tag, was what did it. When he didn’t produce, and Rijkaard kept on starting him, it was only a matter of time before the long knives came out.
I think that had everyone stayed healthy and learned to play together, it would have been a completely different season. I keep thinking back to that Gamper match. That side was one of the best teams that I have ever watched on a pitch, live or on television. Then it all fell apart, and people began looking for someone to blame, because “it couldn’t have been my fault.”
And so it all begins.
There’s definitely some poison in that locker room. The removal of Deco and Ronaldinho will lance the boil, I think, which is unfortunate because both are spectacular players.
Nice commentary, Kyle. I was at work, recording the match on my DVR, so I came late to the party. Check out Isaiah’s most excellent match review for the Yaya man-crush mania.
