The Pipe is a grim thing
By: Kevin | April 17th, 2008
I wasn’t aware that crack was such a problem in Europe. I know that I’ve said this before but really….it’s just getting too big to ignore. The evidence?
1. Chelsea manager Avram Grant said in a press conference that he wants Kaka AND Messi next season. Now, he was smiling as he said it, because that’s what the evil drug does to you. Makes you all happy and crazy and stuff. He said:
“Willi it take a flair player like Kaka or Messi? I will not reject that one of those names will be here.”
What else is an embattled coach going to say, right? “I’m going to sign Jesus of Nazareth next. He’ll save money, because he’ll be able to make new boots out of sandals and stuff. And the food bills for the team? Forget it. The cost savings alone justify the undoubtedly expensive contract for him. But we’re ready, and will begin negotiations as soon as his agent returns our calls.”
Dude. Just say no.
2. Xavi says that the Barca “crisis” was just invented by those silly journalists to sell newspapers. “Never mind those goals going in against us, mid and lower table teams tying us, us throwing away points willy-nilly and acting like strangers on the Barca Bus-Touristic when we’re sitting on the bench. You can’t trust those damned journalists. They’re evil.”
Gotcha. Just. Say. No.
3. And it gets better. We don’t even know for sure yet if Ronaldinho is definitely going to AC Milan, but Clarence Seedorf, a.k.a. S10, just told the current R10 that the number is his. He had it at Inter, then came to AC and because Rui Costa had it, he couldn’t. “So suck it up, bucky.”
This has morphed into Ronaldinho’s arrival forcing Seedorf out the door, because said blessed event will force Seedorf into a more defensive role, one that he will refuse to play, again because rather than having a role in a side that could potentially win the Scudetto AND Champions League, he’d rather have his pride, and the pipe.
Just. Say. No.
4. In a startling bit of tactical information, heretofore unknown to modern man, Fernando Torres says that in order to win, we must stop Ronaldo and keep possession of the ball.
You don’t say. I’m sure that never occurred to anyone. It certainly didn’t occur to me. Holy crap! Stay tuned for other secrets.
5. In still other news, “Santi Claus” Ezquerro is unsure of his future at Barcelona. Rumor is he played in the last match though no evidence exists aside from some destroyed grass where he rolled around as if he was trying make a grass angel from a foul in which a player barely made contact.
“I’ll stay until I am told it is time to leave,” said the ne’er-do-well who uses Gabi Milito’s barber, to ill effect.
Do I have to say it? Okay. Just. Say. No.
6. Finally, buzz is that Ronaldinho wants to play one more time at Barcelona, to say farewell to all his devoted public. The probable date would be the season-ending May 11 match against Mallorca. My man Txiki received the proposal from R10’s brother and put it to the board, who are rumored to have responded in the affirmative.
“Hey, why not,” one member said. “He’s only been injured, out of shape, divisive and now wants to leave. His respect and gratitude for all that we have done for him is so apparent that this opportunity is a no-brainer.”
The complexity now is teaching him to understand how to stay on the sidelines, and respond to “Throw the damn ball in and quit fooling around so that the match can proceed,” in Catalan.
I’m out.

I hope Jesus doesn’t play in goal though - I hear he has holes in his hands.
Sorry.

Lee, I have noticed that your posts are being unceremoniously grabbed by the spam filter, for whatever reason. If you post and you noticed that your post isn’t showing up after a minute or two, please email me at barcelona [at] theoffside [dot] com and I’ll get it approved as soon as I see the email.
I apologize that I just now noticed this. I’m slipping as a moderator and I’m terribly apologetic about it. Kxevin has threatened to mail Oleguer to my house if I don’t stop sucking at life. Don’t do it!

That’s really funny, Rob.

i would be more concerned about jesus doing the whole water into wine thing while he was in goal. how could we ever tell what is in his water/wine bottle

Larm, totally true, though I wonder if he also has the power to turn water into Gatorade or something. Just because he’s able to turn water into wine doesn’t mean he’s not able to do other things.
Though as great as good ol’ JC would be for us, why don’t we consider Steel Leg and his merry band of brothers?

