News in Brief: Giuly to Roma, Ezquerro to Athletic, and the comedy of Galliani
By: Isaiah | July 17th, 2007Ludovic Giuly has signed with Roma, passed his medical, and is gone from Barcelona for €3m, plus up to €1.5m more due if Roma qualifies for next year’s Champions League. It isn’t a surprise that he’s on his way out, but going to Italy seems strange when he could have gone home to France. I suppose neither Monaco nor Olympique Lyonnais really wanted him for the price tag Barcelona put on him. While he’s always been sort of a pain in the ass, Giuly was a fun player to watch and an integral part of the side that won the Champions League, so it’s sad to see him go. Well, somewhat sad. I think this is the fifteenth time I’ve written this, but if Bojan and Gio Dos Santos live up to their hype, we won’t even notice Giuly’s absence. If we do indeed garner an extra €1.5m from this deal, then both sides will have achieved their goals (Barcelona’s was to get €5m for the player and Giuly’s was to get out of town). This brings Barcelona’s total spending for the summer down just a bit, to €62m. Woohoo for fiscal responsibility.
Santiago Ezquerro looks set to move to Athletic Bilbao. That’s a pretty good deal for everyone because Ezquerro wasn’t going anywhere in the Barcelona squad, especially not with a certain “TH14″ popping up. I don’t really have much to say about Santi (21 appearances, 3 goals), but I suppose he was a nice enough guy. I wish him nothing but the best of luck back in Bilbao, where he played between 1999 and 2005, before joining FCB. And best of luck to Giuly as well.
Now to the comedic news: According to Sport, Adriano Galliani has declared in Gazzetta dello Sport that this offseason Milan will sign one of the following superstars: Ronaldinho, Eto’o, Sheva, Drogba, or Alexandre Pato. Wait, what? Pato? How does someone so unproven even enter into the same conversation as those other megastars? I think I laughed out loud when I got to the end of that list and that Sport goes ahead and declares, “Galliani lives in a fairytale” as the opening of the article. Obviously Milan want to sign Pato, which I guess is the underlying point of such obnoxious grandstanding. Sigh…Internacional is not going to let Pato go without a fight, no doubt, if he’s worthy of being compared with Ronnie, Sammie, Shevie, and Drogbies. [The Sport article calls Pato an Argentine, which I just love.] I bet Milan can sign all 5 of those guys! And supposedly they want a piece of Fabio Quagliarella too, cause what the hell, right?

As a Milan fan I would like to apologize for Galliani’s antics. I find it funny that when Real Madrid did what he was doing he villified them, now its no worries. I would like Eto very much at the San Siro but I would like to hear what you have to say about Eto, Henry, Messi and company coexisting on a daily basis, is it possible in your opinion?

Gianfranco: No worries, Galliani’s no worse than any Spanish club president.
Actually, Isaiah, I’d like to hear what you think about the whole T-R-E-M issue as well.

Well, I’m glad to know there are those out there who are hanging on my every word…ahem…no ego here…
TREM sounds so distinguished…I think I’ll call it the MERT, instead.

Giuly,Gio, and Saviola…
My favorite stars leaves.
I see there are too many new stars and, I can’t imagine
how they will manage the FW line…Posted from

There is much to expound upon with the MERT situation, so I’m going to have to delay a post about that until next week, when there has been more movement on the transfer front (I’m talking about players leaving, not arriving). Obviously the presence or lack thereof of Motta, Edmilson, etc will be very important in considering who plays where and what tactical formations are necessary. If for some reason we do go after Drenthe and succeed in getting him away from Madrid (unlikely, but you never know), then that changes the complexion of the team quite a bit, in my opinion. So I’m going to hold off on the whole thought until I’ve had a chance to digest a couple of the latest developments.

Management, thanks for the beautiful buying of players for the next season. The buying was very fine, but there is a problem with goalkeeper. Victor Valdes is our major problem when it comes to winnig. So I suggest as a fan to the management to buy someone better than Victor Valdes. He can still with us as a second choice. So please see reason to respond to my comment or suggestion. Long live FC Barca, long live the manager.

I don’t know, Larmie J. Bartuah, about replacing Valdes. He’s not actually bad. Sometimes he has his moments that make you say “?” in an audible fashion, but is he worse than Edwin van der Sar? I personally don’t think so. With a solid defense in front of him, Valdes is more than capable. Hopefully another prospect comes along soon that we can get trained and make into a much better keeper, but buying someone a step above Valdes (Buffon, Casillas, etc) doesn’t strike me as the best option. Anyone of that caliber would be too expensive to be worth it as they wouldn’t put in much more effective games than Valdes, who had the second best goals allowed per game ratio in La Liga last year (second to Abbondanzieri, who, I believe, only got that distinction because he played in several fewer matches than Valdes).
The question is mainly in the defense, because no keeper on earth can square up to world class strikers one-on-one and come out with a save every time. If the defense allows opponents to freely meander the box with the ball at their feet, goals galore will be heaped upon that poor keeper, regardless of talent.

Valdes had a really good season in 06-07. I can only honestly think of one or two games where he made blunders, and how many ‘keepers can you say that about? Sure, he used to be a bit hit and miss, but his reflexes are excellent and I like the fact that he comes out of the box when he has to.
I’m more concerned about the lack of quality backup. Jorquera’s a nice guy, but he’s really average as a keeper.

Yeah, I like Valdes — although he let us down at a critical point last season. I for one am delighted that rumors of Dida moving to Barcelona has proved unfounded.
But MERT worries me. Perhaps we should call it DREMT (to include Deco) or DIMERT (Iniesta)? With that much attacking flair in the team, something’s gotta give. If one or two of them are injured, we’ll be glad for the abundance. But if they’re all fit and raring to play, I worry that the dessing room will be a very unpleasant place. And we saw the consequences of that last year …

Del Horno?!!! Why the hell do we need another attack-minded defender? If we have money to spare, surely it’s better spent on another central defender or midfield hardman?

How can people still think Valdes isn’t a great keeper? He had one shockingly bad game against Liverpool this season, but he’s saved us on many, many occasions and was one of our few players to perform almost every week this season. He has come a long way if you look at his growth over the past 3 seasons and is still young for a keeper. Yes there are better keepers out there but he’s a Barca product and I wouldn’t trade him Buffon if given the chance.

I would trade him for Bufffon — but nobody else.