Rafael Van Der Vaart is now being touted as a potential Ronaldinho replacement. I had to nose around some, as I don’t follow Bundeliga much. Sounds pretty much the same. Lots of injuries, free kick specialist, great passer, there are some astounding goals of his on YouTube.
Prolly be a lot cheaper, too.
Marca is croaking nonsense that because Kaka loves our soon-to-be keeper, and Ronaldinho is a party boy, that the arrival of R10 will force Kaka to leave AC Milan. “And possibly come to the Evil Empire,” went the unspoken post-script. Unreal.
Is it Wednesday yet? I’m going crazy here.

Something else that just occurred to me. Is it just me, or are African defensive mids all the rage these days? We still have the best of the lot in Yaya, but it seems like suddenly, every side is looking for a tall, fast African player. Interesting.

Sport is now using their evil powers to some good, trumping up stories that Robinho is on his way out in Madrid (literally: they report he has been climbing out the back window to avoid the press). This is what I like to see from Sport: go after the Evil Empire’s stars with your muckraking, not Barca’s.
And another interview with Messi where he says he wants Ronnie to stay, his naivete about the Ronnie situation is a little heartbreaking. He doesn’t get that once the mob has turned on a player, that’s it. He’ll probably get that soon, and I have to wonder if he still wants to wear blaugrana for life after the way his friend has been treated. He has to think that the mob would do the same to him, next time they need a scapegoat for their frustrations.
Also, Xavi supports ‘dinho, making it just about every player but Puyol who have made unsolicited remarks supporting Ronnie.

Colin, I have to doubt that they were unsolicited remarks. The kinds of questions that people ask in press conferences are so ridiculous sometimes.
Ex. To Chris Douglas-Roberts right after the NCAA championship game: “Why do you think you missed those free throws?”
He should have said “Cause you’re a jackass.” but of course he said “I don’t know, I missed them,” slumped his head, and reminded us all that he’s 21 and heartbroken when he loses. Same is true for the Spanish press asking questions like “Durrr do you like Ronaldinho!?”

Yeah I agree that the sporting press is crazy. I know that Eto’o and Messi have made unsolicited remarks because the articles pointed out that they were being asked something like, “Do you like ice cream?” and they launched into their feelings about Ronnie. The other reason I said unsolicited is because most of the players have gone beyond the usual cliched answers athletes give to the usual cliched questions, Messi basically called out the fans on their lack of respect.

Support him all they want. He’s gone like last week’s garbage. And this is a man who has his R10 DVD highlights reel. And I think that their support is mostly cosmetic, except in the case of the exceptionally naive (ain’t it cute?) Messi.
The others would certainly like the high-profile, supastar lightning rod to deflect attention from their peccadilloes, but….
His time here is, and should be, over. It’s been two years now of him being a shadow of himself.

yeah, messi still has hope that ronnie will stay. i dont think the ac milan thing is a done deal.
i hated when rivaldo went to AC, so i dont want to believe it either. he was my favorite when i first started watching barca. and AC is the other evil empire, owned by that fascist Berlusconi, who is like Rupert Murdock times ten.

Word on the nice little paved streets of Lyon is that Txiki wasn’t in Lyon to talk about Benzema but Ben Arfa as a potential R10 replacement.
He doesn’t drink or go clubbing, so that’s an immediate improvement right there.

I’ll believe it when I see them dressed in blaugrana, Inara. Not that we don’t seem to be making a habit of bringing in French players.

I think that we have our strongest squad on paper this weekend. I want the performance of the season so far and Messi and Deco to come off the bench for the last 30mins and absolutely kill. Espanyol are the worst team in the league over the last 4 games. 0-9 aggregate over the last 4 matches with 4 losses.
More importantly I hope Man Utd have a gruelling match tommorrow against Blackburn who are notoriously tough opponents, plus the fact that Mark Hughes always tries very hard against Alex Ferguson’s men. If they drop two points then their minds may get cast forward to next Saturday when their title race will probably be decided away against Chelsea.
We can always hopePosted from

Ben Arfa? Hmmmm. Not as a replacement for Ronaldinho, but interesting nonetheless. Benzema is on record as wanting to stay in Lyon for a bit longer, and he’s sincere about it, rather than using it to drive up his price as players often do.
I think the Espanyol match is going to be really hard. They always are, because of the bad blood. Killing us last season made their season. We’d screwed up the title before that, but that match put the knife in. When teams see that UNICEF, it’s a target. So I tend to discount the past form of a side. People always play their little hearts out against us.
I’m betting that Deco and Messi won’t see a full match. Look for some Dos Santos action. Too bad we don’t have Edmilson, simply as a warm, breathing body to give Yaya some rest.
Is it Wednesday yet?
